Default 4006 CHP and 4013 sighting

At Summit gun broker

The CHP 4006s have the integral rail. Very cool.

The condition and price of the CHP 4006 at Summit overwhelmed my resistance, and I bought one. Since I am selling my collection, I need something to shoot.

FWIW, I recently learned that the CHP has decided to replace their new 4006TSW's (which started entering inventory back about '06/'07), so there may be more TSW duty pistols hitting the used market at some point. If they do the same thing they did when they replaced their original 4006's, their officers may be offered the opportunity to buy their pistols, and the rest may be sold off to a vendor.

I'm unaware of the agency having formally announced the new contract to replace their 4006TSW's (or the gun company who won the bid/testing to announce it yet ), but it's probably not telling tales out of school to mention that it's a plastic pistol (still .40).

Also FWIW, it was maybe a little over a couple years ago that the CHP did some testing of some small plastic pistols on the market, and then decided to start replacing the 4013TSW's issued to their officers working plainclothes assignments, with a plastic compact.

CHP surveys previously showed (back in '06) that many officers were firing an average of 800-1200 rounds per year (not counting academy firearms training, as I recall), and the agency was buying 5 million rounds of ammunition per year.

That's interesting data and figures, appreciate you sharing. Have to admit that I am not a big .40cal guy but as I have matured, I definitely despise it a lot less. I guess I wanna say that it is kinda good to hear that at least some large organizations aren't totally abandoning the round. My buddy (local to me, middle of Ohio) is a Sheriff's Deputy and his issue is a .40cal. (sorry guys, it's tupperware)

I'm an enthusiast shooter who also carries daily, but I have NEVER got all wrapped around the axle with ballistics and "stopping power" and all that drama. I'm of the "center of mass with reliable ammo until the threat has ended." So gel tests and pretty mushroomed bullets don't dance in my dreams when I sleep, it simply doesn't interest me and the amped up arguments that take place on caliber/load interest me even less.

But there is one thing I know for sure...
I carry a 9mm and I am confident in it and with it. But on the range day when we are dropping plates and transitioning as quickly as we can (trying to NEVER miss,) I am certain that my 165 and 180 grain .40 S&W loads man-handle steel plates with noticeable more authority than my 9mm guns do.

.40cal is well out of it's "heyday" but this is a completely viable round for duty/service/defense use.

You had me going.

I have been looking for a 4013 at a bargain price. Shame that gun is a 4013TSW instead of a 4013

I bought one of each. I have these guys in my favorites, and check them once a week or so. He buys collections, so you never know what he's going to have. If you look under used guns, he has a couple of other smiths for sale. Really nice guys to do business with.

I bought one of each, I figure I can use the 4013 as a CCW gun.

I bought one of each also, why did I read this thread? I guess that I owe Smith10 a beer. However, I added to my police owned collection and the prices were reasonable for this area of PA. I mentioned the forum and Mark said that he had a few calls, more 4006s in the pipeline, no so for 4013s. Hope they are lightly used, and "minty."

I owe three beers; a new thread and pictures to follow when they arrive.

Some items of interest:
- 2006-2007 CHP contract was for 9,736 4006TSW's, but many factors could reduce the overall quantity available to the public.
- The 4006TSW (CHP) is only one of four 3rd gens with an integral rail.
- The CHP transition is estimated to take 2.5 years, so expect these to trickle in for some time, but I wouldn't anticipate the price to fall below what they are currently being offered at.

4013 magazines are very scarce these days. However the 4013TSW magazines are much easier to find since this is the same magazine that the Shorty40 uses.

Smith and Wesson offers a spacer to go on your 4006 magazines that makes them very nice in the shorter frames. One is pictured below with my Shorty357

The spacer is also available aftermarket from a couple of sources.

What's the difference between 4013 and 4013TSW mags?

ETA: Are the 4013TSW's decock only?

The 4013/4014/4053/4054 and the 4031TSW are totally different firearms.

The 4013/4014/4053/4054 are all single stack auto-loaders built on the 45 frame. They use 10MM magazines that have a spacer in them to shorten them to 40S&W length. They make great candidates for a 10MM Auto conversion

The 4013TSW is a double stack auto-loader based on the 40S&W frame. It takes the Shorty40 magazines or the 4006 magazines with or without the spacer installed. This firearm is not convertible to 10MM Auto

Thanks for the heads up. These pistols were fairly expensive when originally purchased. Someone post pictures when you receive them.

Man-O-Man! And here I am left out in the cold for lack of money and the fact that those three "post-ban" 11-rounders would have to be a throw away. The 4006TSW is on our approved list but those post-ban 11-rounders violate our MA AWB.

I also promised the good wife that I wouldn't buy any more .40's due to the resale value being so low these days and how hard they are to get rid of generally. She will curse me after I'm dead just getting rid of the ones I already own.

I take a little solace in the fact that the condition of some may be questionable and I've not done well so far with random uninspected buys. The odds of one meeting or exceeding the "TTSH Standard" cannot be known.

I think most of us who are married are in the same boat. If someone wanted to start a business, and be totally honest with the spouses that are surviving, that would be a good business. Get your name known, maybe through the NRA, and when a wife loses her husband, you go in and give her the value of the guns, give her a fair price, and everyone wins. How many of us worry about what is going to happen to our guns when we die? How many of us have bought a S&W and sort of stretched how much we paid? I know I have. Just food for thought.

