I work in a Pawn Shop and carry a 3rd gen most of the time, Normally it's ether my 5943 or my early pre rail TSW 4013 every day. Carry both in a Don Hume level 2 duty holster. Will carry my 1066 on occasion also as well as several other 3rd gens I own but the 5943 is the day to day workhorse. With the alloy frame my 5943 is as light as a Glock shoots accurately and is dead nuts reliable. It's the pistol I want on my side if it ever hit the fan in the shop and I have to trust something with my life!!

Recently purchased a S&W 4054. As soon as I fire enough rounds to be comfortable it will be my carry (unless I need something smaller depending on clothing).

Bought my 3953 new in 1991, and other then a short period of carrying my Glock 30 (late 1990's), it is still my primary carry weapon, with my 642 as BUG or when I need to pocket carry only.

I've tried a couple dozen different carry guns over the years (semis + revolvers, 9mm, 45acp, 357, one 45 colt) and my current rotation consists of three 9mm double stacks, all 3rd gen Smiths. Not counting the 5906 in my car. Considering the pile of mags I have, it'll likely be too hard to change to something else, not that I feel I need to.

For CCW I have carried only two handguns... so far. My first was a S&W 640-1. Carried it for years. Several years ago I decided to upgrade to a semi-auto CCW piece. Looked at Glocks and the relatively new, at the time, M&P. I settled on a used 6946 for $300 OTD. It has a light and smooth DAO trigger that reminds me so much of that on my 640-1. No safety to fumble and 12+1 capacity stoked with 147 gr Winchester Ranger T loads, just big enough and heavy enough to let me know that it is there.

I'm still partial to my 2 1/2" Model 66 and 2 1/2" 686+ in the cooler months, but during the warm seasons here in eastern NC, I carry a 6906. Handguns are like trucks, it's the condition that matters, not the age, and saying a 3rd Gen S&W is past its prime just because it is old is ridiculous.

I figured I'd post a picture here of my 3913 LS now that I got it after the 10 day wait.

We need more 3rd Gen pictures anyway.

Third Gen pictures always deserve a "like".

Did that 469 come with the single side safety or did you modify it?

My wife and my carry guns are 3953's with 6946's as backup. I used a 5943 yesterday for the shoot portion of the South Carolina CCW class. Mine had no malfunctions with a good grouping. Others on the line had terrible groups and/or malfunctions; many for one person. I don't know how or why you'd carry a gun that had 5-7 malfunctions out of a 50 round course of fire. Our 3rd gens are totally reliable for us so far. Also saw really small/light guns that that had terrible groups, even at 3 yds. Either the owners couldn't shoot or these guns are lousy for CCW if you actually have to shoot them.

I bought the gun used about 35 years ago. It came just as it is now.

Out of several pistols and revolvers from several manufacturers, I find myself carrying my 6906 most of all. It's sitting right here next to me as I type this.

I don't even own a 3rd Gen. gun! I carry a 2nd.Gen., either my 659 or 645. I totally despise those small cut-down handguns as I have very large hands and have trouble holding the tiny 3rd Gens. To me, the bigger the better.

I carry a 1st Generation model 39-2 on occasion. Functions reliably and is very slim, carries very comfortable. I love the gun, and it still sees time in my carry rotation.

BB57,
Why is carrying the 6906 better for you during the warm season? I'm considering getting a 3913NL, that's why I ask.

I currently carry a S&W 5906. If I run out of ammo it will make a handy club.

I carry a 3rd Gen Smith every day. I rotate my 3914 and my 908, depending on my mood.

HA!!! I acquired all of my 3rd gens except one specifically to carry. My first one was a CS-45; I don't carry it much any more because I carry a recently acquired CS-9 instead, or a M 6906. I don't even keep those two in my big gun safe. They are locked in a little bedroom closet safe with my 2" customized Model 64 and my M 642. That is my general carry battalion - depending on certain situations and clothing one of those 4 guns is always with me. The CS-45 I might carry but I generally leave it in the safe.

The sole exception is the NIB Model 5903 SSV. My only true safe queen, new and unfired, and when the price is right I will probably sell it.

Someone above said we need more 3rd Gen pictures........

All of my 3rd Gens are set up to be carried, except the 5906 and 6906. I have carried the 6906 on occasion, but the single stack 9mm guns are more comfortable. Even the 457 does carry duty.

I'm in the same boat. If I could carry, I'd buy a 3953 tomorrow.

Do a lot of you carry old 3 gen guns? Are they still reliable?

Or are they past their prime?

Do the 3rd gens mostly live in the safe with range trips now and then?

Now days has the carry job been taken over by Shields and M&P 9c etc?
3rd gen firearms are fantastic and designed to be used and carried. Past their prime?????? using that logic 1911 would have been dead many, many times over!!! Some might argue that neither are "past their prime"

Hey BamBam bring that PC Shorty 9 out to my house on the 23rd to shoot a bit before we go up to the NE Ohio get together! email me for directions.

You can shoot the custom carry 4516, the 547, and 1013 in comparison.

The Black Pearl, melted and Melonited, silky smooth action, Big Dot Trigicon combat sights.

Perhaps the finest carry gun on the Planet. Four months in the making and at least 100 hours of painstaking craftsmanship went into this 4516-1. It doesn't get any better than this.

PM's are too much hassle to deal with, life is too short. Just send me an email if you want a private conversation. it's listed on my profile:

[email protected]

What time does the NE meet start? And ends early? Anyway I'd like to go to meet some of our fellows. How about a W. PA chapter, there are a few members in the 'Burgh I would imagine.

I'd like to hook up with you sometime just to fondle (and shoot) your PC9! I'd like to give your 66 a spin as well. Compare triggers with my 547's which is long and heavy, but smo0oth.

Not that I wouldn't press one of my too-few 3rd gens into whatever service was required. But I'd sooner accumulate holster wear and tear on an equally reliable, current production and easily replaceable firearm.

Come on Bam! It's either Aston Martin or Austin Powers! You know that!

And what the Hell's wrong with a Yugo?

Default Carry Whatever you like .. Just shoot it well ...

Go for what shoots best for you, and what you would trust your life on it working 100% of the time.

After all it's proficiency and a personal preference, in that order.

I recently picked up a 4563 TSW. If I could find some leather I would certainly carry it. Shooting it, I was pleasantly surprised as to its shooting characteristics. I had read online about people not liking the recoil of the aluminum framed .45s, but even with hot 230 grain Blazer ball and 230 grain Gold Dots, I found it to be quite manageable, with shot-to-shot times reasonable.

If I can find a holster that is comfortable and concealable, this guy is definitely going to get carried.

IIRC the rail can be removed by drilling the rivets...... should fit a 4566 holster.

You guys with your new-fangled 3rd Gens!

I prefer the understated elegance of the 1st Gen. I carry this 39 dash-nada quite a bit.

Yes. Great gun. The leather holster for the Sig 226R fits mine perfectly.

Update: It's the Gould and Goodrich B803, and is marked for the 229, not the 226. Although I've been told that it will fit either.

John, is the Upper Limit holster molded specifically for the angled dust cover that the NL/LS have?

Purchased a 457 with 3 mags for $350 a few years ago. i was carrying a XDs45 which i couldn't warm up to. The 457 is carried daily (unless Im wearing gym shorts - thens its the Sig p238). The 457 shoots great with any ammo - great decision.

They will make it for either the "standard" or the NL/LS model.
But yes, the holster I have is specific to the angled dust cover.

I still feel very comfortable carrying my 457 set up the same as the Black Pearl with Big Dot night sights. The second is in case something breaks on my primary.
