If it's of any interest, the original cost of the 4006TSW's for the large CHP order was $675/ea, including 6 magazines per weapon. The extra magazines were for any needed replacement/repair.

I just picked up my CHP 4006. Mine is in about 90-95% condition. Looks barely shot! The agency serial number on the frame, slide and barrel is E9969. One of the mags had "Geller #11118" on a sticker fixed to the floor plate. Must be the officers name and badge number. Trigger is heavier than my 4026 though.

Man, when my CHP buddy talked me into becoming a cop, they were in the 9000 series badge numbers.

Using a printed tape strip (or even older Dymo labeling) became a not uncommon practice for identifying individual LE magazines.

The problem could come when the cop applying the tape/labeling didn't realize he/she still had to allow for the "hole" to be punched so mags that used buttplates and buttplate catches (with posts) could be disassembled for cleaning, as needed.

My two 4006TSW (CHP) pistols from Summit arrived yesterday. Both are in truly great shape with very light holster wear on the metal and light to moderate wear on the grips from a decade of daily carry. Neither of the two show any scratches or dings from use. Bores are excellent. The 4006TSW (CHP) was one of my grail guns and I'm extremely pleased with both their condition and the level of service from Summit Gun Broker.

One of the pistols has grips with the curved back strap, so perhaps the officer that had this one swapped out the originals. I kind of like having an example of both types... All six magazines are AccuGuide, two of the six are LEO marked and one has a black follower (the rest are blue).

Lots of new factory spares are floating around right now for this model. You can find original springs, blue followers, firing pins, sights, grips and blue factory polymer boxes at Midway, Brownells, and/or Numrich for very fair prices. Heck, Midway has the recoil springs for $1.99 each! Downloadable copies of the manual are available on the Smith & Wesson site or you can call customer service and they'll send you a printed copy for free.

Many thanks to smith10 for the original post.

I watched them since CHP got rid of the older ones and the new gun never came up for sale unless a retired CHP tried to cash in . I saw a few for 900 to 1000 range back then . I did a nice clean older CHP 4006 a gun guy must of had it , has a great trigger and gun was taken care off .

Well, I always said that if these came up for sale I'd buy one, despite my dislike of .40 S&W. I guess I'll be calling Summit on my lunchbreak come Monday.

I know a small run of these exact guns were made in 9mm. Does anyone know where they wound up? I'd love to pick up one of those, but the CHP guns will do nicely in the meantime.

The mounting pressure to buy one of these is stunning... ... but I really don't have the money right now. I'm actually grateful that it *is* a .40 which helps ease the pain I'm feeling just a little.

Received mine also. I got one of each, and if they were used, you can't tell. Now, all of the mags for the CHP are marked Law Enforcement. Are these valuable due to that? Maybe we found a new friend for the Forum. Who knows what else he will come up with in the future. On a side note, my FFL said the gentleman at Summit, was polite, knowledgeable, and a pleasure to do business with.

Back in 2014, Mark at Summit had Remington 870 Wingmaster riot guns from the early 80s. They were police model trade-ins from the Arizona Highway Patrol, $165 each in a group buy.

So, yes, it definitely pays to keep an eye on the Summit website.

Enjoy your CHP 4006TSWs. They were very reliable and and tamed the 40 S&W round to a degree. I was able to purchase mine 3 years ago upon my retirement and it served me well.

The CHP has started transitioning to the M&P 4, 1.0. The transition will take 2.5 years. The pistol is issued with 6 mags and night sights. Got to handle one the other day, so far nothing but positive feedback from those carrying it on duty.

Here is my pair, I picked them up from my FFL yesterday. Please excuse my grainy cell phone pics. My 4013's assembly number is evil, lol.

Got mine in today. I was a little disappointed that is was not in the condition that some of these have been. Mine is a 8000 serial number and the agency number is just the serial number with a E prefix. Mine shows a decent amount of carry and shooting wear, some holster rub marks and grips are a bit dinged up. I'd rate it about 80%, but it locks up tight and the trigger is heavy but buttery smooth. Best 3rd Gen trigger I have ever felt. I only had a chance to run 3 quick magazines through it but it was stupid easy to keep in the x-ring.

Much easier than the striker fired replacement...

I got mine today and its a nice clean gun , has some use but its better than I thought I may get . My holsters for Desantis holsters and a black Galco fit the gun perfect.

Not that it applies to you, and your range experience, but your comment made me think of something ...

While some shooters may compliment or complain about the weight of a handgun, there's something to be said for a handgun possessing a certain amount of heft, and balanced weight.

Not just to help with mitigating recoil forces, either.

Some shooters have an easier time of tightening their practical accuracy when using a heavier gun, as the weight makes it less susceptible to small shifts on muzzle movement. More resistance to muscular twitches and breezes, and especially some better resistance to gun movement when "over compensating" while trying to adjust and refine a sight picture.

Of course, this "advantage" can quickly shift to becoming a disadvantage as a range session progresses, and letting a heavy handgun hang out there off the end of your arm becomes fatiguing.

Just thought I'd mention it.

The boat anchor all steel 4006/4566TSW's can really offer some "stability" of hold because of their weight ... as long as the shooter isn't busily swinging and jerking their arms, because then weight, inertia and momentum become more than theoretical issues to ponder for a shooter rapidly trying to make solid hits.

