Performance Center 1006 Found
I thought that the 170096 shown in the SCSW was a myth, but it is true there is such a thing... sort of.
First off the SCSW lists the 170096 as "M-1006 9SH 3-1/2" GB DA SS Pcct"
The 1006 I found was a "Performance Center Classic Series". This is where the Performance Center takes left over parts, builds a pistol, and then billboards the slide with "Performance Center Classic Series". This has also been done with the 3953 and the 4567.
So here it is, 1 of 28 made per the auction site I found it on; definitely not a 3-1/2 barrel, but it does have the 170096 product code:

I saw that also, same place that you saw it. I can add that I have occasionally seen a 1006 with MIM parts before, and my only guess is what you said -- basically a gun put together with available parts.
With no intention to offend... I think it was a poor idea for S&W to call it a PC gun. (of course... where Smith & Wesson later took the "PC" moniker, awww jeez, I'll just slink away and cry this one out.)

I also saw it. It's an interesting piece, and I'd love to have it... Just not at the price it is listed at!

If it were all that a 5" Performance Center Limited pistol were... that price would be a decent OPENING PRICE that would develop from there.
Neat as it is, it does not appear to be typical of a 5" PC Limited pistol.

I completely agree. As is, I'd probably pay around a 10%-15% premium over a typical 1006 LNIB (much lower than what the opening bid is set to!).

I agree, it should have been bill-boarded "Smith & Wesson Classic Series" or "1006 Model of 1998".
The Performance Center guns of that era were truly works of art; a pistol built from left over parts should not have carried the PC name.
