I have two- a 3914LS and a 915...and of course, their grandparents, the 39-2 and 59.
It's hard to call the 3rd Gens "blued."

I only own three 3rd Gens from the dark side... and they are all value line ( or pre-value line) pistols: Models 908, 915 and 410.
Likewise, in 1st Gen, I have a Model 59 and a recently acquired Model 39-2.

My 3914NL and 457 aren't blue. Both are more black, but the finish on NL is much better. As someone who has a 457 mentioned to me, "The value line finish seems to have been applied with a Sharpie."
Depending on how attached I was a a Value Line gun, I might "ruin" one by having it Ceracoated.

I Ceracoated a frame on one of my 915s that had a bad case of "ring rash" ...a stainless/silver gray to get a nice reverse two tone look!

I would be very hesitant to Ceracoat a 3rd Gen like my 3914NL. Or even my pre rail 3913TSW which is getting a "patina" from frequent carry.
OTOH, any of non stainless Value Line guns would be prime candidates. At that, even something like a 457S wouldn't be a candidate to have the frame done.

I have a 4505 that I got a good deal on.
I also have an all black 5946. Still have no idea where it came from.

I was concerned that TTSH might have a case of the vapors when he read my post. Still, I persisted!

It could be the best Earl Scheib paint job in the world... and it would still make me physically ill just thinking about it. Paint belongs on houses and vehicles... not on Smith & Wessons.

That isn't a reverse two tone, that is a proper two tone. Dark over light.

Ironically, both the 3914 and the 915 have been touched up with a Sharpie more than once!

Let's see it! I'm thinking of cerakoting one half of my own and I'd love to see a finished product.

They look great! I have the same model and era it looks like with the square trigger. The finish is really flat, no reflective surfaces.I'm a bling type of guy though so I do wish it were a nice deep blue.
I like the look of the square trigger that yours and mine have but I wish I could find square trigger holsters for it a little easier.
Great find!

I had a lovely 457 that I thought was delicious in its all black colors (hard to call it blue). A friend of mine still has it.
Naturally, my 6906 is of the other persuasion, as is my CS-45. But only a scant two months ago I got deliberately serious about obtaining a CS-9, found three on line in the stainless coloration (I am sure there is a better name for it) but for 100 plus bucks less I obtained a blued one and am delighted. If I get the original stocks I might use them but that light blue contrast is kind of cool.
Then there is the 5903 SSV, but that is a horse of a different color entirely!!!!!

The contrast on that CS-9 is sweet. It makes stand out a little more. Great set of guns there!

First time I've ever heard that term used in connection with firearms.

I've successfully avoided the 3rd. Gen. Dark Side. I own two 2nd. Gen S&W pistols and the balance of my S&W pistols are 1st. Gen.! If the Model number has more than three digits, avoid it like the plague.

I have to admit, I was enticed to go to the Dark Side, the ultimate 3rd gen black pistol.

This was my first 3rd gen. Bought it off a guy on this forum, pretty much in mint condition. Makes a great carry gun and it's a great shooter. After enjoying this example for a while, I bought a 3913TSW pre-rail, in unfired condition. I never shot that gun as well as this 6904. Sold the 3913. This is one stays.

I'm in on the black. Looked a long time for a nice 5904.
I use it for 3-gun as the magazines also fit my Marlin Camp 9.

I've just got this 457D. All my others are on the lighter side.

Everyone knows I'm mainly a "bright finished" stainless guy when it comes to my beloved 3rd Gens, but that Model 4505 is truly magnificent. I could go for that in a heartbeat!

3914. Bought for $325.00 before I realized how rare they were.
457. My only .45 ACP.
3904. Beautiful, but I never shot it or carried it, so it went to another 3rd Gen collector.
CS9. Early one, single side safety. Very nice carry gun, but I replaced it with a pre rail 3913TSW, so off it went.

3rd Gen black guns
Bought a 3914 way back in the day; it was my first center-fire semiautomatic pistol. A great carry gun. Though I prefer a black or blue gun for carry, I also bought a stainless 3913 which has proven to be tack-driving accurate for me, and has been my carry gun for decades. Traded-in the 3914 for another black gun--an M&P 9mm.
