An under appreciated 45
Lately I have been using my 457 quite a bit. For training new shooters and for serious purpose. The 457 is truly an under appreciated compact 45.
It recently turned hot and humid in NC. It will remain so probably till October. Out of all my handuns generally and my 45s in particular, the 457 stands out. Especially as a hot weather, easily concealed, 45 carry gun.
For one thing, it is the only semi auto I own that I really dont care about. As in, it is simply a tool in the tool box. Sort of how I view Glocks. Nothing attractive about it, except how it functions. That is to say it is bet your life reliable and fairly accurate using Winchester Ranger RA45T.
Since I took it out of its plastic case, it has never malfunctioned. While I no longer keep logs on my pistols round counts, a casual estimate on this 457 would indicate somewhere between 6K and 7K rounds through it. The majority of that round count achieved over the last two years while I was working part time at the local indoor range as an instructor. And was able to get ammo at cost!
While the 457 doesn't appear on my list of "favorite" 45 carry guns it does wind up on my belt more often than not. The size and weight are about perfect, for me. During my time at work, the 457 gets carried IWB in a DeSantis Nemesis. Out of all the handguns and holsters I own, the combination of the 457 and Nemesis holster is the most comfortable to use. Especially in hot weather. Perhaps I should reevaluate my list of favorite carry guns.
I did modify a couple of things on the 457 to suit me. I took the Hogue rubber grips off and put the factory OEM Delrins back on. I then put a Gripper rubber textured grip sleeve over it. This retains the thin easily concealed 457 grip while still giving me the control I require to place a fast accurate 1st shot.
I also removed the baseplate on the mag and replaced it with the rounded baseplate from a 4513TSW. Improves my hold on the 457 and really changes the feel of the 457 in the hand. I think S&W should have placed the rounded baseplates on all the compact mags.
I still need to get around to replacing the plastic rear sight and maybe looking into a coating on the rust prone slide. Although since I began regularly wiping it down with either 3 in 1 oil or Ballistol, I have not had any rust form. Perhaps that issue is behind us.
And that is about the only issue I have had with this fine, functional and under appreciated compact 45. I am well satisfied with it. How do you gents like your 457s? Regards 18DAI

Stop it 18DAI. Based off your comments on the 4566 and 4513 my wallet is a lot lighter. Recently you've tried to entice me with a CS45 and now, the 457. When will it end?

My 3rd Gens are of the 9mm variety, but if I were to go down the .45 caliber rabbit hole a 457 would be my first choice.

I just cant see wasting money buying ugly guns with lousy triggers, that you then have to spend more money on buying Apex parts, to give them everything that the factory couldn't be bothered to.
Makes no sense nocents. YMMV Regards 18DAI

Kind of how I started with the 915........got one used LNIB..... for when I didn't want to use a "good" PC gun or a 3913,5906 or 6906.
But I fell in love with the girl no one took to the Prom........while I sold one to a good friend in need of a hi-cap 9mm...... I got another and two spares!!!!

Great, now 6rnd 4513tsw mags will be even harder to get.
Well, they'll be out there, they just won't have bases.

My only .45 is a 457. I think the only other one I'd consider would be a pre rail 4513TSW, but that's not a sure thing.
I think I'd only trade my 457 in for a 457S. I'm kind of surprised that 18DAI doesn't own one of those, although his "more favorite" 3rd Gen compacts fit that bill.

It's no secret here that I'm a 457 guy -- 457S, to be exact -- and that I shoot it as well as I have any compact .45 including the pre-rail 4513TSW I have and the Shorty 45 I once owned. That's all on me, of course, but I just absolutely love shooting my 457. I do admit that I care about it a bit more than I did the black one I once owned, and it rides in a nice holster in my vehicle, just to keep the scratches off of it. I really need to take some pictures of it one of these days, just to prove that the girl-next-door gun can look pretty good and be a lot of fun to take out!
And yes, 18 is the one who got me interested in the 457 guns in the first place.... ....he's an enabler, he is......

Only when he beats me by 10 minutes or so to the very best 3rd Gen deals in the entire state.
Or when he snaps up the highly-desirable premium 3rd Gens when I am too short on cash to even be looking.
Or when he heads up north and wipes out every desirable 3rd Gen mag in the KTP bargain bins.
Or when..........

I do have that going for me, true.
An LGS that I have bought some stuff from just put a 457 with two mags up for sale for $299.95. If I wasn't flying to Charlotte tomorrow, I'd definitely go up to take a look.
If it's still there when I get back next week, I'll go for a look see.

Great write up on the 457. I'm loving it's heavier, shinier older brother--the 4516-2.
Are there any functional/mechanical differences between the 457 and 4516/4513? I noticed has the lug on the barrel, which is absent on the CS guns.

Or when I go to SC and plan to stop in a couple of gun stores/pawn shops down there and look for magazines.

