Default Source for 4003/4006 magazines?

I'd like to buy a spare magazine for my 4003TSW. ProMag Industries has a 4003/4006 10rd nickle plated steel mag, but everything I hear indicates this company's mags are atrocious when it comes to reliability. Anyone have firsthand experience with them? I've tried looking elsewhere but since S&W discontinued them, ProMag seems to be the only source, but maybe I'm out of the loop..
Thanks for any input.

Joes Pawn has them all day long on the big auction site, however they are listed as 10 rounds, when in actuality they are 11 rounds. Since you are in CA that may be an issue.

I've got a couple brand new Pro-Mags (10-rounders) that came with one of my full-size 40's, but I've never bothered to try them. I've got enough 11-round OEM pre-bans to sink a ship so no point in sooting up brand new third party magazines that I'll probably sell or trade away someday.

S&W OEM 4000-series 10-rounders are getting awfully hard to find because of California. Sad to say but that large auction website is probably your best bet for finding genuine S&W OEM 10-rounders.

Altered 11-rounders may still be a possibility in California but I don't think anyone knows that for certain yet.

California is problem for mags and firearms period. It used to be ok to own/acquire "hi-cap" mags as long as they've been altered to hold ten rounds <. Now that option is in jeopardy.

Checked Joe's Pawn Shop, all he had were 11 rounders. But thanks for the heads up.

You may want to delete that link, since while you can point out that they are available on Ebay, a direct link to a live auction will get some unwanted attention from the management.

that link shows mags that,I believe, are incorrectly described. The pic show the 10rd side but not the other side which would've marked 11rd. claims they're 'pinned' at ten rounds,I see no 'pinning' anywhere unless it's something internal.
I offered(via PM) the OP true S&W OEM 40S&W 10rd mags. I've been shipping a lot to California lately of the 59series,69series,& 40series 10 rounders that I acquire here at Ohio gun shows. He doesn't want used ones,he wants NEW ones, good luck with that.

He might be waiting awhile before he sources NEW mags. I'm in CA, and the 10 rounders were and are plenty available, USED of course.

Per spistols and the OP, it's clear they understand that. It's a common trick on that large auction website... i.e., claim 10 rounds for every magazine over 10 rounds. Not good if you really need a 10-rounder to comply with the law in your moonbat state.

A brand-new-unused-in-package OEM magazine is going to be awfully tough to find. I'm sure some are out there somewhere. Just got to get really lucky.

Well, it certainly wouldn't hurt, but luck is the key in this case. I've scoured MA, Southern NH and almost all of RI and come up pretty darn empty. Haven't tried CT yet but I think you need a pistol permit issued in CT to buy any magazine down there these days.

New OEM 3rd gen mags,I guess that would be like going today to a General Motors,Ford,Chrysler dealer and demanding NEW OEM parts for your 1990s' vehicle. That's what junkyards/boneyards are for to get used still serviceable parts just like gun shows are for acquiring used still serviceable magazines.

That analogy doesn't hold up very well. I might not be able to get new parts for a Dodge Intrepid, but I'd be able to get most service parts aftermarket at my nearby auto parts store. I could even get repro body parts for many cars.

There are aftermaket magazines for S&W guns, but overall they aren't that good. There are aftermarket spring kits for 3rd Gens, which seem okay. Try finding an aftermarket guide rod for a 4516.

Of course, GM, Ford, Chrysler also never offered a "lifetime" warranty.

I thanked you for your offer, but thanks again, the sarcasm is very helpful...
I've found the most unlikely NOS gun parts...patience and a little luck is the key.

If so he is risking prosecution if they are shipped to a California resident - exporting mags with 10 + capacity is a violation of state law by both the seller and buyer. Good luck with that.

Totally agree it is an extremely slippery slope if any of these "10" round, actually "11" round mags sold via that large e auction site were shipped to CA, NY, or MA, or any other 10 round mandatory state. Auction/ad says 370 sold. I would bet that a good amount of those went to the above states for the sole reason as them being advertised as "10" round mags. Wonder if that auction site cares or not?

The auction website is covered by the fact that the seller lied about what they were selling. The seller doesn't care because they aren't located in an anti-2A moonbat state. I don't think that one moonbat state's anti-2A laws can be used to charge a seller in a different non-moonbat state (although there is no doubt that certain legal pressures could be applied to stop doing it - we've seen that done). In the end, it's really only the buyer in the moonbat state that could get in trouble buying a magazine that is illegal for non-LEOs to possess where he or she lives.

It's an open secret on that auction website that hi-cap magazines are routinely sold as 10-rounders to satisfy the website's official "no hi-caps" policy. The key is the photo. Buyers need to know what their desired magazine looks like.

