Here is my 4006tsw.
I am very happy with mine. I am going to get a new recoil spring for it just to have.
I was hoping for a like new one but I happy with mine.
I would buy another.

Congrats Wendal! Where did you find your CHP 4006?

I know about Summit and Copper Custom, does anyone else know who may have these in stock? I don't use the big auction site, GB, so I'm looking for other options.

I got mine on gunbroker.
I paid a tad more but was able to see the pictures before I bought it.
Only the 2 sources you mentioned have the 4006tsw that I know about.

I'm hoping to pick one of these up. I like the idea of the machined rail and decock only.

My question: is the CHP the largest single LE Org in the Nation? I always thought that was the NYPD but I have absolutely no idea. It would seem to make sense that even though NYC is the largest city in the world, it certainly isn't larger than the State of California.

Oh, one more comment. With ZERO intention of sounding like I have never cared for the TSW pistols... it simply doesn't seem like spending MILLIONS to upgrade from a 4006 to a 4006TSW just isn't much of an upgrade. I would think when you throw that massive amount of money at something, you'd be making a large-scale change. Such as moving from a DA/SA metal gun to current technology polymer striker fire. This move I understand. But millions to move to the TSW from the 4006? That's sounds nutty to me.

Of course it isn't real money, it's taxpayer funded, so maybe I have answered my own question... (sigh)

But yeah, fantastic post!
And we wonder why CA is broke!

though 40 is not one of the calibers i like, if i was on that side of the Atlantic, i would definately get one. for the sake of history!!!. the 4006, besides being the first pistol in that caliber, was also the first to score an le contract for this caliber. chp had ordered about 7000 of them for starters back in 1990 or 1991 afair.

and coming to think about it, it has been the only non1911 steel pistol that was too hard to backdown after the "wonder(what this *** is)plastics" dominated the market. the last dinosaur that would not surrender to the mice. almost 30 years service, and still a civilian market waiting for them. heirloom enough?

I'll repeat, a .40 S&W chambered duty pistol should rationally have a shorter lifespan than a 9mm or .45cal counterpart, but I would expect the number to be HIGH.

So if we look at what has been discussed here (admittedly I am going from memory and not scrolling up) but these TSW's were put in to service when, around 11 years ago? And every specimen seemingly being released for public sale so far seems to show precious little use?

How many years did they use the 4006 before they went for the TSW's?

An alloy frame... it's "game on" for wear and possible life. But I suppose I am in the camp of folks who REALLY wants to see what a worn out full-size steel frame 3rd Gen looks like, because I haven't had the pleasure of seeing one yet.

And I try my best not to be overly skeptical all the time, but when it comes to government spending, my default is to raise an eyebrow. Absolutely, our sworn officers need solid equipment, I would never suggest otherwise. And while I only have the pleasure of owning two formerly issued 3rd Gens and that makes my tangible experience basically meaningless...

Bottom line: somebody show me some CHP 4006's (not these new TSW's) that are too old, too beat-up, and in need of being replaced.

If we think that integral rail 3rd Gens are a scarce beast, show me some end-of-life all-steel 3rd Gens, because I say those are far more scarce.
how can i put a second "like" on this post?

Summit has them back in stock, they just had not updated the item page. It is updated now and says back in stock. I called them today since I had not heard anything yet on the pre-order I placed with them. They processed my order today when I called. I'm looking forward to receiving it, but it will likely be next week now.

I've gotten two from Mark at Summit. One was in very good condition and the other was in extremely good condition. Happy with both.

Wonderful post, thank you, I'm buying one! I'm confused by this statement however: "only one of four models with an integral frame rail, the others being 4566TSW, 5906TSW, and 5946(-M)." When I look these other models up I see a "bolted on" type rail. It is my understanding that this CHP 4006TSW is the only model with an integrated rail. - Am I wrong?

Thanks!

The other steel-framed, full-size models listed also came with the machined, integral rails as an option.

For example, when we were ordering our last shipment of then-new 4566TSW's ('06-'07?), we were told we could have them changed over from the riveted rails to the machined, integral rails at no charge, if we wished. It was a late production option for LE agency customers.

Thank you! So the other guns you listed are out there to be found somewhere with an integrated rail. Good to know so that I don't brag that my CHP 4006TSW is the only such creature! Thanks again!

They were offered and produced, but as I understand it, only for LE agency customers who were already S&W users.

They were produced at the end of 3rd gen LE production, listed in the LE/Military catalogs as an option. I suppose that any agencies who ordered them might eventually trade them in on new guns, and if so, they might end up on the used gun market.

The NYPD just ditched the S&W 5946. there are NIB ones for sale at bass pro shops nationwide. i think glock19 and sig 226 are only duty guns they now use.

S&W told NYPD that they were no longer going to make 5946's, so cadets were no longer going to be able to continue to buy them for academies. That's a good reason to phase out any remaining NIB stock that hasn't been bought by newhires, and release it to the wholesale market.

Earlier this year I heard from someone in S&W LE sales that they'd finally reduced the number of "large" LE agency customers of 3rd gen guns to approx 5-6, across North America. That being the case, they'd told the agencies that the company was finally completely discontinuing 3rd gen production.

Cool post. Two good friends are CHP and I know one for sure purchased their duty pistol. I have seen it and could swear there was no rail. I'm gonna have to look again, this thread has my curiosity piqued. He said he is liking the M&P. Shoots great, quite a bit lighter, more capacity.

They don't stand for anything particular, just part of the normal alpha lettering sequence S&W was using at the time of it's production.

There were certain special models/variations, over the years, that got unique alpha letters that related to something though.

My 4006 is a TFF65xx.