Plastic magazine release, dovetails for the sites are different, finish machining is not quite as good. Oh, plastic recoil guide rod. There are probably some other differences, but I can't think of them off hand.

The first 457 I ever stumbled upon was in a pawn shop in 2008 (I was looking for an aluminum framed Colt Commander). I did a little bit of internet research, and then went straight back and bought it. I could not understand how it was so un-appreciated.
I liked it so much that when I came across another one about two years later I bought it as a spare. I gave up looking for a Colt.
These are my two most-carried 45 autos. I have never experienced any kind of a stoppage with either one.
My holster of choice is a Bianchi #5 made for a S&W 4506 (I never could figure out the various S&W semi-auto model numbers).

MattyD380 the 457 DOES have the locking lug atop the barrel and corresponding cut in the slide.
The early production, blue/black 457s also have forged hammers and triggers and roll marks. They use the same dual recoil springs as the 4516-2 and share mags and grips.Regards 18DAI

Anybody can have a 547 and it's a great gun! Mine was sent to member BMCM for sight installation (Big Dot) and general slide tweaking, with an all metal follower and fresh recoil springs. ( Thanks Master Chief!)
The 547 is available but you have to "Pony Up" to close to $2k. Worth it to me, and a nice 70th birthday present to myself.
It was hanging out at this site that made me aware of the 547. Once I found out what it was all about I decided to acquire one. It took a few attempts at auctions but finally snagged one for under $2k and was quite pleased with it's condition. Nearly flawless and very tight. Luck of the draw I guess.
That I put on combat grips and use it pretty much as EDC now that I have shot it a bit would make true collectors cringe. This weapon, because of it's unique design and 9mm chambering makes it a collectors item, most would put it in the safe and handle it with white gloves.
To me that would be like having a great hunting dog and leaving him in the kennel. That dog should hunt! and my 547 should and will be carried and shot.

There is a big difference between a 457 (in 45 ACP, and is the topic of the OP) and a 547 (in 9 mm).
Those S&W model numbers drive me crazy at times.

Iggy and vigil617 mentioned two other excellent 45 carry guns that are on my list of favorites. The original 6 - round 4513TSW and the CS45. I guess a quick summation of my impressions of these other two models, vice the 457, may be helpful to those lookingfor a 3rd gen compact carry gun.
Its no secret that the original 4513TSW is my all time favorite 3rd gen pistol AND favorite carry gun. There is so much that is right with this pistol. On my own time and much of the time at work, it is my 1st choice. But I developed an attachment to mine. So, a cheaper model is being substituted. One that is easily replaced.
Ive gone on about the 4513TSW for many years, so I will not do so here. Suffice it to say, that all that is good about the 457 is magnified in the 4513TSW model. Including the purchase price.
The CS45 is the only 3rd gen 45 that I do not have a lot of experience with. I only aquired an example late last year. I am still working with it. At this point, while it has the reliability exhibited by all my 3rd gen guns, and is more accurate than many of them, the Hogue grips are problamatic, for me. They make the pistol rise up out of the IWB holsters I am using. Not good. But a solution is in the works. More on that down the road in another thread.
In comparison to the 457 the CS45 is slightly lighter and shorter. But when the 457 is wearing OEM grips, it is easier to conceal and carry than the CS45, for me. Mags for the 457 are much easier to locate and in my experience usually cheaper to buy too.
At this point in my experience with the CS45, it is parked and the 457 is in my holster. And I guess I would advise a person trying to decide between the two to buy the 457. It will cost less, be easier to carry in a generic holster and be easier to shoot for the average person with limited experience shooting compact 45s.
My other piece of advice to said person would be to save a little more and just by a 4513TSW. If you can only afford or want one, that is the one to have, IMO. Regards 18DAI

I should go up and snag that bargain Model 457... ... just to help even up the score.
Lucky for you, I have a different acquisition target in mind once I pull myself out of this current financial tailspin I'm in.

I agree with 18DAI on the Hogue grips. My solution was a set of not inexpensive wood grips.. Gun is accurate and easy to shoot, and I found several carry solutions that work for me.

Pictures of both kinda show the differences. The cs45 doesn't
have a 4513tsw base pad on it's mag. I DO NOT want to
encourage that practice, (until I get a few more.)
I may put the original hammer back on the cs, just playing
around with it.
K, pic of the cs with pre-rail 4513 mag base on the cs mag.
LOTS better.

Thanks. Been looking for a CS45 for about a year now. The local stores, as well as the largest Florida gun show vendor is also looking for me. Whenever I find one, I will have that hammer installed, just like I did on my 3913, & 4516. A SA/DA gun should have the ability to be cocked on the first round. GARY

I am sure that,18DAI was instrumental in my acquisition of a 4513,457,CS45 and my 4506. Several others on this forum fanned the 3rd gen flames as well and I do love them all even the 9's and 40's. Please don't hold it against me but due to rebate I purchased a Shield .45 about a month ago.It is also a nice EDC. I have several more S&W pistols and revolvers, but not a single Glock.