I still rather like my assorted light plastic pistols, but care has to be taken so their very lightness doesn't become something which allows them to more easily wiggle and shift when trying to zero in the sights for an unsupported shot.

I had another instructor shoot it today who has never fired a non-polymer pistol before. They commented about how much snappier the recoil impulse felt vs the M&P, but loved how smooth the trigger felt. Poor youngsters, all they know is striker fired/horrible triggers systems. I am really going to mess them up and bring in a 1911 with a competition trigger....

That's why I like bringing my 5906 to the range. I just aim at the target and the bullets hit that point. Makes me look like some sort of pistolero.

I talked to him again yesterday and he still had the 4006. I already bought a 4013tsw from him and it arrived today. It appears to have never been issued. It is in 99% condition. Best 385.00 I spent this year. I will be buying the 4006 rail gun as well. Don't need it but need isn't a factor....

Recently received my 4006TSW CHP from SummitGB and was a little disappointed to not get one of the Excellent condition specimens that others received. Mine has some pretty significant holster and finish wear, as well as a dinged-up recoil guide rod head, and I would rate it as NRA Good condition. Function seems good and overall I'm happy with the gun for the price paid, but I'll be turning to an auction site where I can see the pistol I'm buying ahead of time if I get another one of these. And I think I'm gonna get another one of these...

I just received my 4006TSW and three magazines from Summit Gun Broker and am very happy with my purchase. The pistol needed to be cleaned, but it is in excellent condition.

I could only find a few very minor cosmetic flaws. The underside of the trigger guard has a very minor scuff, the black right side decocking lever has been replaced with a silver lever, the slide stop and left decocking lever show a touch of holster wear, and the grip has a few minor scuffs (that look much worse in the photos than they do in person).

I ordered three and was hoping to get one gem in the bunch, but I would rate them from 75% to 85%. Luck of the draw I guess.

Is there anything about the CHP 4013s that distinguishes them from any other 4013?

I don't believe it has any of the special features like the CHP 4006TSW models. It does have matching #'s on the barrel, frame and slide that are different from the serial #. I bought one of each CHP model from Summit and have to say that the 4013TSW is one of my favorites out of all of the 3rd gens I have. It just feels right in my hand, and I'm able to shoot it well. I'm going to have to obtain a Shorty Forty to go with it eventually, and a replacement for the 6906 that I let go to a friend who wanted it.

I didn't think it did- here's a picture of it. I didn't actually realize that it didn't have one until I looked at it carefully.

Why wouldn't they be the same? It was just a compact, aluminum framed version of their TSW duty weapon. The same reasons for removing the TP springs from their older A-D series guns, and not wanting them from the get-go when they ordered 4006TSW's, would still apply to a compact 4013TSW version. (I was told this by my friend who retired from the CHP as a traffic officer who also served as a field weapons training officer.)

Fascinating, cnette01! Thank you for the picture!

Unlike the CHP4006TSW, it looks like your CHP4013TSW has a hole in the draw bar for the trigger play spring rivet.

Or is that just a punch mark or divot and the hole has not been drilled.

Both pistols use the "same" draw bar (same size and shape, but different part numbers).

I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned, but I think the CHP4013TSW pistols came from an earlier order than the CHP4006TSW pistols.

The CHP4013TSW pistols have the same configuration of the non-CHP, pre-rail 4013TSW pistols with the MSE/MSF serial number prefixes which were primarily shipped in 1997 and 1998.

S&W customer service tells me that my CHP4006TSW shipped in 2007 and indeed, these pistols share practically all of the styling and features of the "Millenial" (post circa 2000) TSW models.

Thanks again!

John

Like I told cnette01 in my previous post, the CHP4013TSW pistols appear to be from an earlier iteration of the 4013TSW while the CHP4006TSW pistols seem to be from the later design.

And possibly a different order specification.

I pointed out the differences in the drawbars.

John

Yes, there is a hole drilled in the drawbar. And the serial # begins with MSF.

It wouldn't be surprising that the uniform and plainclothes models were ordered at different times. When the CHP decided to take bids to replace their 4013TSW's with plastic, and selected the M&P 40C's, it was a year or more later before they decided to take (3?) bids to replace their 4006TSW's with plastic. I only learned that when visiting with the LE rep who handled the order one day.

The only way to find out about the differences in any specifications would be to ask the member who is a CHP gunsmith. The CHP has been known to make requests of S&W for special features, and the factory does it.

The drawbars have been revised and improved over the years. I remember chuckling when I learned that S&W was using drawbar trigger play springs installed for their DAO guns, even though the spring serves no purpose in a DAO gun. The reason? They said it was easier to just grab drawbar assemblies from one bin of assembled drawbars, whether they were making TDA or DAO guns that day, and not worry about trying to keep separate drawbars without springs to go min the DAO guns.

Now, I didn't bother to look inside the first couple of new CHP 4006TSW's that came through our range (they use our range at times) to see if they'd made a run of 10,000 double stack drawbars sans the hole for the spring/rivet for the CHP runs. I just knew they were ordering them without the TP springs (and decock-only, spurless hammers, integral rails and their own numbers).
