Default New 41 - Blems / Dings - Need Help

After much anticipation, I picked up my new 41 today. Bought from Hinterland Outfitters and shipped to my FFL.

I was totally bummed when I checked it out and noticed some decent nicks / blems on the slide, frame and grips. The second mag was loose in the box and it must have been rubbing on the gun during shipping? Is that normal for smith and wesson? Seems insane to see to ship a beautiful gun with a loose metal mag in the box. Ugh...

So I get it home and notice that one of the mags is tight going in and when you hit the eject button it is stuck and you have to pull it out. What gives? Totally disappointed right now.

Hinterland is closed, but I sent them some pictures. Not sure if they will just tell me to take it up with S&W though.

So I need to know from you all, does S&W ship the second mag from the factory loose like this (loose in box, not in wrapper or bag etc..) or is that Hinterlands fault for poor packaging? Thank you!

It should have been shipped in a blue plastic clam shell case with a foam insert to cushion both the gun and the extra magazine.

Came in the blue case with foam, but the mag was loose inside.

If you aren't satisfied with it then see what the dealer or S&W will do about it. To much money for a used look on a new gun. Don't put off getting it taken care of.
Snooze you loose. Been there done that. It will be like a sore thumb that never goes away.

You paid enough for a Brand New Gun NOT some beatup scratched up beast I would send it back and say NO Thanks. I would want it replaced myself. As far as the tight fitting mag goes that is usually thick paint on the sides and to tight a tolerance in the slot when you shove it in position. I have been finding this for a few years now when I buy new ones myself and my 41 is 1958. You will see wear marks on the paint for sure.

This exact same thing happened to me on a brand new replacement 41 from S&W that I received under warranty. It came in a blue box and was made 3 months before I received it. The end of the barrel was dinged up in 2 places and a big scratch on the end. The bluing on the slide and barrel was all blemished on both sides of the gun like as if they forgot to decrease it before they blued it. I sent pics to the warranty centre in Canada and they forwarded them to S&W. They basically said that this was normal and that if I wanted it fixed it would cost me $285. My original brand new unfired 41 cost me $1699 and was machined wrong and it took me almost 3 years to get this replacement. I was just pi$$ed and ended up selling it for a $700 loss. Two bad brand new 41's in a row, I'll never buy another S&W again. The only reason why I'm here is I still own a 422, 22A-1 and a M&P 5" Pro Series. These ones I have never had a problem with, sold all my other ones and went with Glock and Colt.

On mine the dealer Sporteque in Drummondville, QC and the distributer North Sylva refused to take it back or replace it. They basically said that once you bought it, it's yours. I had the gun for 1 day and had to send it to the warranty depot in Brentwood Bay BC, in Canada for warranty. They sent the gun back to S&W which turned into a 33 month nightmare.

So, as most of you mentioned, I shouldn't have done the transfer. Lesson learned on my part. it has gone back to S&W for repairs and I am curious to see how it turns out. The bluing was gorgeous, can you blend in repairs on that? We'll see I guess. I am only an hour from S&W so if this turns into a 33 month nightmare, I'll be making routine visits

If it was me, I would have not taken it or see if I could return it for my money back. It's possible to blend it in but to be honest, it'll always be there because you know where the dings used to be. For such an expensive gun, it should have been perfect when you received it. But, for you it should be a couple of weeks and you should have it back. But being in Canada it's easier said than done because of ITAR.

Some of the comments here make me wonder if their guns weren't replaced with reject guns S&W had laying around. A new gun isn't beat up like an old gun. Sometime things smell a little fishy.

Initial delivery is your one chance to inspect and refuse it. If you take it home, it's your problem. Sounds like most of the guns discussed were likely mishandled by the distributor/dealer.

The Model 41 is actually a pretty solid value.

A custom 1911-22 will set you back $1650-$1800, if you can stand the 6-18 month wait times from a good pistolsmith. And the 41 is competitive with more rarified match pistols, while being less selective about its ammunition diet (yes, really--CCI SV @ $400/case is a lot easier to stomach than $600/case Euro-spec .22LR).

But frankly, the price is inflated because so many people that are...well, not in the target market for a $1000+ match .22LR.

That price inflation is making the 41 a non-competitive option. I saw a Feinwerkbau AW-93 with an Aimpoint R-1 already mounted (fitting an optic to an AW-93 is very expensive) for $2000--it was up on auction a few weeks ago. Now, it's hard to make a direct comparison (an ultralight Euro-gun that demands Euro ammo, vs the brick-muzzled 41)--but given that choice, I'd buy the FWB every time.

But then, I know why the FWB's worth lusting over. If you don't need what it's selling, the 41's a steal--very nearly as accurate, with a lower cost of living.

I just ordered a CZ checkmate, better believe I am spending alot of time checking it out before it leaves the counter and even before I fill out the paper work. I am bringing the x1.5 x7.5 magnifier and a pre-made inspection sheet.

- Bring a flashlight
- Look the gun over
- Bring a magnifying glass if its a high value gun
- Ask your local dealer to assist in looking it over (his interest to keep you returning)
- Go through the action and finish.

*Be advised that unless it is a complete custom or High End, you Are going to find blemishes, tool marks, you will find something...if its at an acceptable level, accept the gun, if not reject it.

When the Bass Pro first opened up here, their firearms prices were pretty good, but I noticed their guns from all mfr's had minor blems. When I questioned them about it, they admitted they bought blems, & passed the savings on to the customer.
That being said, this is why I ALWAYS say to buy the gun from he local guy, so if you don't like the way it looks, you can say "can you please get another one from the back room". It happens where I work, & it's no big deal to go to the stockroom to get another one.
This is one reason we will not accept transfers from another dealer. If you want a gun we do not carry [only possible if the mfr is out of stock] we will be glad to order it, & if you don't like it, we will return it. But we stopped doing incoming transfers for this exact reason. The problem is between you, & the person you sent the $ to. And you will not touch the gun until the transfer fee is paid. So we do not do that anymore. Buy from your LGS inventory, & do a thorough inspection before leaving the store. Once you walk out the door, it's between you, & the MFR. This is clearly stated on our bill of sale, in triplicate. GARY

I wish I could have inspected it first on my original 41. But nobody sells one around here and I had to order it unseen online. The warranty replacement, I didn't have much choice there either, it was sent to me also. Who knew that you would get 2 bad ones in a row. You would think that after getting a defective one and after 33 months of BS, S&W would send you one that was perfect or close to it.

41's in Canada are now in the $1800 range and that's not even including tax/shipping yet.

Well, I don't know how they do it in Canada, but here, you can refuse to take possession after it's been delivered to your local store, but before you leave with it on your license (if applicable).

It doesn't matter that you've "bought" it already.

I have bought other S^W pistols over the years and as a Canadiian we seem to get 3 rate repair service a lot of the time or have to pay for small parts like the plastic tags in the 22A, $1.50 each to us for even one spare when new. The same model S@W model 627 that can be bought on the US side for around $800.00 on sale will cost me over $1400.00 up here. Yes we do pay much more for our toys.
