Hi all, just thought I would share this. I was just going through my small gun collection and wanted to share a pic of my dads 39-2 that inherited after he passed away in 89'. He'd had two pistols that I now have, a Model 39-2 and a 22 Colt Woodsman. Both were still in the box with the paperwork and neither have been fired more than just a few rounds. I love both of these guns and will never sell them, they will go to my kids when i'm gone. Here is a couple pic's of both.

Your Pistols are beautiful as is the story behind them. I hope you take the pair out occasionally and keep them well oiled.

Excellent post. It won't hurt those guns to be shot and enjoyed if you choose to...especially since you don't have resale in mind. As long as you take care of them they will always look great and bring you much joy. The 39-2 is an earlier one as testified to by the "hole in the hammer". This holdover from the 39's was only present in the earliest of 39-2's. All of my 39-2's are solid hammers.

You mentioned your dad passed in '89 which begs the question of why so long to post?

Wow! That is very, very nice! One of my grail/bucket list guns in all its "as-new-in-factory-box" glory! Ya gotta love it!

Mine appears to be a year or so later than yours. Serial number on mine is A2128xx.

Now I'm down to just two grail/bucket list guns left before I can go on to my reward... to that big forever gun show in the sky! Just need to find the right BHP and a suitable K-22 and I'm good to go!

Thanks for all the "love"! Another gun (riffle) I got from my dad was a Winchester 22 Model 63 that is like new also. Yes I will shoot and enjoy them just as I ride my collectable motorcycles. I learned to keep things in excellent condition first from my mom, then the Navy, and last the Fire Dept.! I remember my dad buying the 39 when I was in high school or just out, about what year would this be with a serial # A155237?

My 39-2 is my "goin' to the city" carry.

The Bible (Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson) places your 39-2's serial number in the first half of the 1972-1973 range... so I'm going to say 1972.

Nice early 39-2 , there is an interesting evolutuion of its design begnning in 1955 as "The 9mm auto" (AKA Pre 39) since it was S&W's only 9mm handgun at the time.

When S&W went to model numbers it became the Model 39, the extractor was improved due to breakage in the old design right around the time your gun was made and introduced as the 39-2 , there was also a 14 shot version introduced around that time as well as the Model 59.

TTSH, Thanks for the info on the yr of the 39-2! E49guy, I retired in 04' after almost 29yrs. The city took me off the job due to a neck and lower back injury. Jimmyjones, yes my dad did have fine taste, thank you! The last time the 39 was shot was in 1985, a bunch of guys from the fire dept. rented a range and I invited my dad. He was standing next to me when he fired it it almost flew out of his hands! After that he told me to keep the 39 and he would shoot the 22, I said good choice! I still have the original box of ammo the he bought with the gun. I intend to exercise it on a regular basis and when doing that I will be thinking about him!

I lucked into one just a little older than yours in a similar condition. It's one of the prettiest firearms I own, and feels great in the hand. I should probably shoot it more than I do.
