Default CS40 magazine ????

There is a CS40 for sale near me, but comes with only one mag. How hard are CS40 mags to come by and how much should I expect to pay? I am just wondering if I can get the CS40 at a good price, am I going to break the bank on magazines?

It is just supply and demand

These magazines have been getting harder to find as time passes. You need to be constantly looking in the gun show bins, on the websites and at the pawn shops. Some will show up

If you get lucky you can pick them up for $25-$30 unfortunately more often than not folks price the hard to find magazines that have been off the market for a decade or more in the $75+ area.

The CS40 is a nice pistol. Being built on the 45 frame and using 10MM magazines with a spacer in them to shorten to 40S&W, this pistol is a fine candidate for conversion to the 10MM Auto cartridge

Here are my two CS10s

Pretty rare these days. They come up on that large auction website from time to time. Typical price range is high $30's to mid-$50's with occasional bargains. Far better if you can find a used one locally or on this forum.

This is what you've got to look for when you own a CS40.

The trick is not to be like old TTSH and burn $40+ worth of gasoline in order to save $30.

There's nothing wrong with burning $40+ worth of gasoline in order to save $30 because in order to do that,he has to be going to gun shops and gun shows and those are good things in themselves.
I go from Cleveland Ohio area to North Carolina gun shows and Michigan gun shows.

A quick off topic drift, if I might. Do you go to any shows in the Charlotte/Concord areas? If so, how are they?

Thanks.

Ha!!!!! Very true... to a point!

Yesterday, I spent $13.00 in gasoline plus most of a very windy afternoon going through Southern New Hampshire gun shops seeking out pre-ban magazines plus 10-rounders for our friends in CA who are losing more of their rights yet again. I found exactly two such magazines, neither of which were cheap. I bought one of them, choosing to pass on the second one for now (probably a mistake but we'll see).

While I met some nice people... and one major *******... I could have bought the same magazine for probably $40 on-line and saved all that wear & tear on the car plus $13.00 in gasoline. Not a great day for moi.

You win some, you lose some.

Thanks. My son was just promoted at work and that involves moving to corporate HQ, which is in Charlotte. They'll be living across the line in SC, but hopefully we'll be able to go to a couple of gun shows when my wife and I go down to visit.

Damn good question. I was offered $400 cash for mine just the other day, which was weirdly reassuring since I don't consider it to be in terrific shape by any measure (i.e., not a good enough piece to justify expensive 10mm conversion work) and I don't have the original box. The problem is that we didn't get into a discussion of how many magazines would go with it because I really wasn't ready to sell. To be honest, I'm not even sure how many magazines I've got for it.

That certain large firearms auction website shows winning prices from the mid-$400's to the high $500's... some of them with as few as one magazine and no box. I would hope to be able to beat that locally.

Depending on condition, maybe start your negotiating a little lower. But if it is in really nice, clean shape, I'd say it's going to cost you a good, healthy $400 or maybe a little more... and that's even with the no box/no spare magazine issues. As much as people are giving the stink eye to .40's these days, the CS40 is in a very special class (i.e., convertible to 10mm).

++++++++++

Edit: For the record, I'd go $400 for another CS40 today if it were just a little bit nicer than mine. -ttsh

You might check with Midway. I have bought a number CS 45 magazines from them, last one was on sale.

^^^ that. I eventually want to acquire 2 CS40s',one to keep as is and one to convert to 10mm. Neither one would have to be pristine/safe queen, just 'shooter' grade.

Hi, Ralph!

I don't know where to get CS40 magazines.
Unfortunately, there are no other .40s&w magazines in the S&W line-up that will fit the CS40.

It is sometimes repeated that the 4013 single stack mag fill fit, but no, it is a different width and depth. (The 4013 single stack mag shares the same width and depth dimensions as the 10mm, but due to the bumps S&W stamps into the mag bodies, they will not interchange.)

So is everything doom and gloom for CS40 magazines?

Not quite.

You see, the CS40 shares the magazine dimensions of ALL of the S&W 45 mags.
That's right. The 45 mags fit the CS40.

Well even if they fit the magwell, how do they feed?

The answer is: They seem to feed just fine.

I loaded 7 rounds of .40s&w into my 6 round CS45 mag and seated it in the pistol.
I then hand cycled all 7 rounds through the action without a bobble.
Even though the spacing between the feed lips is noticeably wider on the CS45 mag than it is on the CS40 mag, I couldn't tell any difference in the feeding.

What's more, Midway has the CS45 mags on sale.

So regarding the CS40, as 18DAI says, "Buy it, Shoot it, Love it!"

I've had mine for 14 years and I still love it.

But please, don't convert it to 10mm!
IMO that is just abuse on these fine little pistols.
The aluminum frame was designed to be a compromise between weight and longevity.
It's a beating on the frame for a lot of flash and bang outside the muzzle without a great deal of added velocity.
There's a reason S&W never built an aluminum frame 10mm.

If you want more out of your CS40, get a CS45 slide, barrel, and magazine like I did and then you can make a bigger hole at the distance you'll be likely to use it.

BTW, I recently converted my CS40/45 to DAO with second strike capabilty.
With no safety levers, Delrin grips, and a thinned slide release lever, it makes for a trim package.

John

In my case, I found the CS45 mags lacking
when it came to loading them with .40S&W...

CS45 mags in a CS40

But to be honest, I didn't try the other 45xx series
mags that I have on hand...might be the subject
of my next range visit!!

Oh, and I did find two CS40 mags at the
very next gun show I went to after I got it.
Dunno if that was really lucky, or just par for me

Actually the single stack 4013/4041/4053/4054 magazines as well as the 1006/1026/1046/1066/1076/1086 magazines work just fine in the CS40/CS10 pistols if you just grind off the little nubs.

I have been using the full size 10MM Auto Magazines in my 1014 and CS10 for years now.

Obviously if using them for the 10MM Auto cartridge instead of 40S&W the spacers will have to be removed from the 4013/4041/4053/4054 magazines

So did you ever go for that CS40?

I was thinking about your CS40 today when I was at a shop that had three CS40 magazines in stock. First the guy told me $25 each. Then, when I was all done and ready to pay, he told me $30 each! When I pointed out to him his $25 price from just 2-1/2 minutes earlier, he got mad at me and said that he really didn't want to sell them at all.

So that was that. I put all the 3rd Gen magazines I was going to buy back in his used S&W magazine bin and walked out. So much for the suggestion that I hit more "cop shops" in my endless quest for 3rd Gen magazines. This one didn't work out so well.

[QUOTE=TTSH;139545607]So did you ever go for that CS40?

No, I did not. The CS40 was actually on Gunbroker at a shop fairly near me. I usually keep an eye on their listings and have picked up a few good deals that way, and being close I can forego shipping and transfer fees, but it went for $495, so I passed. I am just starting to notice the 3rd gens since picking up a nice 4506 earlier this year. I am a revolver guy and find, I think the term is TDA, more to my liking. I am on the scout for a 5906 or a 4006, but any 3rd generation catches my attention, if it presents itself.

It is a shame we have to run into characters, such as you did today. I wish you better luck next time and an honest man to deal with. I was fortunate to pick up a 4506 mag at a small show a few weeks ago for ten bucks, so you never know and that is half the fun.

$495 is kind of high unless it was really, really super-clean. I would have passed as well.

You win some, you lose some. I just wish the guy had told me on the phone when I called that he really didn't want to sell any of his 3rd Gen magazines. Would have saved me a 60+ mile round trip and a wasted afternoon. Strange dude for sure... but now I know.
