Default Why no love for the S&W 1911 here?

I have an E series and love it. Great gun, superb fit and finish, fits me well. But I notice not a lot of threads on these guns. Any reason why?

As an aside, am interested in swapping out the front sight for a FO, but can't seem to find many - believe S&W uses a proprietary dovetail cut?

If John Browning had intended the 1911 to have an external extractor, he would have put one one it.

What about 3 dot sights, beaver tail, ambi safety, extended safety, trigger guard undercut, oh and he definitely didn't intend for the grip safety. That was to appease the military.

The S&W external extractor works great and is trouble free as well as being simpler to swap instead of tuning

I often looked at one but ended up buying a Springfield TRP only because it happened to be cheaper and at that moment

I have a couple S&W E Series 1911's and am very pleased with them. As far as the extractor, if it is internal or external, I couldn't care less as the external works perfect. If someone is a 1911 purest, and requires the internal extractor, than so be it. To each his/her own.

We love them.....we just don't talk as much about the 1911 series. Why? Probably because most people here can't afford them....me included. The only reason I have one is because my family gave me one as a retirement gift. Sorry, but I could't stand the OEM grips.

I agree with your assessment about the quality though....particularly the PC variants. High quality internals too.

Looked at a couple. only reason i haven't bought one is want a 1911 in a 10mm not a .45. Like those a lot in particular the scandium frame PC guns!
Now if they would just build a 10mm version---.

NICE looked hard at a couple of those. Price point is not bad as they are right at the same PP of a Kimber.

Just my $0.02 but why would you want a S&W 1911 when you can have a S&W 645?

I like 1911's and have or have had many brands, including several Colts, a few Kimber's and even an Auto Ordnance (which for the price was not bad), and beyond a doubt, my S&W is the most accurate out of the box 1911 I've ever owned. Period. Who says there's no love for them? Yes, they are a bit pricey, but compared feature to feature with other name brands, they hold their own in that department, and are a bargain when compared to some.

As a slight diversion, I've also owned non-1911 45's such as the HK USP and Sig P220, and prefer the 1911's. One of my primary carry pieces is a 1911 design 9mm.

Interesting question. S&W 1911 threads seem to come in waves then subside for a while. I have " a few" including PD, Pro , E and original "billboard" series. I have no complaints (and much admiration) with all of them.

You are right in your observation with replacing the front sight. S&W used several different cuts across their product line. Finding the right one can be a bit of an Easter egg hunt. Best option I have found is to give the folks at Dawson Precision a call. They will hook you up with the properly fit sight for your particular gun. Cost is decent and quality VG too. As I recall, they will even install for a small fee.

I am not a 1911 guy, but just saw one at my local store for $600 used. Worth jumping on? Not an E Series or PC.

JMHO, but I think the reason why there aren't more threads about the SW1911 guns -- of which there are several variations, each with its own appeal -- is that the Third Generation pistols cover such a wide range of combinations of caliber, size and action, and do it so well. Compared to them, the SW1911s came later to the party, and while they are a worthy design and excellent quality at an attractive price compared to other makers' offerings, there is more to compete with out there. The Third Generation guns are really a world unto themselves in that regard, and on a Forum like this one, the volume of talk about them compared to the SW1911s reflects a much greater number of owners. Again, JMHO, and no slight intended toward the SW1911 guns (which I, even as a confirmed Third Gen guy, have been tempted to begin dabbling in... ).

BTW, IRT a previous post: from what I've read, John Browning himself was the one who first improved his original 1910 design of the 1911 by later incorporating an external extractor.

LOL!!! Well, maybe not the dark corners of the Internet but if I were a big 1911 aficionado, I would probably hang out over on the 1911 Forum.

Since practically every gun manufacturer in the world makes a 1911 these days, if I were a big 1911 guy, I don't see why I would hang out here. Why limit myself to just one brand when there are literally hundreds of them out there?

