Default Anyone had a gun replaced under warranty ?

Bought an E Series 1911 on April 1st of this year. After about 100 rounds the plunger bracket on the left side of the gun came loose. Dealer sent it to S & W for repair. Eight weeks later I got the gun back, but it appeared that the weapon was never touched as the bracket was in the same condition as when I sent it. Sent it back and got an e-mail saying they were going to replace it. Yikes ! So, that is fine but I am going crazy wondering when I will ever see a gun again as the time I did get to shoot it, I fell in love with that gun. Anyone ever had a gun replaced, and how long did it take ? Thanks.

Mine was replaced by brand R****. Since they didn't have a replacement on-hand I had to wait until the next run of that model, which was about a month. Don't know if this scenario will apply to you though.

Once a new pistol is shipped to your designated FFL you'll have to fill out the ATF papers & pay whatever transfer fee your dealer charges, since it'll be a different SN#.

My experience with brand K***** was the same as BLUEDOT37's. Took about 3 weeks to show up at my FFL after they told me they were replacing the pistol.

Thanks for the replies,,, Smith also said they had no guns in stock and would have to make one. Can't imagine them making one gun just for me rather than waiting to start another run. I can always hope.

I sent in a 1911 large lettering billboard model, one of the first 300 made because of a recall on the slide. I called S&W and told them it was shooting just fine but they said send it in anyway and they would take a look at it. What I received back was my 1911 with a completely different slide. I called them immediately and was told they don't repair the slides they just toss them and put a new one on. Needless to say since I bought the large billboard model for that specific reason I was not too happy. Live and learn I suppose. Didn't keep me from buying more Smiths though.

I sent a new Walther PPK/S back on a recall. I had never fired it. It did not have a scratch on it. I sent a note with it saying it was new, and I wanted to get it back in the same condition. When I got it back it had deep vise marks on the right side of the trigger guard. I called S&W and complained, I was very pissed off. They sent a label to return it, which I did. I then got a call saying when they started making them again, in several months, I would get a new pistol with the recall problem fixed. True to their word, they sent me a new pistol.

Somewhere in the fine print is a disclaimer stating that they are not responsible if upgrades to the gun may alter cosmetic features, & you don't get back the same as you had. EG. You buy a new gun, & it has the small billboard. A week later they change the design to the big billboard, which is what you really wanted. You can not return the gun, even if unfired for the newer design which is what you really wanted. Similarly, you returned your gun with the big billboard, & they sent you the latest, & greatest IMPROVED small billboard gun. You don't like the look, but that is now what they currently make. That's just business. As long as the new slide works properly, & is cosmetically fine, that's all that matters. GARY

Don't go crazy, it's just a gun, give it some time.

I had one of my Glocks replaced. Took about 3 weeks total. From sending out to receiving.

Well...sorta! I had a brand new Walther TPH, which came apart in my hands after about the 2nd or 3rd magazine (been awhile, I forget exactly). I sent it in for warranty repair to S&W via the LGS I had purchased it from.

About 2 weeks later I received word that thd TPH could not be fixed, and no more were available. They offered me $100, cash...for my brand new TPH! Well, needless to say, I was furious. After I sent off a blistering reply to them, they responded with an offer to replace the TPH with a brand-new PPK or PPK/S of my choice.

Even though I was still steamed about the TPH, I decided it was infinitely better than their ****** $100 offer, so I told them I'd take a SS PPK in .32 ACP. I can't recall how long I waited, but I don't believe it was too terribly long, and my PPK arrived. I was pretty tickled...until I noticed that, while the markings on the box clearly indicated it was a .32 ACP, the gun was actually a .380. So...kinda peeved again.

I was going to gripe at them, and see if I could actually get the .32 I wanted...when a good friend of mine, who happened to be working at that LGS at that time, told me that practically every "Smith & Walther" being sold out of that shop at that time were being returned for multiple failures. He advised that, given the obvious poor quality of these firearms, that I sell the PPK immediately, unfired, take my "profit", and save myself any further aggravation. I took his advice, and sold it to a guy at a gunshow. Ten minutes later I saw it out on a table, marked $150 more than what I had sold it for! Oh, well...

Default TWICE, BOTH RGR'S

A MKll gov't with a cracked frame weld in the rearmost area. Not sure if I got a new barrel, new frame yes. The second was a full replacement for a SP101 with chronic forcing cone issues.

In April of 2012, thanks to this forum, I discovered that my 1993 vintage 442 Satin Nickle finish gun had a cracked frame. Since I was going to the factory for a tour, I brought it out with me and dropped it off.

Five days later I got a call from CS that the frame was not repairable (not a surprise), that the damage was covered under warranty, and that I would be getting a new gun from them. Since they no longer made the non "J Magnum" frames and no longer made a Satin Nickel finish, I was given the choice of a 442 or 642. I chose the 642 and since my original gun was a no lock, I asked if I could get a no lock version. The CS guy said sure, but it would be up to 3 weeks before they could ship to the FFL since they didn't have any in stock and I'd have to wait until they were making a batch up.

It actually took about two weeks, but I did get the gun.

I've found CS very good to deal with over the phone.

Wow,,, most folks seem to have had their guns replaced in a pretty timely manner. This has actually been going on since mid April,,,, I hope they don't forget me.

Oh well? That's how it works at a gun show, or LGS. We make JACK on new guns. We make 3 times more on used guns. Those tables at the show cost between $80-$110 each. That's how it works. Should he sell the gun for the same amount he gave you? I think not. Try working on my side of the table at a gun show. You will learn a lot. GARY

Sent in a 642 with a cracked frame, they sent me a brand new 642 within 2 weeks. S&W also paid my transfer fee.
Never had any issues with CS at all, I must be blessed.

