Default MY New Israeli M 39 -2

My very first 9mm was a M39-2, I think that I traded it for a 1911A when I was 17, but I have not had one for a very long time. I never really warmed up to S&W semi autos, I have owned a few M59's, a 3913, but other then the 39 never really liked them. I always preferred the S&W revolvers. Well I had been thinking that it was about time to revisit the 39, the last one I had I think that I was back in about 1979.

At this stage of my life , I am not really into safe queens, I mean really, what do you do with them? Take it out of the safe once in a while, wipe it down, call it "my precious" and put it back? I had been looking on CDI sales site on Gunbroker for awhile for something interesting. They have had a lot of pistols that they have imported from Israel. I had bought a Beretta 84F from them a year and a half ago that was very nice. Right now they have 323 S&W semi autos up for auction on their site. Once and awhile they have a M39 or two.

A week and a half ago on a Saturday night I was on their site and saw a Nickel M39-2 at a starting price of $350. I looked the pictures over and decided that this one would do and put a bid on it. A few days later and one other person bidding on it, I won the auction at $365.

I picked it up today and I really like it! I think that I will letter it just to see where it went from the factory. It was made in 1979-1980 according to the Fourth Edition. The grips are Indian. Kind of cool having a M39-2 nickel that is a world traveler. I communicated with CDI and they confirmed that this came from security services in Israel. It needs a good cleaning, I think that it will make a great shooter!

That's a cool one. I like that it has some history to it.

Did you get 2 factory 8 rd metal base mags with it?

I had my 39-2 to the range today.

It's not my favorite shooter

It's not my most accurate

It's the one I shoot the best and have fun with.

Yes it came with a factory 8 round mag. I picked up a couple of new 9 round mags that seem to release a whole lot cleaner then the one that came with it. I will be taking it to the range this weekend for a good function check.

Probably originally shipped around Feb/March 1981. Interesting piece!

You did good! And +1 CDI! Back in December I was looking at their numerous 6906 listings. Went through each listing and sorted out which ones had the least "rub marks" and then targeted the prettiest one. Trouble was the auction end was days away and I wanted the gun "now". So I emailed them and asked if they could make the beginning auction price a buy it now price. They agreed. Picked up my 6906 from my FFL a few days later...great gun. $290 + shipping well spent!

Yep, CDI is just a great outfit to deal with on GB, the guns are described well and from what my experience is and from reading other people's reviews, the guns are usually better then described. They are on my favorite searches list and when I feel the need for something interesting I will look through their listings. I wish they had some S&W revolvers!

Numrich has the 8 round mag clones as well as the 9 rounders. I got one of these when I got my 39-2 a couple of years back:
Magazine, 9mm, 8 Round, Blued, New (GPC Mfg) Gun Parts | 192920 | Numrich Gun Parts
Functions great!

Very cool! The ones that been there done that are intriguing. I have a M-10 RHKP marked that had been lugged around Hong Kong for awhile and find that interesting. Enjoy that one!

Are there any unusual markings on it?

Nope, no markings other then CDI's import markings which they do very small on the barrel, you only see it which the slide pulled back. Very , very few of the S&W's that they have had have had an Israeli named engraved on them.

The 39 cleaned up real nice! I put a set of factory S&W grips on it and am looking forward to shooting it this weekend!

It goes real nice with my two other nickel S&W's, a 3" M13-3 and a 6" M586-1

I find mine to be very accurate. While not the best DA trigger it has a fantastic SA with the shortest reset I own. I agree with the fun factor.

Congrats to the OP on the great find.

Well, I took my ex Israeli M39-2 to the a private shoot at a tactical range and got on the shooting line with a group of operators with their plastic fantastic all ready to mow down some steel plates, pulled the slide back and loaded the M39 took aim and no boom, nada. Pulled the trigger again, nothing, took the round out, no strike, tried again, nothing, pulled trigger about five times, BOOM, one round down range. Ok time to regroup. I put the M39 away and resorted to a nickel 3" M13, all the operators just had to shoot that once they saw it.

Took the M39 home and started researching what could be the problem. I ordered a new firing pin and spring. That came in and I took the slide apart and that is when I noticed something missing, the manual safety plunger was not there, just the spring. So I started looking for one of those and that is when I realized that M39 parts are sort of hard to come by. I made a post about it here on the Forum and a member made a comment that he had parts for the M39 including the manual safety plunger. We pm'd and I ordered one from him. When I received it in the mail, I went back to the work bench and installed it. Now before the safety would work but now you can tell that it feels like it should, with out the plunger, it was a little easy to operate.

I took the M39 to the range this week and shoot 200 rounds through it, fast and slow, what a great gun to shoot! It would have a miss fire once in awhile, I need to take it all apart and clean and lube it now that I have it up and running.

My M39 at the range with my 2 new M10-5's.

What is CDI Sales policy on used guns? Is it "sold as is" or are you entitled to a price adjustment due to missing or defective parts? They are fortunate that you are capable of doing the work on this. If it would have required the services of a gunsmith, the repair could have gotten expensive. By the way, I have purchased from CDI before and never had any problems. I agree they are nice to deal with.

I don't know what CDI's return policy is. It is a used gun so I just assumed that you get what you get. You would have never known that the plunger was not there unless you took the firing pin out of the slide. It might be why the M39 was in decent shape, if it wasn't working right in Israel it probably got put up and not used. No big deal, it helped me learn more about the M39!

I bought a really nice CZ 75 from CDI, and they are great to deal with. Of all the importers, I think that they are the only ones who are discreet as pointed out above, and put their required marks on the barrel. What a great idea. I am very happy with my CZ, I had always wanted one since the Jeff Cooper write ups back in the 70s. Wonderful condition, and an extremely simple, convenient and rapid delivery.

You have a wonderful Model 39 there.

Best Regards, Les