I already own two older (1970's) Colt 1911s, one being a Gold Cup, and just recently I purchased a Rock Island 1911A2 after acquiring several old Para "pre-ban" A2 magazines. I probably don't need another 1911... but if I thought I did, my guess is that I'd go with a Sig 1911 over an S&W. I had the opportunity to shoot a Sig 1911 and the performance and feel of the gun were very impressive. I have never shot an S&W 1911 so I will admit that I may not know what I am missing. People that I respect like and recommend the S&W 1911s but it still sounds funny to old, half-senile, curmudgeonly me... the term "S&W 1911." I can barely find them mentioned in the latest edition of the Bible.

Besides, I still blame S&W's abandonment of their own all-metal centerfire semi-auto pistols in part on their decision to compete in the already over-crowded (but apparently lucrative?) 1911 world.

I read that too, somewhere.

However, I do love the S&W E series 1911 "engraved" model, that I picked up last year. It was just sitting there on display, and I couldn't resist it.

Because a lot of these guys here are wheelie guns only and just don't understand or get the finesse and art form that makes a 1911 dependable, understandably so, it's a REVOLVER forum. Go to the Colt forum and its completely different, they like the wheelies too, but the guys over there understand and get the detail, perfection and complications that go into making a nice 1911. Most wheelie guys that only like wheelies tend to be snobs and believe they're superior because they have an outdated gun that has a butter smooth action and is pretty to look at. I love my "E" series commander and it's probably my favorite over all the rest of my 1911s, I have revolvers too, but they're not the land's end, I'd carry nothing else than a 1911.

I AGREE WITH YOU FRIEND. THOUGH I LIKE THE E SERIES COMMANDER SIZE 1911, WITH THE ROUNDED BUTT, I STILL WOULD CONSIDER OTHER 3RD "GEMS" A PRIORITY FOR ME, BEFORE I WOULD GET A 1911, S&W OR OTHER.

Most historical fans of the 1911 would rather own the Colt version of it.

Don't know why that is really since they all sell for the same amount of money in decent condition. To me you can not tell the difference in any of them until you get into the Nighthawk and Wilson line. That is where the true abilities of the 1911 come shining through. Honestly if you are buying a standard 1911 then SW Colt Rock Island and heck Ruger even make equivalent 1911s that are good basic shooters.

The E series is relatively new to the 1911 game and a lot of options are out there for 1911s. I think several on here have had trouble with the early models. Smith and Wesson are known mainly for their 3rd gen and wheel pistols, they make a 1911 but so do a lot of people. To many better options out there when you get into the upper 1911 lines that standard makers like Smith just can not match. They give a good alternative but can never be a high end 1911 boutique maker like those that excel in the 1911 markets.

- Your going to sit here and talk about revolver snobs...Pffft 1911 guys are the worst in all categories. "My Wilson combat can shoot XXX, my Kimber can shoot XXX, your Glock is nothing but trash compared to my 1911 XXX. The mere mention of criticizing a 1911 sends you into rage mode. even if its not even your manufacturer, kinda like a democrat and liberal, they defend each other even if the one defended is wrong.

Maybe its just me, but I just can't seem to warm up to 1911s made by companies that became famous for other guns. Its sorta like they thought that since the 1911 is so popular, we might as well make one and get a piece of the action. They have no love for the gun, they just want the money.
I know the S&W guns are good, but I just never could develop much interest in them. I feel the same way about the Ruger and Sig 1911s as well.

After owning both, it's a toss up as to which one in my opinion is better. Both are fantastic pistols. There is certainly "love" for the SW1911 here.

then your typed text doesn't match your intended message tone.
Lot of negative text towards the forum guys not knowing quality or art, revolver guys being snobs, which can easily be remedied by leaving it

Dude your the one that's not getting it, I specifically said THE GUYS THAT ONLY THINK WHEELIES ARE SUPERIOR ARE SNOBS, NOT EVERYBODY HERE, you say in your post that all 1911 guys are the worst, then go on to say how yours will outshoot any Glock (no idea where that came from). Doesn't that put you in the category of a 1911 owner? You then accuse me of criticizing 1911's when all I did was praise them. Maybe it's time to clean the glasses or something?

