Has to be 5906. Everything else is a variation of it, be it size, caliber, construction, specialized usage etc.
this isn't necessarily the same thing. Lots of people "must have" the smaller CCW versions (6906 etc), others a different caliber.
Consider 3rd Gen the way you consider "1911"... ICONIC would be a milspec, 1911A1, with blue or parkerized finish, 5" barrel, .45 acp.
You can get a 1911 in any caliber, in varying barrel lengths, with aluminum frame, chromed, stainless, cerakoted etc. Grooves all over the slide, rail if you like, ambi controls. Might be your "must have", but it's not the "iconic" version.

Another vote for the 5906. Vast numbers of them in LEO holsters over the years. And also the 4506, because they were iconic.

Another vote for the 4506.
And if what appears in the holsters of movie/TV heroes is any indication, the 4506 wins hands down! Regards 18DAI

The 4506 jumped to mind first, but personally it would be the 3913/4.

I just bought a 3913 LS so I nominate it.
But, then, I haven't even shot it yet.

4506 my vote as well.
From the movie reference, the co-stars carried 5906... the iconic main stars had the massive 4506.

Got to say; I've got 3 answers...................
The 3913/14 as the descendants of the ASP, Devel and Trapper "chopped and channeled", "hot rodded", customized ; 39-2s of the 1980s.......which inspired the whole 3rd Gen of guns.
What gun did Novak first work on with S&W?
The 4506 and 5906 are classic Police autos (Wonder 9 and Bad a-- .45) of the 80s and 90s..................I can hear the Miami Vice* theme as I type..........
*OK I know it was really a 645..... but the second gen guns were a "transition" generation IMHO!!!!! The 669's grip was a 2X4 at best!!!

Well, I have an obscure old....
I have an obscure 5943 (DAO, Alloy Frame) but I would go with the 5906 as being THE gun to have. To me having 5 or 6 'most iconic' guns would be a step in the right direction.
Why, O Why are these guns being obsoleted? I have a bunch of semi's but I'd trade them all in for third gens of different configurations starting with the 5906 then the 3916.
Geeeeeee. That's nice to think about.

I'll mix it up here. My vote is for the 3904 simply because it is the final interation of the original pre model 39. It's great to pull out the pre 39, 39, 39-2, 439 and 3904 and admire the evolution. Alloy frame, single stack, blued, 9mm with fixed sights. With all of the love for the 3906, its weird that the 3904 doesn't get a lot of hype. I'll never sell mine. Even though its not recognized yet as an icon, it could further down the road.

Nope, you're correct, for season 5 anyway. A 4506 was used, as that was S&Ws newest model. Masterful product placement. Joe Six-pack couldn't afford a Ferrari, but could probably plunk down enough for a new stainless pistol!
If the show was still running today (like the Simpsons?), would Sonny be toting an M&P 45??? Perish the thought!

Sonny Crockett may have introduced us to the beautiful stainless 4506, but DET Vic Mackey made it an icon.

Definitely the sexiest of them all, but the first one that came to my mind was to 1006. Followed closely behind is the 3913. It looks like I need to go find a 5906 though, according to the polls.

Guess I've waited long enough to opine myself. Has to be the
4506, (4506-1 to be exact,)
I have shot thousands of problem free, very accurate rounds
through it since buying it new in 1992. It was my first purchase with my then new F.F.L.. It was the first S&W semi I ever took
completely apart and totally went through to "improve". Back
then Brownell's had half a page of parts for it, and I got every
one. All the Ed Brown stuff is now on my 645, but it is still the
best 3rd Gen S&W ever.

Model 59 ~ the first Wonder Nine ...
My vote is for the first generation of high capacity 9mm Smiths, the Model 59.
This weapon started a revolution in double stack 9mm's that continues to this day.

Great gun, wrong generation...
Good thought though. Next poll should be #1 S&W auto.
