I suspect these are new old stock, or perhaps unused/never issued turn-ins from an LE agency.

NYPD issued those until recently, so they may be overruns or even returns of NOS. I also see that it's the version with no magazine safety.
From the reviews at the Cabelas site, the guns actually come with 3 15 round magazines and night sights. 11 5 star reviews. Which is about what I'd expect for a 3rd Gen.

Sounds like a good deal.
I've got money to spend on other things though. Like shooting the guns I already own.

There's an NYPD guy here named Brendan who advised the Houlton guns weren't up to the Springfield guns and to be aware.
I have a 3914DAO Houlton gun that seems fine, but I'd want to see and hold any out of Houlton first.

By the reviews posted on the Cabela's site, these are new old stock.

Interesting. I've never seen a Houlton 3rd gen in person.

Me too.
There were some NIB 3953s floating around on GB for a while.

There's a gun shop in South Carolina, either York or Lancaster County, that has two NIB rail 5953TSW for sale. If anyone is interested, I'll try to dig the information out.
I'm going to be down there in a couple of weeks and will try to get to the shop and fondle one of them.

I have two Houlton 3914s and a Houlton 5946. All three have been great. I'd say the quality is excellent. I've had no problems with any of them.
I also have a "bunch" of the older 3rd gens. Some of these are great and some are a little rough.
If anything the newer Houlton guns seem more consistent in build quality. I am talking accuracy and reliability and not materials or esthetics.
Based on my experiences, I would not shy away from a gun just because it was built in Houlton.
Now if we are talking revolvers...I'll take the older stuff just about every time.

I mean, I would guess they're using the latest machinery in Houlton... so you'd think they'd be pretty precise.

The 3914 information is interesting. I always had the impression, reinforced by the information in SCSW that 3914 production stopped in the mid 1990s. However, there is also information that the 3914TSW was produced up to 2006, maybe even later.
I wonder if this later than thought production is related to the 3914DAO which was made for NYPD?
The more we know, the less we seem to know about 3rd Gen production and variations.

I remember seeing NIB 3913DAOs for sale on GB a few years ago. I think they were made for the NYPD for off duty carry.

The guns I was referring to were DAO guns made for the NYPD. They have a black finish and are DAO.
I'll check out the model number tonight when I get home. I think they are 3914 even though they are DAO. I could be wrong though...I'll post about it later.

All the ones I've seen are black and marked 3914DAO. The SCSW has a notation about the initial batch of 10 T&E guns being 3913s, but production seems to have actually ended up being 3914s.

Do they still make the 3rd gens in Houlton?
Do they even still have the machinery/tooling?

yeah, they appear to be new old stock... for $600 I'll pass. I'd have maxed out at $450 for a NIB one with a few mags. they're nice, but not THAT nice
and since it's cabelas you have to pick up in store only, no online ordering and shipping to an FFL, which means tax + ffl fee at Cabelas... almost $700 after all is done. hard NO

I bought a new in box 5946 made in Holton from a nearby Cabellas and am quite pleased to own a newly made classic. The night sights are dated 2014
I have a Model 59 no dash and now I have the first and last "wonder nine" manufactured by Smith & Wesson.
Of course I couldn't resist swapping slides with my 6946 to make a DIY short slide variant as well as a long slide 6946:
I will probably leave it in unfired condition making it a safe queen, but I have plenty of other 9mm shooters including this 3914DAO:
As my most often carried 3rd Gen it gets fired quite a bit.

Cabelas is selling them now on sale for $599. I would get one, but they wont sell them in MA because of the hi cap magazines.

Well I for one feel that $600 for a top tier all stainless 9mm is worth it, so much so that I just drove over 2 hours to Cabela's to get one. Apparently one had already sold that day and there were two left. One had the MA roll mark the other had ME. I took the ME one. Brand new, three mags, and night sights. I'm happy

A agree. If I could get a new (or newer might be more accurate) production single stack, I'd drive that far for the deal. I'll have to keep my eye on Cabelas, although I suspect that the one in MA will not get any 3rd Gens, single or double stack.