Another under appreciated .45 ...
The 4586:
While it can be concealed rather well in Mexican Carry I wouldn't exactly call it a hide out gun.
A big, heavy slab of stainless steel. It's very weight helps with holding sight alignment with it's excellent double action pull.

I'd only be interested if it were stainless. Which I doubt would be listed at that low a price.

Lucky for you, I have a different acquisition target in mind once I pull myself out of this current financial tailspin I'm in.

While stainless is more durable and can be bead blasted to restore, I'm a fan of black weapons especially for carry.
I have a 4513-2 that is very nice and shoots well but when it comes to carry the 457 is the one that goes with me. Besides the black finish, the alloy frame makes for a lighter load.

My 457 was purchased as a result of the NY Safe act. I like it a lot except I have not found a holster I like and the weight is heavy compared to a M&P Shield or M&P 45C.
In fact, the ease of shooting this gun and my preference for the 3913 (and college tuition for the kids) kept me from adding a M&P Shield at the low prices.
I like the square profile view and snap shot picture it offers. "Like a Block". I love the trigger and have come to prefer it's shape and black profile to rounded 3913's.
PLUS, the 45 ACP rounds STAY in the magazine unlike the 3913 9mm rounds which tend to slip out of the magazines on removal.

You have more "unique" 3rd Gen models than anyone else I know.

There are handguns I love in "bright" stainless and there are other handguns I prefer in blue/black. While the vast majority of my 3rd Gens are "bright" finished, my three blue/black ones are just as effective and equally treasured.
But then you get into my Sigs, CZs, HKs, Berettas and Rugers and it's exactly the opposite. They are overwhelmingly blue/black! Go figure.
About a billion years ago (or so it seems), I started out collecting mainly S&W stainless steel revolvers. I still have all but one of them. And yet now, the only S&W revolvers I desire are blue, Blue, BLUE! Again, go figure.
I'm just a confused old man I guess.

The vast majority of my handgun accumulation is stainless steel. The reason for that is all my handguns must be capable of serious usage. No target pistols or range toys. No safe queens either. Those guns all went during the great 18DAI downsizing of 2015-16.
The hot and humid NC weather is rough on working guns. And I guess I am rough on my working guns too. My 4513TSW and 4566 former duty pistol having more dings and scratches than a NY Taxi cab.
Stainless just holds up better and requires less maintenance and attention. Which is good given the levels of maintenance and attention wife 2.0 requires. And even I have only so much spare time.
Someone asked why I dont have a stainless 457. Two reasons. One, I have only ever come across one example, in person. At a local gunshow back around 2007 or 2008. Right about the time they ceased production of the 457. It was NIB. Unfired since the factory. They were real proud of that gun too! IIRC asking almost $650 for it with box and one mag. Very optimistic seller.
The trigger on that example was not very good. Ok in DA, but a hard let off in single. And having come up on S&W stainless 45s, this stainless 457 just didnt look right. The stainless colored frame looks too thick, to me, on that model. The whole pistol just looks.....different. And not in a good way, to me.
The second reason I passed on a 457S Is that I prefer roll marks and forged parts. I paid my dealer extra to find me a 457, NIB, with forged parts and roll marks. Yes, Ive heard all the arguments from the S&W apologists and MIM defenders, but I find forged parts to be 100% the strength of forged parts.
And I didn't want the cheesy lazer etched markings either. Looks cheap, to me. Regards 18DAI

Speaking of preventing rust.....
We were smoking and joking in the LGS yesterday and the topic of rust came up. We took in a well used Glock 30 that had some scratches and a bit of surface rust around the rear aftermarket sight.
One of the older guys carries a Glock and said he just wipes it down with one of those yellow silicone rags that Davidsons ships us.
So I took out my 457, which had taken on a gray color on the slide from holstering and handling. A few minutes wiping it with the silicone impregnated cloth and the slide matches the frame! Even better, the factory Sharpie marker black finish now looks like Melonite. Bonus! Regards 18DAI

Oh dear Lord! And it will look that way for as long as it takes the silicone to dry!
Rinse and repeat? Like every 30 minutes?
The infamous "Sharpie" finish is just sad when you think about how good that slide finish could have been. I am fortunate that all three of my black Value Line guns are still ANIB... otherwise I wouldn't have bought them *or* I'd be shopping for a local refinisher to put the finish on those guns that they deserve.

You might be interested in an on-line article I wrote many years ago comparing the 457 to 3 other compact .45s. It's pretty extensive.

I had a M457 which I gave to a friend after he gave his .45 to an in-law after some murders in the family. Long story......
I really liked that 457 but I was willing to part with it because I had and still have a CS-45. But it is a great little handgun!

As often as you get to run your pistols, I would think that those "blemishes" would rub right off!
