Default Model 52-2 Barrel

does anyone have a source for a new barrel?

i somehow bulged the barrel using bad wadcutters. i wonder if anyone has tried turning the outside of the barrel to remove the ridge. there looks to be plenty of metal to do this. Any thoughts?

I don't at the moment have a source but I am in the market for one of these guns. Would you mind sharing what happened with the load that embedded in the barrel?
What kind of WC or was there a powder under charge or overcharge that destroyed a hollow base skirt in the barrel for the next round to catch?
I feel bad for you

OH! brother all of us 52 Fans feel for you. I dont have a spare barrel .
If I did it would be yours. After crying, I would try to clear the tube and shoot it. Try anything to get the old girl back up and shooting.
Try here on the Forum to find a barrel. Some pretty amazing guys here with a stash of parts. Best

Attempting to "fix" or save a wrecked 52 barrel sounds like a royally bad idea to me when you consider the fine pistol and what further damage might happen.

Items of this kind (just a barrel) are scarce but YES, they do sometimes appear for sale, sometime in forum classifieds or on Gunbroker but also at a place like Numrich.

Numrich takes in broken guns daily, some are simply bags of parts. You can check Numrich on one day and see no help, but check it a week later and one may appear. This is a habit you should begin and consider this project a long-term one.

-HOW- does this happen? I believe that most often it happens when some careless handloader puts far too heavy a charge behind a swaged hollow-base wadcutter. Indeed, it can drive the center core right out of the bullet leaving a full-caliber lead ring in the barrel, a perfectly awful obstruction for the next shot.

Of course, it could also be a previous squib load and a full slug stuck in the bore with a full-spec round behind it.

There have long been rumors and chatter of an aftermarket barrel maker doing a run of 52 barrels, but I have never seen anything beyond hopes or rumors.

Good luck.

Check with Clark Custom Guns, they were going to make barrels. That was a couple of years ago before the death of the owner. Other than eBay, Gunbroker etc, you have your work cut out for you.

Hold on a sec, is the bulge near the muzzle end of the barrel? If so, that's normal and shouldn't be touched as it interacts with the barrel bushing.

I had it happen to me... Pistol cycled fine, ejected etc. Next shot pistol jammed open. Bulged barrel.. I was lucky in that I found a very fine Gentleman here on the forum with a spare barrel. Clark Customs could possible "roll" the bulge back out, I called them and they said that most of the time it will work. About two years ago now, but might be worth a call the Clark's. They were rumored to be making new barrels for the S&W 52 series, but have not seen any yet.

Clark barrel is now available. Shoots well with the faster twist and improves the function of the gun as well.

I have rolled the bulge out of a 1911 barrel successfully. You could still see a ring in the bore but it shot and functioned correctly.
I made the rolling tool by replacing the cutter wheel on a pipe cutter with a hard steel roller, giving you three rollers. Takes a lot of torque on the t-handle but it works.
A new barrel would be better.

Give the good folks at Clarks or KC customs a call. I know Clark makes a model 52 barrel now as well as barrel bushings and I think they can fit them. Good luck

Clark & KKM are both making replacement barrels / bushings . Both have to be fitted . IIRC both have a faster twist than the stock 1 in 18.75" , which is desired for 148 HBWC accuracy especially @ 50 yds .
