Gun Show Find: Need an education: 1076
I know enough about S&W revolvers to be dangerous. I know nothing about S&W semi auto's. I made an impulse buy today at the Raleigh, NC gun show. There were very few revolvers and I've heard that 10MM is starting to become popular.
The gun is not pristine, it has been used and has some blemishes on the slide. That said, I paid $700 OTD for it. It has one mag and came in a 1076 box. The box has a sticker over the original sticker. (It was in better shape when I got it as I tried to carefully peel it off, but quickly saw that this would not work.) The over sticker has the correct serial number. The original sticker seems to have a different serial number, so I assume that the box is not original to the gun.
I apologize in advance for the phone photos. I do not have my light box set up.
I would like to know about the gun and to gather opinions as to its actual value.
Thanks in advance.
Bill
First the label on the box.

Boy does that bring back fond memories of all-steel, built-like-a-tank, American Made pistols. That's the "FBI Model", born out of the aftermath of the notorious 1986 FBI Miami Gunfight.
It's biggest drawback was it's hefty weight which was HEAVY when worn by the typical agent in a suit on a flimsy dress belt.
That said, when open-carried in a uniform duty holster on a proper gun belt it was an outstanding "duty pistol". When cleaned and lubed it runs best on full-power 10mm loads.
The potent 10mms led to qualification issues for the masses, which led to a downloaded 10mm cartridge, which led to functioning issues, which all contributed to the birth of the .40SW, and the rest as they say, is history.
Then some guy named Gaston came along and gave us all a swift kick in the jewels. LOL

Make sure your pistol has two punch marks under the decocking lever (when lever is actuated) indicating recall service.

Thanks, they are present so I assume it had the service.

I think you have good instincts.
And I'm jealous. Congratulations.

1006s are priced in the $1000 range, that has to be worth as much considering the scarcity. Yes they are less in the book, but find one and argue the price. Glass bead it and enjoy, you made a good deal in my opinion.

Ship Date for this gun
I asked Mr. Jinks for a ship date yesterday and he replied today, saying:
"Bill, Model 1076 serial TEP7961 was originally shipped in February 1991. It is an interesting gun that has been around, but not an FBI gun. Hope that this helps. Roy"
I guess that means I will request a letter on this one.

First: I heartily welcome an SWCA brother into the folds that are autoloading pistols;
Second: Perhaps in a touch of irony vis-a-vis you, earlier this year and when not at all looking for a wheel gun yet in the absence of decent semi-loader availability at an auction, I acquired a 99% 5-screw, mirror blue, .45 Long Colt. A real beauty and priced quite nicely @ $800 OTD, its acquisition then fueling a fire not unlike that which previously fueled my semi collection start (and, your now having a 1076, such may happen to you with respect to semi-autos);
Three: Talk of your Model 1076 sent me to my semi-auto safe for a visit with my 1076, which I'd not pulled from its box and fondled in awhile. Found my 1006 but couldn't find my 1076. Three-hours later, I decided I must've "miss-filed" it (I recently moved my office) and, lo' and behold, there it was - two boxes away from where it should've been.
In a manner not unlike being glad, not terribly angry, to see a child who arrived home well after curfew, I hugged it.
This is getting waaaaay too kinky.
Later.