I have 4 1911's. I really like the looks, quality & function of my Smith! I don't care about the exactor, but prefer not to have 1 with a rail. Bob

I have new stocks coming for my S&W 1911. Thailand Buffalo Bone Specials. Will post pics of gun wearing them. Bob

Bingo! We have a winner. There it is right there... the real underlying reason why I'll probably never own an S&W 1911. If I ever want to buy another 1911, I'll likely buy a 1911 from a company that originated or at least specializes in 1911s... not some company just jumping into the mix for a little extra profit. S&W fanboy that I am, I still don't worship and adore S&W so much that I would buy anything they build just because they built it.

Default Much to choose from

There are a great many model 1911s out there to choose from, in all price and quality ranges. The ones in the low four-figure range tend to have a certain amount of snob-appeal but these guns are not directly competing against the S&W Model 1911.

My S&W Model 1911 has run perfectly since I bought it. It's beautifully finished and is more accurate than I can shoot. Besides, I'm not a competition shooter so minute of torso is all I really need.

Enjoy your Model 1911 and don't fret too much about what others think of it.

I believe S&W knocked one out of the ballpark with their PCSC and "E" Series, they are simply some of the sexiest 1911's on the market today not to mention a great functioning edc gun.

Obviously S&W loves their 1911's, look at the craftsmanship, it's top notch.

Now some here, in this section of the forum, get all butt hurt cause their favorite guns are no longer being made so they lash out in frustration. It's so transparent.

I own a half dozen Colts and see nothing negative about the 1911 made by S&W or SA or Ruger or RIA.
I draw the line at Sig's and Tauri

Truth be told, none right now. Doesn't mean they're not fine guns, only I don't have your money.

I've had two, an earlier SC Commander gun they no longer make. Should have kept that one.

I had another one down below, but my brother shot it and took it home to Kentucky .....legally of course

SW1911SC E-Series™ Round Butt Scandium Frame | Smith & Wesson

I'd buy a PC gun in a heartbeat if they made em' without the slide cuts....oh,.they do, so maybe after the Jovino

Right now a Jovino is in my sights, so any 1911 will have to wait.

Have a couple of the basic E series stainless 5" models. Both currently are wearing Kimber .22 uppers. Need to make one a .45 again. I have several 1911's including Kimber, STI, etc. The S&Ws are very good accurate pistols. Cost about $850 each as I recall. More than a Ruger or basic Springfield, probably a bit less than a comparable Kimber. Don't keep up with prices like I once did. My STI's are perhaps a bit nicer, but we're somewhat more costly. I'm pretty much into 9mm 1911's these days, and unless you go to the Pro series Smith doesn't make one. I'd like to see them make a Commander size stainless 9mm. If I buy one anytime soon, it will likely be a Ruger. Pity. I don't think the Rugers are quite as well made or as accurate as the Smiths, though that varies somewhat with particular guns as much as brands.

I had a 645 when they first came out.Trust me not in the same ball park with a 1911 of any make.Very big and sits way too high in the hand compare to a 1911.Second generation saw an improvement from the factory addressing the issue of a high hold.

My very first semi-auto purchase after being one of those wheelie gun guys mentioned by someone up above....I still love shooting this guy as well.

I really, really try not to be an old fuddy duddy about stuff. I have a smartphone, I'm on Facebook, and I like modern movies.

But, I definitely prefer classic looking 1911s. Blue, wood, serrations that go straight up and down and are located only in the back, extractor on the inside, fixed sights, short triggers, and arched mainspring housings.

If I found a Smith 1911 at a good price I'm sure I'd give it a go, though. They seem like outstanding guns.