All the ones I've seen were straight grips, the one I have on the way to me has curved. Was this a random thing? not a complaint, just wondering since I haven't found many grips to replace if I decided that it was far worse than the pics show.

Probably depends upon the CHP field office. (Maybe from the academy, too, but you'd have to ask the forum member who is a gunsmith at the CHP academy.)

Many years ago we had a couple cases of extra factory grips, from when the factory was updating their LE agency customers with the revised grips (with the indicator dot added to the front or back of the D-cut on the bottom of the grip). Ours were all curved back then, as we were issuing 5903's as full-size weapons.

The weapons officer for the local CHP field office learned we had a lot of extra curved grips and asked if we'd be interested in trading some of our curved grips for some of their straight back grips. We asked for a small number of straight grips, since it helped some of our short-fingered shooters, but as I recall I think we just gave them as many of the curved ones as they wanted (and we still ended up with a case of extra new grips).

I don't know if they simply ordered extra grips of both straight and curved when the TSW's were ordered, so they could use them as they felt necessary, or some of the older curved grips were still floating around field offices from the time of their earlier 3rd gen's (like happened at the field office near us).

Congrats, though.

By my recollection, ever since the .40 caliber pistols debuted with the 4006 around 1991, all of the advertising, gun mag reviews, and catalogs featured S&W 3rd Gen handguns with straight grips except for the 5906/5903.

I've always preferred the curved grips over the straight grips and I realize it is subjective.

I've just never heard why S&W chose to feature it's line-up with straight grips except for the 5906/3.

Does anyone know (or suspect) the reasoning behind this?

John?

Thanks for the quick replies, i was able to find a curved one. When the gun comes I'll decide if i will pull the trigger on a new set. When I upgraded the 469 I went with the 6904/6906 grips and been hooked.

Also another random question, what holsters were used for this? I don't plan on heavily usage of EDC with it but occasionally range duty i like to holster most guns and reserve the bag for ammo and tools.

I assume this is when in service and not when let go to the public

We still inspect them if they are going up for sale and annotate any deficiencies before they are returned to Sacramento. What happens after that - I don’t know.

I ended up doing recoil spring and mainspring when I swapped new grips on. I have the firing pin one for it and my 469 once I figure out how single side safeties come off.

I ordered one from Summit today. Mark is a class act and very friendly. I appreciate his assistance in adding to my addiction...lol. I had to pay Missouri tax but no CC fee's. I will retire from a small Sheriff's Office in northeast Missouri and this is my retirement gift from my wife. Now, I have to wait until July 31st when I retire to shoot it. My wife is one wonderful gal.

Single side manual safety assemblies are removed the same way as ambi assemblies. There's just no ambi safety lever to remove, and there's no "extra" length of the cylindrical body sticking out beyond the right side of the slide (which makes pushing against it a little less easy).

I am seriously thinking of purchasing one of these from Summit. To the folks that bought one from Mark what is your opinion of these as far as condition? Does Smith & Wesson still service these?

I think their condition depends greatly on your expectations. If you are looking for a mint condition example that has never seen the light of day, then you will be dissapointed. If, however, you are looking for a classic 3rd Gen with an integral rail that was built to CHP specifications, issued to an officer and actually carried, then you will be pleased. These guns typically are in excellent mechanical condition and show light-to-moderate holster wear.

I'm not sure what level of service or support Smith & Wesson currently provides for this model, however many parts are still available from Midway, Brownells, and Numrich. It would be wise to pick up a spare set of springs from one of them and maybe a few of the extra mags that are currently available from CDNN.

The CHP 4006 TSW is a great pistol. Reliable, beefy and accurate.

the ones with the yellow mag followers are now going for $17.99 Now that's cheap for 4006 magazines. They are used. Get em' now.

S&W will not service gen 3 guns. Your on your own. But they are high quality guns. Should last a life time...

As collecting vintage Smiths continues to increase in popularity, you will see gunsmiths specialize in repairing and restoring these. These are simple and easy to maintain firearms, you can replace all the parts yourself and there are a number of step-by-step YouTube videos. The parts right now are still available from Numrich and similar outfits as well as parts from Ebay and Gunbroker. What I expect to see soon are people offering full restoration of unloved vintage Smith automatics. You can get a rode-hard and put up wet Smith on the dirt cheap. The trick is getting the right lacquer for the alloy frames and deciding to use crushed walnut shell grit blasting media or baking soda blasting media to restore the stainless models satiny finish.

I'm not sure how true this is. They still offer the 3rd generation action job , where they basically do a trigger job, check everything for function, and change out the springs. They just refinished another user's 6906. It may be more accurate to say that they do limited service, because they probably don't have the big expensive spare parts (i.e. barrels, slides, etc...) anymore, but they don't seem to have totally abandoned them either.

I purchased one from Summit and was pleased with what I received for $385. Mark was great to work with, and I later purchased another 3rd gen from him. I'd say the CHP model is in very good condition, but that's my opinion. I'll post a pic later.

Well it came in today from Summit and it is very nice. The grips show a little wear as does the gun but not much. I'm leaving her as she is, as she was carried. I do wonder what year it was made and how many were made in total. Does anyone know.

The serial number is CHP3192 if anyone has a clue I would appreciate it.

Yep, I can call S&W and ask but it's more fun here.

Does anyone know a way to make the "Tactical" and other markings darker.
I believe it was done with a laser? I have used nail polish many times to restore chipped or missing markings but these look awfully shallow.

Yup, still offer service. Might be limited, but still offer it through their Performance Center

I have no idea other then to bead blast it and redo it. For me that is the first thing that's gotta go. I never did like the laser etched art work. If holstered enough it will rub off and fade over time.
