Talk me into it
Found a used 5946, looks to be in good shape, for $350. I've been intrigued by the 3rd gens, and don't really need another 9mm, but dang it this is calling to me. Is it worth getting, versus a new similarly priced 9mm of any other brand? Of course anything else in this range would be polymer, for starts... so already have that in the Pros column.

The DAO trigger is an acquired taste. Have you dry fired it yet? Other than being a boat anchor, which I like, you can't beat a better duty pistol. The stainless will gobble up recoil and they aren't making anymore soooo. Are there a lot of handling marks? It would need to be near mint for my $350.

Talk me into it
I have not handled it yet. It is way across town and have not had a chance to go fondle it.

If I "don't really need" then I don't buy. I know you said talk me into it but.....
I owned a 5946. Good gun. But because I didn't really need another gun in the safe I sold it based on other criteria

For $350 you could possibly luck into a decent 6906. A 6906 in nice shape is a 3rd Gen 9mm really worth having.
I have a strange take on the 3rd Gens, I'm good with an all Stainless boat anchor in the form of a 4506 or 4566 .45. An all stainless boat anchor in 9mm just does not appeal to me in any way, especially with a DAO trigger. I would suggest handling the 5946 and going from there to see if it really is what you have in mind.

By all means buy that pistol. Especially if you don't already have one or a similar 3rd Generation Smith and Wesson. There is nothing new similarly price that will come close to the quality and performance of the 5900 series. Only con is the gun is heavy but that removes a lot of the felt recoil.

Yeah I hear yeah, I think I would lean more towards the 40 or 45's in any of the 3rd Gens. But I would entertain the 9 mm if it seemed solid and in great shape

Go buy it. You can always get 350 bones for it if you don't like it. They are nice guns, and they ain't making them anymore.

The DAO trigger is different if a person hasn't done much with them on other autos or of course revolvers. I have a 3954 and a 6946...love 'em both and they have great DAO triggers which I shoot well. I also have a 4053 which we know is a .40 on a bigger frame in single stack with DAO...it feels a bit heavier and longer which requires more practice. I haven't handled a 59 series DAO but I would assume it's very much like my compact 9's.
If you're used to TDA or striker fired and relish a 4-5 lb trigger with a short reset then move along. On the other hand if you also enjoy revolvers and like to experience and be familiar with other platforms then jump right in! With the cost of admission only $350 you can't lose.
Shooting revolvers in DA or DAO autos makes you better with everything else.

Oh I love my revolvers, so I'm used to DA shooting.
I may pass on it, because, like I said, don't really want another 9mm now. And also because I just found another gun I'd rather have now... I stopped by Gander Mountain on my way home and they've got something I've been wanting....but it's not S&W.
If you must know, it's a mint condition Ruger P94 in .40.
