Default 3913 vs XDE

Everything old is new again. The Springfield XDE is a compact pistol with DA/SA, like the S&W 3913 used to be. Many people claim the 3913 is the best concealed carry pistol ever.

I like DA/SA in a concealed gun for safety reasons. I've had light striker-fired triggers go off when I wasn't ready to fire (pointed down range, just not quite ready to fire), and it's not that I don't trust or like striker fired triggers, I would just prefer a revolver or DA/SA trigger in a gun that's stuck in my waistband or pocket.

So does anybody have any insight into the 3913 vs. the XDE? Used 3913s that I've seen are probably more expensive than the MSRP of the XDE will be.

Default 3913 vs XDE

From what I have been reading, Springfield has come up with a new XD that is what the 3913 and the 5906 have in terms of hammer and DA/SA hammer cocked with safety on similar to a 1911 and carried in that mode. It has a de-cocker, which I like and the barrel is an inch shorter shy of the 4 inch barrel. It is slim and trigger reset and sights are great right out of the box. I have an XD-40 and I may be trading that in for the XDE in the 9MM. They are expanding their calibers in the near future in the XDE.

Interesting...................... still 25oz. but only 1" wide...... 3.3" barrel could be a bit longer IMHO. MSRP of $515 so should sell for $450???? in local gunshops.

After the nonsense in IL - I'm done with Springfield; now having said that I'd go with the 3913 anyways. Don't shoot the XD's all that well compared to other striker fired guns and I doubt this one would be any different.

I know nothing about the XD. However I did relamp and still carry my 3913.
That being said, I have a Shield. Just more comfortable with the 3913 on my belt or a revolver in a pocket.

Many lesser guns get compared to the 3913. None match it, let alone surpass it. From any manufacturer.

The ONLY GUN which matches the 3913s reliability, accuracy, durability, asthetics and ease of carry and concealment is the 3914. Regards 18DAI

I expect to carry a 3913/14 variant as long as I have one that functions.

Watching the video on the XDE the SA trigger pull looks like it has a longer reset with more than a fair amount of take up in it too . Sure as heck isn't as nice is my p320 reset or my old 669 SA pull and at a only an 1oz more weight in all metal ! Just don't see where the XDE fills any gaps other than for some current XD owners . .

The CS9 is closer to the Shield in size, but the 3913 gets all the love. Especially the Ladysmith, that's the one I'd get if I ever find one. The LGS had one a few months ago, I doubt they still do. They didn't want to sell it bad enough, at the time.

True Love ; for a "manly man" is the 3913/14 NL.....since 1991/92!!!!! Wow 25years!!

The Springfield...... if the price is right or a used one comes along cheap...... might make a great "Truck Gun"!!!!

Here are my three 3913 pistols. I reduced my collection from four to three a several years ago. The one I sold was bit dinged up with more internal wear. The 3913 TSW without rail is the jewel of the group. It handles and shoots great.

I like my 3914 quite a bit. Can't compare it with an XDE because I never shot one. Never felt the need to do away with the 3914....[IMG][/IMG]

Wow, who says that the 39xx in any series is the best carry pistol ever?

That would be the 40xx series once you shoot a Hi Power every other 9 pales in comparison. Sorry to rain on your 9 mm 3rd gen love fest but that gun just ain't it. If I made a list of the best 9mms doubt it would be in the top 5. Shoot a PC40 in wheel and semi auto config and then revisit this thread, LOL.

I could not fit it into my boot, would not work and I have owned a 3913. Too many other micro 9s out there that conceal better. Just few are the

.38/ 357 wheel gun SW
Micro XD 9
Ruger LC9
Kimber Solo II

just to name a few. Actually think I could conceal the Browning Hi Power better than I could the 3913.

Just yesterday, I found not one but TWO 3913's in a local pawn shop here in Montana! Too bad I don't have a wheelbarrel load of extra cash!!

PS. I already have 2......And I still believe that they are the undisputed KING of CONCEALED CARRY!!

I have a 6906 which is a great shooter. I've carried it in the past, but I'm more prone to carry a single stack now that I have some. I also have a 3953, which shoots well, but I have yet to carry.

I saw a listing tonight for a 3953TSW at a LGS I've done business with. I think it's over priced, so I probably won't even go up to look at it. OTOH, if it's a pre rail, I might have to go and look at it and see what their cash price is.

It never, ever, ends, does it?