Had a 637 with a cracked frame replaced end of last year. Took about 6 weeks start to finish. From my conversations with the S&W rep, the speed of the replacement depends a lot on how many of that particular model are rolling off the line. I replaced the 637 with a 442 (same price, so S&W didn't care). The 442 is a popular revolver, and they make lots and lots of them, so the turnaround was pretty quick. Can't speak for your pistol exactly, but seems like it will take a little longer for a previously uncommitted one to spit out . . .

I blew up a Model 19 in 1997. S&W replaced it, at cost because it was not their fault in re metallurgy. S&W let me pick any gun I wanted and, in 2000, after I got around to sending the blown up gun to them, they replaced in a very short amount of time. With a CS-45, I might add. They said any gun and that was my choice. I would say it took a few weeks, max, and it might have been under two weeks but I can't recall for sure.

I would take slight umbrage at your attitude...but I didn't get specific about the deal, so there's no way you could know.

To begin with...I've spent plenty of time on "your" side of the table. You are not the only person to sell guns, in a shop, or at a show. Yes, I'm keenly aware of the profit margin of new versus used guns.

Secondly, I have no issue with people, dealers or otherwise, reselling items at a profit. However...the gentleman to whom I sold the gun in question was just walking around the show, he did not tell me he was a dealer. He haggled me down on price, with a sad story which I will not relate at this time, and I sold it to him. As it turned out, he was a lying piece of garbage, as are an unfortunate number of dealers, I have noted. I do not generally care to sell to dealers, because I realize they need to make a profit, and I'd prefer to sell it for what it's worth. Instead, he lied about his situation, lied to get a lower price, and *then* put it on his table. And no...that does not sit well with me.

And none of this has anything to do with the original topic. I just felt compelled to address the tone of your reply.

Tim

You fell for his s0b story, & nobody put a gun to your head to accept his low ball offer. The only reason I replied was because of your "how dare he mark up the gun I sold him $150" statement. It's all good. My previous post was for the benefit of others. GARY

I had a Rock Island replaced and my turn-around time was about a week.

My son had a SIG replaced and his turn-around time was between two and three months. However, when he called about the slow turn-around, he found SIG did not have his gun in stock. SIG gave him the option of waiting for the next production run of his specific gun or taking a substitute; he took the immediately available version of his gun with a different finish.

Different manufacturers ship replacements in different ways. While Ruger is well known for only shipping to a FFL, both SIG and Rock Island shipped my and my son's guns directly to us. The manufacturer records receipt of the old gun from a customer and records the number of the replacement gun sent to a customer.

Bottom line: At the moment the gun left your hands and the cash left his, you were happy. That is all . . .

Smith said they would only ship it to an FFL and asked me which one. I wondered why as I had shipped it to them directly the second time.

Because it will be a different gun. If it was a repair of the same gun, they'd send it to you. New gun, FFL . . .

Manufacturers can deal directly with customers to replace guns under federal law. However, the same is not true for every state's laws. Some manufacturers deal with each state according to its law, while other manufacturers have apparently adopted a "can't go wrong going through a FFL" approach. I don't know which approach S&W uses.

I had a first gen stainless T***** 24/7 .45 that was part of the huge class action suit that happened a couple of years back. I sent the gun in before the whole thing became a big news story. Original CS call told me it would be a couple of weeks. Since I lived in Miami at the time, I didn't think much of it. After a month I called to check status, they said about 4 weeks.. This was the reply for several months until they told me that they had no ETA on the stainless, but could get a blued one sooner. Fast forward to 10 months later, and I finally got the blue replacement. Fit and finish horrible, and it just didn't feel as good as the original.

I've been blessed with no issues from my other guns, including the 15-22.

I bought a Centennial 442 from my boss, as a "parts gun", for $25, as it had a yoke-crack.
I sent it back to S&W, and it was replaced with a new gun, but with same serial #, avoiding complicated state paperwork. When I told my boss (just before retiring), he was livid.

Totally unlike my experience with dealing with a BMW motorcycle over cracked frame welds...the process took a year (under warranty), half of which was waiting for a new VIN sticker, making the bike to be unsaleable in the meantime...Loved the bike, but that was unacceptable warranty service. Migrated to Honda and Yamaha after that fiasco.

I do not generally care to sell to dealers, because I realize they need to make a profit, and I'd prefer to sell it for what it's worth. Instead, he lied about his situation, lied to get a lower price, and *then* put it on his table.
Sneaky and underhanded? Sure is! But it is a common tactic used at shows. After awhile you recognize the ones who are dealers and milling about looking for their next mark. I've fallen victim to it a couple of times myself, but after being to so many shows in my area, I know most of the guys behind the tables by sight at least.

Yes. 625-10 cracked frame. I traded for it privately, but my LGS is a significant S&W dealer, and he sent it back
to S&W. I don't remember the time, but it couldn't have been very long. The 625 was already history, so they said pick anything from the catalog. I probably should have had them put the cylinder and barrel on something, but I didn't. I took a 1917 reproduction (22-4) in nickel from the dealer's stock, because that looked more interesting to me than anything else, including PC, in the current catalog.

Not a 625-10, but still more interesting to me than what I traded for the 625-10.

Actually got the gun back today. Just a little over 3 months but, Oh well. Gun shoots wonderful, but is REALLY tight. A few thousand rounds should fix that.
