Default Changing a TDA to DAO

Would it involve a hammer change, or could the existing hammer be modified?

There are two different types of DAO 3rd generation autos. Earlier DAOs had slides that were longer in the rear to cover hammers staged further back for shorter DA pulls. Their slides and frames were not built to be optionally assembled as TDAs. To economize parts inventory S&W changed to using only one type of frame and slide that could be assembles as either a DAO or TDA. Those later TDAs were designed to be a quick change to DAO by swapping internal parts. S&W used to do that for customers but not for free. Which vintage is your TDA?

While I do not doubt that with a little creativity an early TDA could be turned into a DAO, since DAOs ordinarily sell for less than equivalent TDAs trading pistols would cost less. Also, altering parts voids the lifetime warranty.

I don't now if S&W does that work anymore, but if they did, I would hope it does not impact the warranty.

I did not word my reply well. I meant to say a parts alteration like grinding off a full cock notch would void the warranty.

Calling S&W and asking what they will do and for how much much would be a good idea.

By the way, it is easy to alter any of the 3 generations of TDAs to carry safely cocked and locked. That can be done so that only putting the original parts back in restores the pistol and its warranty. However, I bet S&W would consider such hanky panky naughty.

I heard that S&W no longer will work on Generation 3 and older autos, nor do they have or supply parts..

Don't know if it is true or not.

I hope (and believe) that's not true, as I reported my Model 411 as having a fault that didn't seem to affect shooting but did affect field stripping and reassembly. S&W seemed very happy to honor the lifetime warranty and accept the pistol for servicing in May of this year. Hoping to have it back in the next two weeks given the time estimate I was given when I called a week or so ago.

EDIT: Apologize for thread-jack. OP - I would definitely call S&W and ask what they might do and what it might cost.

I'd be interested in knowing the answer as well. I posed it a couple of months ago as I have a very nice 3913 that I wouldn't mind having converted to be DAO. Sort of 3914DAO, but in stainless, since I have about zero chance of having a real 3914DAO imported into MA.

At the time another forum member mentioned that it was his understanding that S&W was doing repairs, parts permitting, but not doing modifications or improvements.

OTOH, they list a Autopistol 3rd Generation Action package for $165.00 on the Performance Center section of their webpage.

As others have said, the only way to know for sure is to call and ask.

If you do OP, please post the answer here so the rest of us will know once and for all.
