Model 4566 DeCocker
I was fortunate enough to pick up a model 4566 this weekend and after a thorough cleaning and inspection I noticed the safety lever only acted as a decocker and not a safety. I own several other 3rd gen S&W's and the safety levers all act as a decocker and safety. Is this something just on the 4566 or maybe this was a law enforcement model.

Do you mean the safety/decocker is spring loaded and returns to the ready to fire position?

They can be ordered/set up either way IIRC. We had them after the 1076s and our 4566s were set up that way. Although the 1076s were deeply flawed and broke a lot, the Sig style decocker on that model was pretty handy for me as I am left handed. The 4566s were accurate, but broke a lot too, and we did not keep them very long. As soon as I could take delivery of my approved alternative, I turned in the 4566.

Spring loaded decocker only was an option on 3rd gen models.
Some agencies felt the double action trigger was enough of a "carry safety" (like revolver) and would keep the operators from presenting a weapon (under stress) with the safety on.
I have several pistols set up like this.
If you don't like it, it can be easily converted back to safety and decocker.

Congrats on your decock only 4566! While not rare, they are scarce.
Does yours have a spurless hammer? Ours were LE Special order with decock only, spurless hammer and Novak night sights.
Ours gave great service and never broke anything. Neither did the decock only 4566TSWs of our sister agency.
I purchased mine and still use it. Great 45! Enjoy yours! Regards 18DAI

Thanks for the vote of confidence, it has the conventional spurred hammer.

You made a great pick up. My de-cock only bobbed hammer 4566 has never failed me. It has digested any kind of ammo it has ever been fed and in my estimation is match grade accurate. It far, far, exceeds what I'm capable of from an accuracy standpoint.
I've said this before and I'll say it again, of all my DA/SA .45's, the 4566 would be the last one to go. Even over my German production Sig P220. That right there says it all about my opinion of the 4566.

Important distinction between the 1076 and 4566 de-cocker mechanisms. They are totally different, on the 1076 the de-cocker is on the frame using different mechanics and was subject to a recall.
The 4566 de-cocker is on the slide and is VERY robust, once in a blue moon does one hear about an issue, and when you do it's usually the result of a weakened plunger spring.
Enjoy the 4566, just like it's longer barrel brother, the 4506, it's built like a tank.