No interest in it either really. The XD is too new. Let em work out the bugs, if any. Also no interest in hammer fired. Nothing against it, just no interest in one.
Same goes for the 39XX. Nothing there to get excited over. And if I did go for a single stack it would probably be there PPS

James,

This is a thread where everyone comes on and espouses their love for a particular pistol. Why rain on the parade?

You must have an interesting shape. With the Browning's barrel being 1 1/4" longer, an exposed, cocked hammer, and thicker and longer grip, please...enlighten us. How so?

I was not unimpressed: I predict a whole Sprinklefield line of XDE-type pistols... Full-sized & Compacts, adjustable grip swells, NO GRIP SAFETY!

Always thought the SIG 2022 was the true affordable "sleeper" (albeit a FULL-SIZED sleeper!) in the SIG catalogue: a poly frame and the SA/DA action up top.

Cheers!

P.S. Who around here really wouldn't consider a SA/DA Shield or a M&P 45acp optics-ready longslide with a hammer and a drop safety?

P.P.S. Absolutely LOVE my wife's 3913, hands down over my buddie's 9mm Shield. Also had to add that the claim that they "re-invented the hammer" is a bit pretentious, IMHO: I believe it was Og the Caveman that 1st re-invented the hammer when he figured out how to mount it on a handle and vastly improved the dynamics! Just ask that cave lion skin hanging on the wall of the cave...?

Last edited by STORMINORMAN; 05-04-2017 at 10:23 AM. Reason: To add a P.P.S.

The BHP was my first handgun I ever bought. It is my favorite. It is flatter than any 3rd gen 9mm I have seen, and with the commander round anti snag hammer it is not that bad. Plus it has a rest cock position which allows you to cock as you draw the weapon.

I went down this path of the 6906 double stack then a 3913tsw but none of them really fit my hand well and they would not conceal very easily. The SA/DA is nice to use in a conceal but my conceal weapons are all Sigs. A 357 Sig can do so much more than the typical 9mm even in +P. I have a stand 9mm Swiss Sig police gun as well. Smith and Wesson makes an excellent third generation pistol but they are weak sauce compared to the the 40xx series they make. I love my Shorty 40, and compared to the 39xx series it will make you never want to shoot anything else.

I honestly think the 9mm Smiths are just an offering for them to say they make a 9mm. The real advantages of the third generation handguns comes into play once you get into the 40 caliber or even one of their magnificent 10mm units. That is when you really can tell the difference, and what the heavy third generation pistols were made to do.

If S&W hadn't been trying to compete with Gloque, and instead competed with itself, they might have developed a polymer version of their boat-anchor (I say that lovingly) 3rd Gen series. They could have made a polymer 3913, but I can't imagine it would save any weight, only cost.

I posted something similar to this a few months ago and was roundly criticized by a couple of members. You made me feel better!

If you think about it though, a polymer framed 3913 would make sense for civilian, if not LE use. Although there are certainly a LOT more polymer framed LE guns made by S&W, Block, and others these days.

AMEN TO THAT FRIEND!! TO THIS DAY, I WONDER WHY THE SIGMA??? WHY??? THEY COULD HAVE JUST DONE WHAT YOU SUGGEST! AND KEEP THEIR BOAT ANCHORS IN PRODUCTION FOR THE REST OF US THAT LOVE THEM. SOME THINGS I WILL NEVER COME TO UNDERSTAND, OR COME TO TERMS WITH... AND NO, COST IS SECONDARY. BERETTA, CZ, SIG SAUER, ALL WENT MATTEL, BUT KEPT THEIR METAL GUNS TOO FOR THOSE THAT WANT THEM.

That is when you really can tell the difference, and what the heavy third generation pistols were made to do.
HMMM.... YES FRIEND, THE BHP IS A GREAT GUN, BUT WHO CAN ARGUE OTHERWISE FOR ANYTHING THAT CAME FROM MASTERMIND JMB REALLY. HOWEVER, SMITH & WESSON WAS NOT ALWAYS THIS LIBRELAL DOORMAT THAT HAS BECOME IN THE PAST DECADES. JUST A SMALL HISTORY REMINDER FOR THOSE THAT PERHAPS FORGOT AS THE TIME PASSES. FIRST AMERICAN MADE 9MM (M39), FIRST PISTOL TO REPLACE REVOLVERS/FIRST 9MM TO BE ADDOPTED BY POLICE STATE SIDE(M39), FIRST HI CAPACITY (UP TO 30 ROUNDS) DA/SA 9MM WORLDWIDE (1971 M59), FIRST OFFICIAL AMERICAN 9MM WITH THE SEALS (MK22), MOST 9MM MODELS VARIATION THAN ANY OTHER MANUFACTURER AT A POINT, AND MAYBE STILL SO TO THIS DAY. IN ALL FAIRNESS, I THINK, THE 9MM NOMENCLATURE SHOULD BE RENAIMED FROM LUGER & PARABELLUM TO SMITH & WESSON. LOL!!!

why the all caps shouting?

