Default New S&W incoming - 952

I was at my local gun shop and noted a man selling a few guns to the shop owner.

The last gun I purchased here was a 52-2 that I mistook for a 39-2 and received an education.

So anyway I note one of the guns being sold resembled my 52-2 and as fond as I am of that gun I had to fondle/ask about the just to be brought in new Smith.

952. Its blued, big Performance Center engraving on the slide. Has what appears to be a grip safety but hammer will drop if trigger is pulled and the grip is not held in.

Ill be getting it just south of $2K. No box, 1 extra mag.

Anything I should be looking at/for?

I'm a bit envious of your recent and prior acquistions congrats!

I can't offer you any info on the 952 but hope you share a few pics of it here when you have it!

I'm not well educated on the semi-autos...BUT I'm certain a PC 952 is worth picking up in that price range. Two-tone? Long-slide? Any other unique characteristics?

Fantastic find! It's most likely a 952-1 if it definitely has the pivoting grip safety. On this pistol, the hammer will fall no matter what the grip safety is doing, but the grip safety deactivates an internal firing pin lock.

These pistols are exquisite. It will look much like your prized 52-2 but everything feels different when the hammer falls. The Model 52 is quite sublime with the low-pressure wadcutter round. The 9mm is running twice the pressure, and that blast makes the 952 an entirely different experience to shoot.

The magazines aren't hard to find, they are the 9-shot single stack magazines, same as the 3904/3906/909.

Price-wise, you did fine. You may notice that many 952's go for more money on Gunbroker, but the ones that bring bigger cash usually have the original aluminum PC case and original paperwork.

Its all blue, carbon steel model. Interesting fact concerning the grip safety function. The backstrap certainly pivots but the fall of the hammer had me thinking it was non functional, if its an FP lock only than Id say its a grip safety model.

Im going by the shop now. Maybe Ill put it on the card and have pics tonight.

Confirmed - 952-1, SN KAZ0575.

There were three people that had their names on the tag in case I decided not to buy.

Looks like they will still be looking.

Congratulations!!! There are very few of them available, I keep looking (only have 3) but they are my favorite pistol to shoot. I bought her thanks to folks on this forum's recommendations and have no regrets whatsoever.

Up to now I have probably shot over 30,000 rounds through her and not one failure to fire that was not my fault in reloading. I shoot her at 88 yards and when comparing her to my P 210's she comes out about 3% more accurate.

She will probably like 124 grain lead TC bullets and 3.4 grains of 700X, this has proven to be an accurate load in all my 9MM.

Good Luck and again I do not believe she will ever be worth less than you paid, they are among the rarest of the great S&W's.

Thanks Mr Fowler. Appreciate the load info. My next purchase will be a S1050 tool head, dies and projectiles.

I order my .45 and .38 pistol bullets from Precision Delta, stock Winchester Primers and run HP38/W231. Can 9mm use W231?

I never tried that Win 231 so can't knowledgeably predict how it will work.
As per my coaches recommendations I only used lead bullets, I get mine from Rim Rock Bullets in Montana, good folks to deal with.

Lead it will be than, cheaper shooting.

Im getting indications my work may move from S&W to the Sig wonder 320 in 9mm.

Though a 320 may be a nice gun Im hoping this is the only 9mm I have to feed.

Pics to follow, just leaving the rifle range.

Thank you all for the help.

I believe 231 is a Ball powder as I used it with my 9mm loading a few years ago now. Worked really well at 5Gr,s of powder per round with lead round nose slugs. Single stage was too slow for me as a re-loader so I sold it off. I buy reloads now.

Curious as to your 124g cast TC bullets. Are they sized .355?

She is a real beauty!!! I anxiously await your thoughts after some range time. Once you shoot her, you will find her addicting, no other pistol can compete. You have the best there is in my opinion, and she will never be cheaper than you paid for her.

These are cast .356, the TC bullets proved much more accurate than the round nose.

Okay the 952 made it to the range today....

My indoor gives me about 13 yards from where I typically set up. Todays target is Mr. Idignant, so smug with his hand on his hip....

First 3 shots to check function...

5 more showing a left bias. I didnt have a Borka kit with me or I would have adjusted the sight right. I continued to hold Center of Mass anyway.....

Fire for effect the full 50....

The gun tells you were your technique stinks. I doubled twice out there. By no means is it a recoil monster, you just have to ensure you use good form pinning that trigger back. Thinking you can go to reset and be all firm with taking up the slack is a no go. The trigger is light. I was thinking this might be a neat gun to carry as a sidearm in an AR class but Im not thinking that safe right now.

My other misconception was that this is a COM gun its actually a COH gun...

The second 50 rounds...

Ill have to make that sight adjustment right but if its this good now Im sure after a dinner or two, some romance, you know getting to know one another it can only get better.

OK, color me green with envy! For what it's worth, I use 115 grain SWC lead bullets in my 9's. It leaves very nice round holes and is quite accurate. I get them from Penn Bullet who will size them to whatever size you want. I believe they may still send free samples but not 100% sure about that.

Thank you for the bullet info. I know little about 9mm but will do some study.

I usually buy Precision Delta but I'm not seeing a cast lead 9mm option all are FMJ. Im liking FMJ for its clean handling but Im thinking besides cost savings lead is better for match type pistols. My 52/revolvers all shoot my lead 148 HBWC loading.

Really all I do is plink, no competition. I doubt Ill go through the process of slugging the bore. Im guessing a standard 9mm sizing will work for my expectations. Im assuming also S&W used a pretty tight barrel with these guns.

Regards the doubling I experienced....I attribute it to my poor technique. Ive never doubled any of my other pistols though. Is there a chance my trigger is too light? Are these triggers user adjustable, perhaps the previous owner set it too light. Just curious, man up and learn to shoot your 952 is an appropriate response.

You can adjust the trigger's over travel but the pull weight isn't something you can alter.

Precision Delta 124 gr. JHP over 4.5 gr. 231 works very well in all my 69mm's. But, I've been working with the 147 gr. Hornady STP and Bayou powder coated and I'm very impressed. The 147 seems to have a softer recoil and improved accuracy with most the loads I've tried.

Just under 2 for a no-box, blued 952 is pretty much dead on retail, neither a steal nor overpriced.
