Default 5906 what'd I have, how'd I do, etc. etc.

Went to the gun show at the York Fair Grounds this afternoon and came home with a 5906. I bought my first S&W 3rd gen. pistol a few weeks ago, a 4506, and have been seeking more 3rd gens since then. I have been learning, but am still a novice when it comes to S&W semi autos, so here I am, back for more tutoring.

What do I have here? I am thinking early 5906? Serial no. TCT7344. Came with 1 14 round mag. PD marked LHPD. Priced at $399.99, gave $350 out the door. I think I did well at that price. I don't think it shows signs of being fired much.

Here are some pictures, educate me, please.

Early gun. Non-Novak style sights, square trigger guard, stepped frame, forged trigger and hammer.

All features phased out over the course of production.

Not bad for $350.

You'll drive yourself insane trying to figure out where LHPD is.

Sorry I can't educate you, I don't have one, but I think you did great. Great condition. Great price.
Sure didn't take you long to catch 3rd. Gen. fever. What's next on your list?

It looks identical to my 5906. Mine is a TCZxxxx serial number, made in mid 1989. The product code on my box is 104008, and features the "First Trigger Guard", which is the square "hooked" one. The "Third Trigger Guard" is round. For whatever reason, there is no "Second Trigger Guard".

Mine, like yours features fixed sights and ambidextrous safety. They were shipped with 14 round magazines, in my case it came with three.

It's the 9mm version of your 4506. All stainless, built like a tank, accurate, reliable, a pleasure to shoot.

It looks pretty clean overall. Nice pick up.

Well, would not mind finding a 4006. I would love a 1006, but not willing to pay what sellers are asking. Basically, I look for what i see as good deals, and I think 3rd gen Smiths are still affordable, which is more than I can say for their pinned revolvers. Thank goodness I bought some nice revolvers while prices were reasonable.

My brother lives near Lock Haven, it is his county seat. I am going to tell him LHPD is Lock Haven Police Dept.

Also, I was wondering, can I replace the rear sight with a Novak with out altering anything and would the front blade be compatible? You may think it strange but, I would have preferred the adjustable sights with the guard.

Congratulations I think you did well. Heavy guns that take out a lot of felt recoil and are easy to shoot. $350 for a one in good shape is a deal.

No, the rear of the slide would require machining.

Well you have a 4506,now you got a 5906,talking about finding a 4006,1006 are 'expensive' but imagine how much more expensive in the future.
Next will be 'single stackers',3906,3913,4013,CS9,CS40,CS45. Double stack 6906. Then TSWs'.
NEVER ENDS ! Welcome to the world of S&W 1st,2nd,3rd gen pistols. Too many variants.

I have a 5946 and want to acquire a 5906,have 6906 and 6946,have a CS9 and want to acquire a CS40,have a 1006 and no other 10XX variants desired as I have a 610,have a 4053(converted to 10mm by acquiring a 4053 barrel and using that for the conversion so the 4053 can be either a 40 or 10) and want to acquire a 4006.

The pistol is from the time frame of the grip recall but given that it is a former LE pistol, I would assume it was taken care of at some point. It's still worth checking if the grip has the post-recall dimple.

I have a 5903 (same gun but with aluminum alloy frame.) that I bought in 1992. My mags are 15 rounds, which fits both models. Why the difference?

The early 3rd generation 5903/4/6 pistols came with 14 round magazines with the black follower - a holdover I suppose from the 2nd generation. The redesigned orange follower gave the magazines one extra round.

Ditto.....

that said, having lived in Harrisburg...... Lock Haven is a good possibility.

The one you really want is BBPD or IPD..... "Blue Ball" or "Intercourse" Pa.

Thanks. Thought I've been crazy for the last 25 years. I have 5- 15 round mags.

I bought a RSR serial numbered 6590 in 1991 that has the squared trigger guard and has the adjustable bladed rear sight set up. Came with two or three fifteen round magazines. I love its heft and minimum of felt recoil. Probably my favorite autoloader of all the ones I've owned. I like the 629-1 I scooped up quite a few years ago too.

I realize that gun prices are regional but I'd say you did pretty good. I recently sold a like new 5906 with one California-safe 10-round magazine for $650.

Yep, there is a dimple but it is on the opposite side of the hole. Thanks for reminding me of that, I read about that recall before.
