Default RC9 Recon Rescue Shoot or Restore?

Earlier this week a co-worker called to tell me he saw a nice S&W 3913 at a local LE gun shop. He said they had received a lot of police property room guns and things were selling quick he thought he 3913 was $225. Yesterday I finally got by there the 3913 was gone and one of the remaining used gun was this.

Oops, I have more to say!
I wouldn't restore it... I would shoot the wheels off it and maybe carry it also. You don't see a lot of PC Shorty pistols with real carry wear, I think it looks great like that and some officer had REALLY great taste -- but then again, WHY would he ever leave it behind?!

$275 +tax, Hell yea I bought it. NICS went down yesterday so I had to go back today to pick up. It's filthy on the inside. The guns were confiscated crime guns.

It is sweet, decocker only, no safety, with second strike. Yea, my new carry gun.

Oh that SUCKS because it means some original owner of that pistol will never get it back. As I'm guessing some criminal who lost it as a seizure probably didn't get it directly from the Performance Center.

The gun was filthy. Lots of dried varnish, lint, crud. Not a lot of wear on the inside. That Briley bushing to barrel fit is tight. I had to put a little oil on the barrel to get it in the slide.

I've carried a used Shorty 9 I got from a friend in about 1995..... those old PC guns were hand "built" by the last of the old S&W gunsmiths......

At the time ...... we had no idea how small the runs were on some of these guns........ I've got a PC SD-9 I shot for years in local club version of IDPA........ 10 years later learned here, only 179 were ever built.

Decocker only NICE!!!

Question Question

TNZ71, Congrats, that is one great deal you got, wish I could find one.

Not meaning to hi-jack the thread or go off on a tangent, well maybe a little, but a while back I had a .45 Recon that was also set up as decocker only; while a nice feature that many like, I personally prefer safety/decocker, just to keep the same manual of arms as my CS9 and 3913TSW. I would be interested in hearing from some of our 3rd gen modification guys if anyone knows if the decocker only feature can be modded, without a big hassle, to the traditional safety/decocker function.

Somewhere down the road, I might consider getting it refinished by the mothership, but certainly not right away. I'd have some serious fun with it first.

Okay wise guy!!! Give a poor old man a break! I will admit that it has character somewhat beyond the average "used & abused" 3rd Gen. And yes, it does appeal to me... my OCPD notwithstanding.

Don't know ...... but I really like the decocker only feature on my PC IDPA 5906........... Serial # DPA00xx

To the OP Why do you call that a Recon 9 ? According to the SCS&W the recon hand wraparound Hogue grips I've never seen one but the "Recon 45" I did see had a "Recon" billboard and a exposed ported barrel. Is that an NRAxxx serial #?

No note in SCS&W 4th on Serial #s on the Recon 9

Couldn't find a "NRCxxxx" reference for 1999-2000 SCS&W dates for the Recon.

NCR matches and the Recon was a special run for RSR and they tend to have 'special" serial # runs..................

Missing billboard has me puzzled....... I had a PC CQB .45 with the billboard........couldn't figure how to get rid of the Billboard lettering w/o disturbing the 'bluing" on the slide..

See your other photo no lettering on the right side either.........Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Under NCR00xx <25 not likely to be an overrun.........

I think I'd strip the slide stop to bare steel............

FWIW.......I stippled my grips (checkered areas) in a fish scale pattern for a better grip surface.

Ditto ! I completely agree with TNZ71 and Bam-Bam. While this may sound a bit off to some, I have found that I enjoy much more when I purchase a well used version of a one of the more collectible types of pistols then when I have bought new. The new or almost new go into storage from which I personally derive limited enjoyment, as I am a shooter not a collector, and when I take that new or almost new pistol out and it gets its first scuff, scratch, nick, etc, not a good feeling. However, the well used one is great, goes right to the range, if I choose to lay it down on the bench without a soft mat, just no worries, can not tell the new imperfections from the old, and with 3rd gen S&W, at least in my experience, the more they are used the better the trigger action seems to get.

CDI gets more for plain vanilla 6906's than what you paid.....I don't see any blemishes on that gun....I see a lot of character but no blems....good call on making it your ccw...and I like those forward slide serrations too

Don't know how I missed this thread before, but I'm glad you revived it. Great score on an outstanding PC pistol that I too would have voted that you "shoot the wheels off" of! That's not wear on that pistol -- that's just getting broken in good!

I missed this thread too. Beautiful as it is! I wish I could find one like it for a song so I'd have one to carry. I'm not as into LNIB examples as I used to be just 'cause you can't do too much with them...well you can but then why buy LNIB? I have this one but can't bring myself to carry it or even shoot it much...still love it though. I've thought about letting it go but will probably let the grandsons tear it up after I'm gone...we'll see.

Excellent find and happy shooting.

I'm not a big fan of pistols that are scratched and worn from neglect...wear from using it as it was designed???...well that pistol looks great...I'd keep it as is.