Per the auction site's policy, you are not allowed to sell magazines holding more than 10 rounds. If you list an 11 round magazine, then the auction gets flagged, pulled, and you get a warning. The seller is openly deceiving the auction site as well as any potential buyer, especially when the buyer in a 10 round state can be heavily fined and penalized.

Just found a unused NOS new in original package 4013TSW magazine. Now for a 4003.

Quote:
Per the auction site's policy, you are not allowed to sell magazines holding more than 10 rounds.
Also from Ebay:
"High capacity magazines modified to accept 10 rounds or less are also prohibited unless permanently modified by the manufacturer."

So essentially, any 10+ mags modified/limited to 10rds are prohibited, unless the seller can prove they came that way from the mfgr. I don't know of any mags that came pre-modified, but I guess it's possible.

Quote:

Since the auction website is only a facilitator and not the actual seller, they aren't legally responsible for sellers that offer items for sale that may be illegal in certain states. However an aggressive AG in that state could argue otherwise, e.g. conspiracy by the seller and auction website to violate the law.

Quote:

It can be done through creative measures, but usually a warning letter from the states AG is sufficient enough to to make them stop selling to the anti gun state in question. Pressure from a SF city attorney forced out of state sellers of magazine repair kits to stop selling to CA residents since those "kits" were actually disassembled standard capacity magazines.

Since California recently added new mag law language that prohibits the buying, buyers of 10+ mags are now easier to prosecute. (The old language only prohibited the selling, giving, lending, of 10+ mags.)

I understand the desire for a new magazine but given that they are elusive, I would buy an available used magazine and change out the spring (which is still available) making it like-new in function.

Thanks for the link. I didn't think any 3rd gen OEM springs and followers were still available.

I didn't dig all through the site but this might be a source. I know they have 11 rounders

I happened across this thread last week. I am in California and I have been trying to find spare 10-round magazines for my Model 411. I don't go to gun shows out here, and so am limited to online offers and the highly unlikely (for me at least) chance of finding used mags at an LGS.

I haven't had a whole lot of luck, and the number of 11-round mags being listed and sold as "10 rounds" on that auction site is frustrating as hell. The number of sellers that, in all sorts of creative ways, attempt to obscure a clear view of the side of 11-round mags that would show the visible evidence of the mag having been truly pinned to 10 rounds is astounding. I am pretty sure that a number of California buyers must have been duped into buying 11-round mags advertised as 10-rounds.

When I came across this post:

Quote:
Originally Posted by oldman10mm View Post

I offered(via PM) the OP true S&W OEM 40S&W 10rd mags. I've been shipping a lot to California lately of the 59series,69series,& 40series 10 rounders that I acquire here at Ohio gun shows. He doesn't want used ones,he wants NEW ones, good luck with that.
. . . and I decided to PM oldman10mm. He had two remaining .40SW 10-round mags for the 40 series, and indicated to me that they could pass as new.

We struck a deal; he declined my offer to pay up front (rightly or wrongly, I trust members of forums like this a lot more than unknown sellers on the auction site) and he insisted I inspect the magazines first and then pay him once satisfied. The magazines arrived today.

Forget "pass as new" -- these magazines by all appearances ARE new. Yes, they were not in OEM packaging, but dang, they're as "new" and in as good a shape as magazines I have pulled from an OEM package. They're in better shape than magazines I have run a single mag load through.

So thank you, oldman10mm, for doing a fine service for us folks in California. I would not hesitate to buy from you again or to recommend you to others looking for high quality used mags.

Member oldman10mm truly is the undisputed King of Smith & Wesson pistol magazines. Several times now, I have nominated him to write the first chapter ever on S&W magazines for the next edition of the SCSW (a.k.a. "The Bible"). This thread and others demonstrate his prowess and knowledge in the subject matter.

He has offered to help me as well with my own 3rd Gen magazine issues, mostly relating to "pre-ban" hi-cap magazines (required in my moonbat state if you want to remain legal). Now, the biggest need has changed to S&W OEM 10-round magazines (i.e., "crippled magazines") because... Commiefornia.

Sadly, the new prohibition for even "pre-ban" hi-cap magazines in CA has sent a chill down the spines of folks like moi who also live in crazy anti-2A moonbat states. We have spent a ton of money on pre-bans only to have the fear arise that CA's latest madness may eventually spread east. Now you can't find an original S&W OEM 10-round crippled magazine (for other than for SDVE's) for sale anywhere in New England at any price. What do we do if/when Commiefornia's latest nonsense spreads to the east coast?

In short, you were very fortunate to link up with oldman10mm. He is Da Man! That's not to say that there aren't other members here with outstanding generosity and trust. There are! I have been helped out many times by members here. It's a great forum!
