Default The most perfect auto pistol ever!!??

Whats not to like??? Its a slim, single stack, lightweight, accurate, 10 mm power house! Its been bobbed of all controls and is DAO. Cool... It passes my inspection as one of the best S&W pistols ever and its all metal for God's sake!!! No plastic Toys R Guns here folks. Am I dreaming? Is this a thing of the past?? Well yes it is sir. To bad so sad.. Only problem with these pistols is that parts can be sometimes hard to find I guess... Though I can get 40 S&W easily anywhere.
Whats your favorite???

You forgot to tell us what model it is. Can't like it if I don't know what it is?

It's a 1086. 10mm DAO can only be 1046 or 1086, with the 1086 being the shorter barrel version.

What's my favorite?? Jeez, I can't pick just one!

My wife asked my for a permanent bedside handgun for her to keep so I say, "Sure. Auto or revolver?" She says, "It doesn't matter to me...anything you have is fine." I must have gotten a deer in the headlight look because after a few seconds she says, "You don't have one you can live without?" to which I replied, "I'm thinking!" I didn't know she wanted one of mine. In the end I went out and bought her a Shield. Of course I had to clean it and field test it prior to turning it over so now it has grown on me and is still in my safe...she has my 9c on loan but I see another Shield in our future...gotta get that 9c back!

If I couldn't pick one out for my lovely wife it sure ain't happening here! But here's a pic of my 3954...one of my many favorites.

I thought the OP's pistol was a 10mm conversion of a 4053.

Not my thing but I don't recall a 10mm compact single stack........ got to believe 10mm would really batter a alloy frame!

Favorites ...... 3913NL and a PC Shorty-9

Someone needs to tell my 1076 it's not DAO.

As well, the 1086 nor any other factory Smith 10mm had an alloy frame afaik.

It ain't a Smith, but if you're looking for a compact single stack 10mm. I have and carry from time to time a Dan Wesson CCO configuration 10. It's a dandy.

Nine shot all steel 10 mm with it's cousin a Gummint model. Single action but they get the job done.

Then I wouldn't call it lightweight! My early steel 4516 was a brick compared to my alloy framed 3rd Gen................

Too late.
Smith and Wesson told your 1076 it was NOT DAO when they built it.

It's TDA with a frame mounted decocking lever.

I think I must have had that same "deer in the headlight" look too, when my wife asked for a pistol. I couldn't decide on what to give up either, so I started looking into it. I bought her a Taurus P11 G2, and while cleaning and verifying it's reliability, I decided I wanted one! It fits in the same holster as my Shield, and holds 5 more rounds!

Now it's not the most perfect auto pistol ever, but it's been pretty good so far. I know my 3rd gen S&W autos are much better built, and much better looking. I thought the 3913 NL (or the Lady version) were the best looking guns I'd ever seen when they came out. It took me almost 30 years to get one. But they have to be a contender.

I saw a 1086 for sale in a pawn shop 17 years ago for $400.00 plus tax.

I passed on it as I had the Dan Wesson on order.. I still kick myself for letting that one get away.

Actually just a dumb statement, the first part. I'm not really into these guns except to flip them if I find a good deal.

My favorite is my 39-2,although it is not my edc anymore. It was for a long time and it was my dads duty piece for a few years untill he passed in 1980.It has some holster wear but she's had a lot of rounds down her pipe without a hiccup, ever.

A lot of "perfect" depends on what the use is going to be. For me, right now, my pre rail 3913TSW is just about perfect. If I needed a higher capacity, I'd probably turn to my 6906 since it's a good combination of capacity, reliability, accuracy, and weight.

Maybe the thread title should be "Which 3rd Gen is the most perfect semi auto made"!

I know that the 3rd Gens were made primarily for LE use, but it's too bad that S&W never made a .380 version. Something just a bit smaller than the CS9 would have been really nice for pocket carry.

Not being wealthy enough (or fast enough) to have snagged a pre-rail 3913TSW or pre-rail 3953TSW in Massachusetts, I have to go along with the Model 6906 as the single "most perfect" (more-or-less meaning "most generally useful") cataloged production 3rd Gen pistol... although I might feel different if I ever manage to snag a Model 6946 that meets the TTSH "high condition" criteria. The ability to use "pre-ban" hi-cap 5906 magazines with a "Grip+2" adapter is a huge plus with me. Single stacks are cool but I still shoot best with a slightly wider grip.

In a current production gun, I have to say that my Sig P229R is a real winner in my book... again, with MA-legal "pre-ban" hi-cap magazines, of course!

Then what you really need is;.................

a PC Shorty9..... a target grade 6906 and

a set of Hogue checkered wood grips for the 3913 for that ''slightly wider grip" feel.

I'm a real fan of the 1911, Hi Power and CZ 75 but I have to say that for concealed carry this is as close to perfect as I've found - a S&W . 10mm is overkill, slows the follow up shots and costs you magazine capacity:

Understood and agreed on the PC Shorty9. But the odds of me ever finding one in MA before GaryS and others... and actually being able to afford it... is ZERO. Actually, way less than ZERO.