Thanks. I was aware of the Single-stack 4013, but thinking there was a non-TSW 4013 for some reason.

I just had a nice conversation with Mark regarding the TSW's. He says these are among the cleanest police trades he has ever seen. Excellent condition down to the followers in the magazines. Something else that I don't have any real NEED for but now have a tremendous WANT for...

So will post up when mine comes in.

What harm??? What harm???

My gun budget for the rest of this year is so limited that my 3 originally planned acquisitions are already down to 2 and very possibly headed to 1 the way things are going. Plus, you want me to break my solemn oath to my good wife and buy another .40???

I don't see it happening. Cash is way too tight right now.

Mark said there will be many many more shipments coming in so no rush if your cash strapped right now. Supposed to be another shipment in the next couple weeks.

A couple weeks won't help me right now but maybe there will be some floating around next year. And I'd pay extra just to see the one I would be getting. My luck with "random picks" has not been good.

The 4006TSW (CHP).

Mark said that there would be no more 4013s.

So will post up when mine comes in.
This is not an exaggeration, my 4006 TSW is very nice, not perfect, not in the box, but very nice. The integral rail is similar to my Sig X5 and so is the weight. This is the gun that S&W should still make if they wanted to compete in the upper end of the metal frame semi auto market.

The 4013 TSW is not as nice, wear in all the usual aluminum frame areas though not abused. Still it fills a hole in my collection of 40s, maybe it's just a bunch of S&Ws.

No photos, I am technologically incompetent.

I have the older CHP 4006 it was a nice clean one the guy who had it must of been a gun guy the D/A pull is very smooth . I was watching the new 4006 Tac from years back when they got them , I would try and get CHP guys to chime in . I now have one on the way. I think it will be here Fri.I saw very few come up for sale once a retired CHP had his for sale but wanted to much .

Delayed per usual, but I did get a chance to check them out. I don't typically purchase police trade-ins, so I cannot really compare the condition to others. They came in a priority mail box wrapped in dense white foam, no individual boxes. They had a little more wear than I was anticipating, but I guess they are on par with a 10 year old service weapon. The most intriguing wear mark was a groove in the top part of the bulge at the end of the barrel. All three of them had it in some form and I'm not exactly sure what would cause it. More to come when the delay gets lifted.

So with about 7200 sworn officers, Id say the value of my plain Jane 4006 just tanked.

I wouldn't agree... in two ways.

First, the value of a "plain jane" 4006 hasn't been high in YEARS, so it's not tanking. Secondly, many of us think the TSW guns are particularly gaudy, and prefer the non-TSW versions better. I have a 4566TSW that I got during "the great flood" and heck yeah I would swap it for a clean, no-ugly-billboard-and-horrendous-rail 4566 any day.

No worries whatsoever about your 4006. That pistol was never going to be the down payment on a retirement home anyway.

Do these CHP 4006 TSW pistols have the typical manual safety or the spring-loaded decock only?

Well, I got mine, and I am very pleased with the condition, the price and the pistol. Before I bought it, I knew it was heavy, I knew it had the integral rail, I knew it was decocker only, I knew it had the bobbed hammer and did not have the trigger play spring. I knew they were used but did not know the true condition until it came in. I am pleased.

Question

I also noticed that the CHP barrel had a little groove in the unlocking shoulder that is not on the regular 4006TSW barrel. Take a look at the photo. What is the reason for this? The CHP barrel is the top barrel.

I was powerless against it........

I have two on the way.

They will keep my WVSP 4566 company.

Dunno. Not discussed in the last 3rd gen update (done 3 years after the CHP started getting their new guns).

Might be something specific to something one of their agency smiths requested, or, it might just be some ongoing revision or machining change the factory engineers decided to incorporate.

I remember when I saw a change in the barrel lug machining of a 4566TSW barrel, from one gun to the next (as received). When I asked about it, out of curiosity when calling about something else, I was told that they'd made a machining change when the engineers decided the previous way of machining the barrels was no longer necessary. Also, like how they started "breaking" through the little connecting bit of steel between the firing pin channel and the rear of the ejector depressor plunger channel (not something you'd ever even see unless removing the manual safety assembly).

I've got a 4513TSW barrel that has an "extra" lengthwise, shallow groove machined high on the right side of the feedramp. The rearmost end of the cut doesn't interfere with feeding, but looks a bit weird. I've seen another 4513TSW barrel machined the same way, in the same serial number range. I asked about it once and was told that sometimes they may change machining methods for reasons only known to the engineers. (I also wondered if they used a batch of barrels where the CNC machine operator let a minor hiccup slip through, but since it didn't cause any problems they didn't scrap the barrels. )

Well I couldn't help myself. I have been lusting after one of these since they were adoped. The price was just too good! Just got off the phone from placing my order. He said he had a few left and was expecting another shipment tomorrow.

Going to go great with my 4006 Colorado State Patrol in Melonite

One of the local shops here has a 4003 TSW from the Atlanta PD for $400 (asking price). They've had it a while.

Wow, that Colorado State Patrol in melonite blows away the CHP guns with ugly rail, not even close when it comes to curb appeal/looks! What a fine looking pistol.

Went to Summit's website yesterday, but it appears the latest batch of the 4006TSW's is sold out. Can somebody tell me the price they were asking?

I found one a few years ago and obviously paid more than what Summit is asking but that's how things go.
