I was shopping for handguns and on my birthday in April, my in-laws who are retired sheriff’s from Maryland gave me two guns that have never been fired. They were going to buy a 50ft hatteras and bought both as boat guns. S&W 5903 S&W 5 shot 38 Special.
They bought another house which was a better investment.

And did I mention they have never been fired?

In 2007 they gave me one of their service revolvers which is a Ruger Speed Six.

1. Should I clean the 5903 before I fire it due to it having all factory lubrication?
2. Do I clean the 38 before firing it?

Or do I not fire them at all and buy a current newer model?

I clean all "new to me" guns before I fire them. Especially the ones that have never been fired before.

I replace the recoil spring on all "new to me" guns before I fire them as well. A week ago I bought a never fired, ANIB 3953TSW. When I stripped it down and compared the recoil spring to a new one, it was measurably shorter. I replaced the original one because it's cheap insurance and S&W doesn't have replacement frames.

Both of those guns appear to be in great shape. You'll find the 5903 very pleasant to shoot and extremely accurate.

Give them a good cleaning and fire away! Don't save them for someone else to shoot!

Very nice and enjoy.

That's a pretty nice gift! I vote for cleaning, lubing and shooting them as well.

Just as a point of comparison for value, a fairly worn "C grade" gun is going for $399 from a dealer with pretty good prices.
