Default "dependable" rimfire ammo for Victory .22 pistol?

I stopped at my local Gander Mountain today to see what handguns were still available now that they were being discounted to 20% off MSRP.
When I saw a satin stainless Victory SW22 with 5" barrel, I couldn't remove my credit card, state CPL and drivers' license from my wallet fast enough!
When I asked the salesman about 'preferred' ammo for the Victory, I was surprised to hear two guys behind me begin contributing to the discussion of ammo types for the pistol.
Now, it has been a long time since I've bought either Remington or Winchester rimfire fodder because of quality control issues and excessive quantities of duds found in ammo cans at local gun ranges.
I know my SW M-41 prefers CCI Standard Velocity ammo, but wasn't clear about the Victory's preferences.
One guy recommended CCI Mini-Mags, another liked Federal Auto Match, and the salesman simply recommended I avoid Remington and Winchester 'standard grade' rimfire ammo.
So I'm thinking Federal Auto Match, or either CCI Mini-Mags or AR Tactical, as all three are rated at 1200 fps muzzle velocity.
Now, let's be clear that I'm NOT asking about the most accurate ammunition in your Victory; only those brands that are DEPENDABLE and go "bang" when the trigger is pulled, and/or those brands that have been 'problematic'/with 'dependability' issues.
Thanks for the imput in advance!
FWIW, I paid $315 out-the-door for my new Victory 5" stainless pistol! That's even cheaper than Bud's in KY!

That was a good price!
My ammo observations:
Rem and Win have a poor crimp' causing occasional FTFeed.
Federal auto match slightly better.
Recently burned thru 1200 rounds of Browning with an unusual amount of FTFire.
CCI mini mags; don't know....due to Internet hype they're my doomsday hoarde. I'll have to break out a box today to experience the Ecstasy.
The common denominator here: all my semi 22's and wheel guns like to run clean..****nning them dirty regardless of ammo cause problems.

I'm down to CCI std velocity. I found that HV ammo is not good for .22lr pistols. Watch how you load the mag, sometimes the first bullet may bend when going into the chamber, after that CCI fires and ejects every time. I'm paying $40 for a brick of 500 locally.

Depends.
Try several and see what works.
My Beretta 70s loves Mini mags like I love chocolate!
It shoots some of the others like, ok, if you insist!
My PPKS likes CCI standard velocity.
Neither likes Remington green box.
If I win the 'you got free 22 for life Lottery.'
I'll just tell them start shipping me Mini Mags and don't stop until you see the buzzards circling!

CCI Mini Mags are pretty reliable in most all firearms. I imagine Federal auto match would work well too. The best thing to do is buy a 50 or 100 round box of several different brands, and test them in your particular pistol.

I don't have a s&w victory 22.

I do have Colt Woodsman pistols, Hugh Standard model Bs and Ruger Mark I bull barrel pistol as well as a M34 revolver. I also own a bunch of 22 rifles including Brownings and Winchesters.

I can't remember having a failure to fire with any of these firearms.

I've used Remington standard velocity ammo almost exclusively for over 50 years. Much of that is government surplus stuff.

I wonder if some of the problems folks relate are gun problems, not ammo problems.

Just a thought.

Well, I don't have a Victory either, I do have a High Standard Sport King, a S&W 22A, a Ruger Mk II, an H&R Sportsman revolver, and a GSG MP5 clone (among others). I've used a bunch of different ammo, and the Remington cheapo stuff in the buckets is pretty bad. I get failure to fire in everything with them, somewhere between 5 to 10% of the time. I end up running them through the revolver or an old Springfield bolt action, sometimes it takes 3 strikes to shoot.

I don't get that issue with CCI, or Aguila, or even Winchester. Best is the Eley I picked up during the big scarcity, then Norma, CCI, Federal, then Aquila. The Winchester in the black boxes is better than the bulk 333 stuff. Got some Remington Thunderbolt I haven't dug into yet. The bucket stuff is the worst, but I can still get it to fire in the revolver with patience.

IMHO CCI Mini Mags are the best (but highest priced) in the gun you asked about. The Federal blue box (#510) and American Eagle counter part (both 40 grain) are also excellent. Federal also makes a "milk carton" box with 375 count that is slightly slower (1200 fps) than high velocity but specifically designed for Auto Loaders and is also excellent.

I stay away from Winchester and Remington as their quality has dropped and dropped over the years. Even during the .22 LR shortage I avoided buying those two brands. I did break down once (I was desperate I suppose) and I bought a few of the Winchester M22 black box and before ever shooting them the were re-called!

CCI and Federal Auto Match is all I've used for years in my Ruger MKI, MKII, MKIII.

Auto Match is a bit dirty, is bare lead lubed slug. witness the smoke blown out the muzzle. does OK though.
as usual Mini Mag and Super X about the best mid-range price wise.

I was shooting Winchester Match 22 LR in my Victory and after about 4 shots they wouldn't fire or eject. So had to use a ram rod like tool to get it out of the chamber. Then checked the cylinder of my Rugar Single Six and wouldn't drop more than a quarter of the way.
So only use FMJ in both from now on

Any recommendations for the quietest round that will still allow reliable cycling?

