Default 3913 help

Hello everyone, I have traded for a S&W 3913. The gun is in good shape but it has what is pictured on the top of the slide and a little down the sides...Any idea what it is? Can it be buffed out? does the slide need to be refinished??? any help is greatly appreciated...

It is rust. Stainless stains less than other steels, but it will rust. You won't know until you try if it'll come out. I'm sure others might have some insight, I'd try some Liquid Wrench and OOOO steel wool first, then maybe some Mothers Aluminum polish.

Hey I appreciate it I have never seen rust look like that.. The 3913 slide does not look like my 5906 slide...The 3913 slide looks like it has some sort of mat finish on the slide. I thought i may be something that needs to be refinished or stripped.

I restore vintage bicycles and instead of using steel wool on steel, which I heard impregnates tiny ferrous bits back into the steel which may cause more rust, I use bronze wool.

...............that ......or a gray scotchbrite pad with some Ballistol on it and a light hand will make the rust disappear

The above is pitting. Don't think you will be able to completely remove it but would love to be proven wrong.

Pitting is from small gas bubbles forming in the casting process prior to machining. This generation of firearms were not CNC milled from bar stock. To get a matte finish close to the original, try laying 600 grit wet/dry on the area and lightly hit it with the nylon end of your gun kit hammer. It will create the matte finish you're looking for.