One of my four Model 3913 pistols still wears the Hogue rubber grips that came on it, so I see the possibility that thicker wood grips would help plus even enhance the appearance. Still, I am disinclined to go that route. The 3913 is not a big range pistol for me. Its raison d'être is as a slender carry gun. How it happens to feel in my hand at the range is not terribly relevant. It does what it does well. It is a work of art. However, I'll take a double stack along if I ever feel I need more than one of my trusty plastic pocket guns.

On first glance I thought the gun in the picture was a 3953 and agreed,........yup, the most perfect auto pistol ever.

Then I saw the mention of 10mm and knew it was a drilled out 4053. Still good, but I'm sticking with the 3953 as The most perfect auto pistol ever.

I have a very definite fondness for the old "GEN" pistols that S&W used to make. I only have a few but they make me smile. Being a revolver guy mostly but once I start carrying one of my 3rd Gens I have trouble putting it back in the safe and reaching for a snubbie K frame. I accomplished that this morning but I have to tell you I REALLY like this CS-9.

I haven't even taken the skateboard tape off that the last owner put on there (if it's visible). It doesn't bother me and I'm lazy so I left it on there. This gun is easy packin', easy shootin', just real easy all the way around.

I carry a CZ PCR and love it, but wish there was a single stack variant of it because I miss the ease of carry that my Shield offers in IWB. The SIG P239 SAS is a single stack and architecturally on the same design target, but it weighs more than my double-stack PCR, and costs twice as much.

A good shooting 10mm compact single stack might take over woods duty and be "the" one carry choice that does most things well enough. Capacity would be lacking but that's not high on the list of needs. Always have spare mag anyway.

No need to worry, I'm not interested in any more double stack 9mm guns, no matter how nice.

Just don't get between me and a 3914DAO shows up somewhere for sale and we'll be just fine.

Ha!!!!! So I'll add double stacks to your 3rd Gen "No Buy" list. That's good to know. I usually lose out when there's competition!

Hmmmm... a Model 3914DAO, heh? I'll have to keep an eye out but I'd be shocked to find one in moonbat Massachusetts.

In 25+ years the addition of Hogue checkered Wood grips has not had any negative impact on concealed carry..... they are not blocky ( or sticky like the rubber ones) but provide a nice palm swell......... like a micro 39 or the ASP/Trapper?Devels they were modeled on!!!!

Oh, I do understand. I get it Bam. But let me reveal a long-kept secret about poor old TTSH and one of his key attractions to 3rd Gens. I love the clean look and feel of the thin black 3rd Gen wrap-around grips on a stainless steel pistol.

There, I finally said it. No pressing need or desire for wood grips, rubber or anything else for me. Honest!

I think I misled you about the feel of the 3913 vs. the 6906 (or 5906). Yes, I do prefer the latter (double stacks) for extended range shooting but I have no great objection to the thinner single-stack 3913 and prefer to keep them as slim & trim carry guns just as God and Smith & Wesson intended.

Remember, I don't actually carry my 3913's. I am too damn old and fat to do anything other than pocket carry one of my many plastic mini-mouse guns. If I need more firepower than that, I'll either stay home or use one of my shoulder rigs.

Someday, if I ever get back down to the size and weight I was in my running days back in the 80's, I'll think about IWB holster carry. Until then, it's plastic pocket mouse power for me.

I really love the 6906 even though I rarely carry it. It's a great shooting gun for the range. Mine came with Hogue wrap around grips, which feel great in my hand and put the gun right on target.

I wish that Hogue had carried that design over to the single stack guns. Since they didn't, I do the best I can to approximate that feel with the Pachmyar grip sleeve over the OEM Delrin grips.

Mine would be a toss up. I too enjoy a nice hunk of reliable attractive stainless steel and Delrin grips. 4516-2 and 3906 with adj sights. I'd probably grab the 3906 first due to round capacity and the copious amount of mags I have for it and the rest of my 39xx guns.

For my money the 4040PD is the most perfect semi-auto, the only Scandium frame 3rd Gen semi produced, thus garnering the "AirLite" name:

Of course the 3914DAO comes in as a contender:

Then there is the 3913NL, also a favorite:

My "wish list" gun would be a Performance Center 10mm based on the 4040PD DAO with Briley Barrel bushing and interchangeable barrels in .40 S&W and 357 Sig. Never gonna happen but one can hope.

As for me, make mine a 3953.

I bought this one new in 1991, is still my primary carry handgun.

It's in the eye of the beholder. I Have fired these straight grip S&Ws and they tend to want to climb out of my hand. I much prefer the feel of the classic Browning Hi-Power.

I kind of like the straight grip on the double stack 9s........ the straight back on the single stack doesn't work for me ...... I need Hogue checkered wood or rubber.

If I could clone the HP grips on to other guns....I'd do it in an instant !!!!!!