I believe that they are well liked by a lot of folks, but 1911's in general are not exciting or rare yet. Every manufacturer is making several models of them. I will get an E series someday if I live long enough. Some will tell you that a real 1911 is made by Colt of steel and wood and chambered in 45 ACP. I think the E Series have been well enough received, but there is a lot of competition.

I sold it off years ago (in MA) after I got my first (S&W) 1911. It was a nice enough gun but I never loved the grips or sight options. That first year production S&W 1911 is still with me btw. Sorry for the pic quality. It's an old one!

I'm a retired auto dealership parts and service director who won numerous awards for his customer service. Now that I'm on the other side of the counter, I'm a little fussy about how I'm treated.

My 1911 ownership experience started with two stainless steel Taurus PT1911s that I bought for our son and myself. They seemed like a lot of pistol for the money but we quickly learned that you do get what you pay for. Many areas of them are not true to the 1911 pattern - for example, no company makes an adjustable rear sight for them and our son's gun shoots very low and left so it needs one. Also, no company makes a 22LR conversion kit that will function on a PT1911. Both guns required trigger work as the triggers were gritty and heavy.

I sold my Taurus (son kept his for a "truck gun") and bought three Kimber 1911s but sold each one after four negative experiences with their service department that concluded without the condition being corrected and the documentation of the "repairs" being ultra-vague. Being happy with my S&W revolvers and two experiences with their service department, I bought the 5" PC gun like amorer951's.

I also changed the grips (real nicely figured wood looks best to this olde phart's eyes) and polished the black coating from the barrel hood as it was being scuffed by the slide.

I subsequently bought a 4.25" E-Series two-tone 1911Sc and another PC gun, the Doug Koenig replica .38 Super.

All three guns function perfectly and I couldn't be happier with them. As far as the external extractor goes, I much prefer it to the internal style. I had to "tune" (read: bend) my Kimbers' internal extractors every now and then to keep the ejected cases going into my catch net. The S&W's were "housebroken" as they came out of their boxes and have stayed that way but I understand that tweaking the extractor spring is all that is needed if they ever change their ways.

I know the S&W guns are good, but I just never could develop much interest in them. I feel the same way about the Ruger and Sig 1911s as well.
Don't kid yourself, all companies make it for the money

So while I don't understand the 1911 thing past the two Colts and the one "A2" that I own, who is to say that S&W didn't hit one out of the ballpark with their decision to go 1911 along with all the others?

My memory is (just ) good enough to remember the intro of the S&W 1911. At the time, it was a somewhat fresh approach to 1911 marketing. ( At least in MA where 1911 options were very limited.) Prior to this, most folks I knew bought a basic ( Colt, RIA, etc)1911 or frame and went to their local gunsmith to poured cash into it to get the reliability and usability upgrades deemed necessary for most buyers. ( Beavertail safety, ambi safety, opened ejection port, checkering, adjustable trigger, Upgrades sights and springs, upgraded mags...) Then there was S&W offering a 1911 that had it all done at a fraction of the cost of going custom. ( Paid $650 for mine as I recall) It was certainly enough to push me over the edge!

p.s. It must have worked because now, everybody coming back into the 1911 game ( RIA, Ruger, Remington, Sig, to name a few) offers a tricked out version at competitive prices.

I'm not gonna take sides in the S&W 1911 argument, but I'll mention something I think is important to consider.
For years, beginning in the 1960s, Smith and Wessonmade, what many considered to be, amongst the very best match grade 1911 barrels. These were offered exclusively to military pistol team gunsmiths, such as the Army Marksmanship Unit at Ft. Benning. They were strictly gunsmith-fit only barrels, having oversized lugs, barrel hood, etc. They were made mostly in 45 ACP and 38 Special, though the latter may well have been used for the 38 AMU cartridge as well.
This has all been well documented. See the following for lots more info:
9781931464185: US Military Match and Marksmanship Automatic Pistols - AbeBooks - Bill Jenkins: 1931464189

Something to consider before passing judgement on S&W and their ability to build a good 1911...
