Hang Onto Your 2nd Gens!!
All I can say is wow - today a 645AS went for $1495 on Gun Croaker today. Who would've thunked that those old-timers would be worth so much!! I remember dumping a 469 for around $200 (trade-in) many years ago - and I sold both of my 639's ... . Trump-effect or not - I'm thinking that a person should hold onto any metal handguns for another year or so - the prices are getting crazy!!

Just when I start appreciating 2nd and 3rd generations again, prices start climbing. After looking at the ended Auction there was only one bid, the minimum and was only $55 from the Buy Now price. I don't see a trend, but the gun was LNIB. Still that is Model 1006 type money.

Oh, I think they have been climbing... a lot! Maybe not down in Pennsylvania, but they are up around here bigtime.
Found an average so-so used Model 4013 the other day that needed a gunsmith like I need a big lottery win. Pricetag: $500.00
And it got worse from there.
Plastic? They are practically willing to give it away. Nice, all-metal 3rd Gens and similar? Be prepared to pay if you want to play.

I guess that makes the one I found for $900 and change a relative bargain in comparison... and it didn't even have the upgraded sights like mine has.
Maybe I didn't overpay so badly after all.

I'm sure a 645 with adjustable sights will pull more in than a 669, and some of the other more produced 2nd gens.

Of course. And there's a big difference between "used & abused" and pristine perfect NIB. In my magazine-hunting travels the other day, I also came upon a Model 469 that looked like it has been dragged behind the proverbial pick-up truck for at least 5 or 6 miles. I had all I could do not to laugh (or cry?) when the salesperson handed it to me. Price tag on it was a mere $275.
So cheaper 2nd Gens are certainly still available outside of PA... but the condition is sometimes a little lacking.

Yes we do need a time machine. I bought a 1 yo 454 BB convertible Corvette in 1973 for $3,000. Today a base vette is over 50G's. That same 72 vette is worth over 50G's as well, today.

A time machine would be sooooo cool. I've got so many things I'd like to change that it's hard to even know where to start!

I've got a shot at one that is outside of my comfort zone.....
It's a 639, round trigger guard, excellent condition. I think it can be had for around $300-400. (Maybe less)
How much difference for the fixed sight version?
I'm sure it isn't one of these, but just out of curiosity, what about the real early large extractor?

Yes and no, condition, mileage, rarity, matching numbers can make or break a price. As a person that has had many trips to Corvettes at Carlisle & gone to many auctions including BJ a lot of things (just like in guns) control the price.

Yes, true about condition as with anything collectible. This year will be my 33rd CAC, only missed two years in 35.

Ha should have held onto that baby ladder!! Just yesterday I brought my Chevy for an oil change and in the showroom was a new vette. Price was $71,000!! Pretty sure they were around $5,500 back in mid sixties. Hate to think how much a couple of mine would be worth today if kept up.

Yeah, 454 BB, 4 speed,A/C, PS, PB, vert, steel cities grey. No pics though. Rated at a puny 270 HP, but a friend who used to work at GM said it was more like 500 HP, engineers played with it for insurance/gov't scrutiny. It sure didn't feel like 270, nothing like the sound of a Rochester opening up

I'm guessing those quotes are directed at me?
I don't know what they go for here but certainly NOT $900 plus. That's ridiculous. You know what they say about a fool and his money

LOL!!!!! Oh, that nasty 469 would have needed a whole lot more TLC than just that! I know I have a reputation (undeserved IMHO) for overstating the "used & abused" condition of certain used guns, but on this one I may have actually understated its horrible state of repair.

Ha!!! No, not you alone Arik. At least one other of your esteemed PA brethren have made some comments lately that make us up here in moonbat Massachusetts very, very envious!

A lot of the crazy prices we see when we look back in time work out to be a little less crazy when we look at inflation.
For example; you said a Vett was about $5500.00 in the mid sixty's. Well, $5500.00 in 1965 is worth $41341.00 today!!!
So, when we see a Vett for over $70000.00 they have gone up higher than just the inflation.

Out today with the C6 and ran into a guy with a beautiful C7 Stingray, white with a blue interior and blue ragtop, chrome wheels, the whole 9 yards. Simply gorgeous.
Those convertible vettes are sure sweet. Calling lakesider!
The gent had to be in his early 70's, and it was his first vette. Turns out he was from Long Island and knew some folks that I knew in another life.. Small world indeed.

First of all, 72, & up was rated in net HP, while 71, & below was rated in gross HP, so you lost at least 70 HP right there. But by 72, compression had dropped, & there was plenty of pollution junk on the cars to kill the power. 1970 was the last best year. The 454 LS6 was 460 HP, while the 454 LS5 was 390 HP. These were rated in gross HP, & for insurance purposes, were rated low. Around here, 72-79 Vettes are $5000+, as long as they're small blocks, but not LT1's. GARY

All this talk of Corvette's makes me envious - you suppose I might be able to get a date, around here, if I bought me one of them? ... All kidding aside, it's nice to be able to afford one but I wouldn't be able to relax for a New York minute with a car like that sitting in the parking lot ...

Are we saying that 2nd Gens are the "vintage Vettes" of S&W semi autos?
I'll go along with that.

Wow sure enjoyed this thread! Good info concerning 2nd Gens and horsepower. Hated the switch from gross H.P. to net and from cubic inches to all this 5.0 and 6.2 Yep miss the old days when a big block was called 396 or 427. Gettin old I guess.
