Default 6906 Unicorn or Not??

IMG_6974.jpg

IMG_6975.jpg

So this is my first post here but I have been coming here for years to soak up all of the useful information. I have acquired a 6906 that I cannot find any information on. The frame is of a later 6906 with a round trigger guard but the trigger is of the older style and the slide is of the older style judging by the markings. It also has the older sights on it. Is this gun one that is just pieced together by Joe Blow or is this one that was assembled from leftover parts? The gun was a police trade-in and all of the others had square trigger guards. Any info will be helpful.

I've never seen one with the frame overhanging the slide in the rear like your's - so I would have to say it is/was pieced together by the department or someone else after it was traded in. All of the Smith 2nd/3rd autos that I have seen, and owned, had the frame and slide matching at the rear.

Well I noticed that too but from what I can tell, the later model 6906 guns had a flatter surface on the back of the slide and the earlier models had a more radiused surface on the back of the slide. I didn't get to pick, so it's just what I got...

Strange ....................Have you taken it apart and reassembled it?

Is it hung up on or have a bent.... (what's the term????).....anyway; there are two/three little levers in the frame that have to be pushed down to move the frame to the rear.

My first thought was that maybe it was a transitional gun and was put together with a frame with a rounded trigger guard and left over parts. Another possibility was that it started life as a 6906 with a square trigger guard and the frame was replaced due to damage or something of that nature and they used all of the other parts.

I'm with GeoJelly,
I've never seen a S&W pistol with exposed frame rails at the rear of the slide before. I can't see S&W letting something like that out of the factory.

I'm pretty sure the slide's lateral position, on the frame, is dictated by the barrel on the 6906 - and other 3rd Gen's AFAIK. Before I'm yelled at, of course the slide stop is in this equation - but the slide stop doesn't directly control the lateral position of the slide - the barrel does. If you put the slide stop into the frame, without the barrel, and the slide will ... well ... slide back and forth! Maybe there is a lot of wear, from the barrel, on the frame and this has caused some of the overhang, coupled with the mismatched frame and slide? This is a deep mystery to my, small and easily confused, noggin ...

Edited to add - or maybe a mis-matched barrel??

Maybe if someone here has two of them, one on each frame, they can swap the slides out and post some pictures.

If that's VADxxxx then looks like the frame is 1993/94 (SCS&W 4th) sights on slide are the early transition....... 1989- ??????

Never seen any other like that .....................

As others have noted, the slide does not appear to fit properly and is too short for the frame. The rear of the slide should be flush with the rear of the frame and the frame rails should be completely covered. The scallop at the bottom front of the slide should line up with the top of the dust cover. It looks to me like someone has replaced the slide.

Definitely a mix-n-match. The front looks like mine but the back end is obviously wronger than white after Labor Day.

Does the Decocker/Safety clear the grip when you push it down?

I picked up a 669 for cheap. It had a broken rear sight, otherwise
in great shape. Things started getting weird soon after. The frame
is marked 669, but it was a 6906. The 669 had been returned to
S&W because the frame had cracked. I called S&W, and got the
history. It's new birth year/ship year is 1994. It still had the 669
slide though. I couldn't find any replacement sites, so I started
buying cheap, complete 6906 slides. First one was too short,
like your picture, last one was too long. Like my picture.
I have got a new replacement rear sight for the 669 slide, but
not too worried about it right now.It shoots/functions just fine
as is.

Since the slide, & barrel have no ser #, you won't know. But since it belonged to a gov't agency, you'll never know what happened. Probably, a gun with a bad slide ended up with a slide from a different gun. Same as a car with a wrecked title being assembled with junkyard parts. Dr.Frankenstein still lives. GARY

Well mine isn't the only one like this. I found this one on gunbroker just now that has the exact same configuration.

So this morning I walk into the gun shop that my 6906 came from and when I looked down in the case, there sat an older 6906 with a square trigger guard but with a newer 6906 slide on it. The slide actually had some excess hanging off the rear of the frame rails. They were having a Father's Day sale going on so I couldn't help but buy it have it transferred to my FFL since it's in another state. It's the same place where I got my other one but I wasn't able to pick my other one. When I get the one in I just bought today, I will be able to swap the uppers and they will both be correct and I will have one with a square trigger guard and one with a round trigger guard. They both came from the same PD so my guess is that the Armorer had them all apart and put the wrong slides on the wrong guns.

Hopefully all will be good.
I was told here that there were actually three different slide
styles, (profiles, lengths.)
For me, one's "too long"
One's "too short".
One's "just right".

Thanks "Goldie Locks".

I grabbed my 6906 out of the safe and looked at it. It appears to be one of the "just right" slides. Round trigger guard, TZR prefix.

When we carried the alloy framed smith we had several develop cracks in the frame where the side plate passed through the frame after a year or so. Smith shipped me the replacement frames and I had to switch over all of the parts to the new frames. The slides didn't match up in the back as well as they had on the original frames.

My first thought was that this was probably a mis-assembled gun.

Hopefully the slide from your subsequent purchase will fit and you will have two perfectly fit and functioning pistols.

Here are a few pictures of it with the correct slide. It shoots great and puts perfectly in my wife's Galco Sto-n-go holster for her shield.

Here are a few pictures of its counterpart. I'm not sure if I will keep it or not. The hogue grips have to go for sure!! If I keep it, it'll be just because it's cool to have both variations.

Your new pistol has an AIP serial number.
Search "Automatic Improvement Program" on this Forum to discover what a rare and significant pistol this was in the 3rd gen scheme of things.

A few years ago someone on the forum wondered if the slide from a 915 would fit on a 6906, and vice-versa.
Being me, I wondered to, and did it. Fit fine, for function purposes, and looks interesting, too. You can see a bit of slide length mis-match, so maybe it argues for a blended gun in the OP's example.
S&W 915 & 6906 slide swap.jpg
The 6906 is a "TCN" prefix serial number. Got it from a Customs and Immigration agent, years ago.

The place where I picked it up had several more and they were all AIP prefixed. One of them was in 95% condition but I passed on it because I wanted the one that had the slide to my gun on it. If anyone is interested in the info for the store to have one shipped to your FFL, shoot me a PM. They are all marked at $299. I got mine for $269 since it was during a Father's Day sale they had going on.

Interesting!
I wonder how they came to have several of these.
Could you ask?
What part of the country are you in?

They were police trade ins. From what I was told, they came from a college university and upon doing research on the university, it looks like they have a small security team that consists of 8 guys, probably retired LE. When I looked at pictures, none of them were armed, so I'm guessing they either carried concealed or they only armed their guys for certain occasions, which would answer why they carried the same guns for 30 years. I'm in the Memphis area.

They also had some M&P15T rifles that they took on trade. They had 6 of them to be exact and when I looked at them, I had to have one. They had those at $499. Yes, y'all read that right.....$499 for an M&P15T. The one I got was unfired & im pretty sure the rest were too.