I've had good luck with all but the Remington Thunderbird. I don't use that in the Victory anymore.

The Aguila SE has been very good for me.

I have bought and tested over 10 types of .22 ammo for my S&W SW22 Victory and believe it or not the Winchester 555 has produced the tightest groups at 25yards for me.

I have been getting excellent results from both CCI MiniMags and (believe it or not) Winchester M22. Reliability and accuracy have been identical. SW22 Victory.

So you've made peace with your new rusty' barrel pistol?
I don't know how to say this but; offhand with dirty bifocal sights at 25 yards, color me proud just to have a group!
Tired old eyes plain ol' suck.
You can either see the front sight or the target, not both.
Sometimes neither.
Glad your pistol is working out.

99% of my rimfire ammo use is plinking,,, so accuracy is not mandatory.
That said,, all brands of ammo seem to work for me.

I think I have had under a dozen FTF's,, out of 20,000 rounds. (that is over a LOT of years)

In the case of those FTF's,, I feel the gun was in need of cleaning when the FTF occurred,,,

As with most 22 semi's, you have to buy an assortment of ammo to see which brand runs best in your gun.
They all don't eat the same diet.
I have an assortment, and keep track of which gun likes which ammo.

I would suggest good old CCI-SV ammo for that new semi auto. You just don't need any of the high powered stuff in that pistol at all. Its hard on the frames in most brands of 22' pistols.

I accepted the rust spots on the barrel because I needed the pistol for a match yesterday and sure as hell don't want to send it back and be without it for months lol.

I agree tired ole eyes definitely suck. We can only shoot 25 yards at our club unless it is a match. I wear bifocals as well but picked up a set of reading glasses that allow me to see the sights real good but slight blur the target. I had to black out the rear fiber optic sight, it was causing everything to blur up. I'm not a great shot but managed a 10rd 3" group yesterday at 20 yards with the Win 555 ammo.

Other issues are showing up on my Victory, I will post them soon and most likely send the gun in for warranty when the cold weather hits us (outdoor range).

Not sure if many are paying much attention to the face of the buffer block and inside of the bolt. Keep a close eye on it if you are using HV ammo as I am seeing damage to the buffer and bolt already.

I may go back to the CCI SV ammo as it was runner up to the Win 555 stuff for accuracy.

Default How many rounds before cleaning

I to am a new SW22 Victory owner and trying to learn what brand of ammo this guns likes. So far, I have tried Winchester M22, Remington 22 target, thunderbolt & golden bullet and CCI mini-mag. It seems to like the copper plated one far better than the lead nose. Which brings me to my question: How many round are you able to shoot before you have to clean the barrel? I have had lead build-up as quickly as 30 rounds (lead nose) and as much as 150 rounds before the pistol jams with a round in the barrel. Is this normal for this gun? I have had other 22’s (Ruger Mark I, 10/22, Marlin) all of which I could shoot 400 or 500 rounds and still not have it jam up on me.

Bagger56 Welcome to the Forum and myself if I were you I would try CCI-SV in that pistol. Some of the previous ammo you have used are extremely dirty to use and will lead up much faster as well.

Unlike many of the responders in this thread, I actually have two S&W 22 Victorys. One is box stock(except for the mag safety) and the other has been upgraded with aftermarket goodies.

I have been running Federal AutoMatch in both these guns in steel matches. I only shoot groups when getting the guns sighted in. AutoMatch is not high grade ammo but it always functions. I and some fellow shooters have noticed some obviously underpowered loads and/or an occasional hotter load. The main point is the stuff runs without FTFs or FTEs and is inexpensive and available.

My other go to ammo is Federal Champion 36 gr JHP(copper coated) which also comes in bulk packs.

YMMV

My Victory likes the Federal Automatch, but is even more accurate with the Winchester white box stuff. Both have been reliable. Suprising how accurate the Winchester is.

Being an NRA certified Rifle instructor and focusing on youth, I see lots of different guns. Our club furnishes the ammo. When we get some that displays a higher than usual number of miss fires we note the brand and lot number. In our case, we have rifles for the youth to shoot but about half bring their own rifle. As such we might have 3-5 different makes of rifles being shot at any given time, but they are all shooting the same ammo, except those firing targets for Distinguished Expert, they get premium Eley tenex ammo. Those at lower skill levels get whatever we could get at a decent price. When misfires start happening it usually runs in all guns. A given lot number seems to all be similar. We usually get 10-25 cases at a time (10 bricks of 500). Just because one lot from any manufacturer has misfires does not mean a different lot will. If you encounter misfires, note the lot number and rule that lot out, but you don't need to cross off that manufacturer, unless a repeat pattern in different lots happens.
Usually a misfire will fire, if turned and re-chambered. Those get used in slow fire by some or in warm up practice. If a round is turned and still misfires it is sent to the misfire can.

I've used Aguila, Federal and CCI without any problem during the last year. Now that my silencer has been released by ATF, that may change when using it.