No certain makers are known for the particular round that they helped to develop.

Luger 9mm
Colt 45
S&W 40 caliber

even to a more recent extent the Sig .357 cambered in 357 Sig.

a necked down 9mm.

This is a basically how it breaks down with the best firearms in each caliber having a certain maker.

James, how could you leave the glorious .45 GAP off of your list??? It's perfection in a cartridge!

BTW, you eloquently skirted around my question above...

I'm just pulling your chain- I'm leaving in 15 to go run some rounds through my HP!

Beretta just lost their contract so we'll see how long the 92 remains.

CZ is made I a different country with different raw material prices and wages.

Sig is loosing to itself. Many departments are replacing their old P series with the 320 or something else. As orders fall off so may the guns.

ONCE AGAIN, THE CAPITALS ARE DUE TO KEYBOARD ISSUES, SWITCHING TO ENGLISH ONLY HAS CAPITALS.

I AM MISSING YOUR POINT FRIEND. ARE YOU SAYING THAT EACH COMPANY SHOULD BE KNOWN FOR THE CALIBERS THEY INVENTED?

PERHAPS YOU HAVE A POINT FRIEND, MAYBE ITS THE END OF SEASON FOR METALIC HANDGUNS. I GUESS TIME WILL TELL. HERE IN EUROPE HOWEVER, METALICS STILL ARE SOUGHT AFTER. AND AS FAR AS I KNOW, IT IS MORE ECONOMICAL TO PRODUCE SOMETHING IN THE US, THAN EUROPE AND THEN SHIP IT TO THE US. PERHAPS THE REASONS WHY BERETTA AND SIG SAUER MOVED PRODUCTION THERE. NOT SURE WHAT THE COSTS ARE IN CHECH REPUBLIC FOR THE CZ MANUFACTURE. TIME WILL TELL.

It's not all money. Countries like Germany and Switzerland have laws about what they can and can't export. Which is why you have a Sig USA and not to many real Swiss Sig rifles

PERHAPS YOU ARE RIGHT FRIEND. I REALLY DO NOT KNOW THE EXPORT LAWS OF GERMANY SWITZERLAND OR ITALY, AND I CAN NOT HAVE A CERTAIN WAY OF FINDING THEM OUT. I HAD READ IN THE PAST, BERETTA HAD MADE ITS PISTOL FACILITY IN MERYLAND, BECAUSE THAT WAS A DEMAND IN THE MILITARY CONTRACT. TO BUILT THE PISTOLS ON US GROUND. SO, THIS IS ONE IS IN PAR WITH WHAT YOU SAY. OTOH,I READ THAT THE F92 WAS CHOSEN OVER THE P226, BECAUSE IT WAS A DOLLAR LESS PER PIECE. THEREFORE, I THINK, EVEN THOUGH AS YOU SAY OTHER FACTORS ARE IN PLAY, COST MIGHT STILL BE THE MOST CRUCIAL.

It wasn't a dollar less it was simply that Beretta outbid Sig on parts. The chosen company had to provide not only the gun but also spare parts

Lots of really nice guns in this thread, love my CS9 and would like to find a 3913.
I do have the new XDe and itís been 100% through about 700 rounds. Top heavy feeing at first but the more your shoot it the better it gets. Extremely accurate for me also. Remind me of a single stack P2000, but the DA is better and the SA/reset a little further out.

It suites me very well.

Is it much larger/heavier than the cs9?

My vote goes to the 3913. I'm sure it shoots like my cool weather CCW 3908.

Default Plastic Striker Fired or All Metal Hammer Fired ...

I will always go with an all metal weapon and consider the third generation of Smith & Wesson semi-autos the pinnacle of this class of weapon.

My 3913NL is a fine example of this, action job by "T" (Teddy Jacobson) and slide refinishing and tune-up including recrowned barrel by our own BMCM (the Master Chief):

For concealed carry my 3914 DAO gets the nod, Big Dot Tritium night sights, slim and smooth. DAO makes it like my primary carry revolvers:

If I was given an XDE it would be gone soon.
