Are 3rd Gen values really this high?
Yesterday was at a local Field & Stream and saw a fairly pristine 4046 for $953.00!
That seems a tad excessive to me but what do I know?
I have zero interest in this gun and no affiliation with the owner It just struck me as something odd enough to share.
If anyone wants information about where the gun is located I am happy to respond via private message.

Like I say when I hear the asking price of a neighbor's house for sale: "I hope they get every dime . . . "

I don't know about the value, but the price is pretty high.

Some stores and individuals will attempt to take advantage of younger collectors by highly inflating prices on any models that are no longer made. This creates a false sense of value on guns that were hard to sell at MSRP back in the day and many were sold at cost just to move inventory.

I so see incredible asking prices from time to time on various guns and that's a prime example. I think that gun is better priced around $350 as it's not a popular variant. I have only these three...

Seems prices at places like Cabelas, Gander Mountain, or Field and Stream are always a "tad high" or should I say "super rip-off"

Not only is the price high, but I suspect the person who determined how much to ask was high as well.
Run of the mill DAO .40 caliber 3rd Gen. ANIB would be maybe, $500.00. On a good day. Provided someone just had to have it.

I even asked the guy why it was so high and he said "We go off of Blue Book values". I don't own a current Blue Book but I can only imagine they misread the book!

It's only worth what someone is willing to pay. Maybe after a year, he will realize his mistake, & adjust his price if he really wants to sell it. Where I work, a recently purchased pre owned gun gets a high price, because we expect people to haggle with us. Believe me, if we had a nice 3913 priced at $200, people would still haggle for a better deal. But if a pre owned gun sits for a while, the price does go down. Eventually if it's still there after 6 months, we will sell it to a wholesaler for our cost. but the wholesaler is buying all the slow movers, maybe 20 at a time. So what people ask for an item is in no way indicative of what they are worth, or sell for. GARY

Quite right Gary! If $953 was the going price for all Third Gens. TTSH would be a wealthy man indeed!

From your keyboard to God's in-box!!!
I actually own a Model 4046, one of my two very first 3rd Gens (I bought them together, same dealer, same day). That hefty 4046 makes a super-great boat anchor!
I paid $300 plus sales tax way back then. It's in okay condition, not horrible but nothing great. It wouldn't meet the TTSH Standard for acceptable cosmetic condition today but back then I was glad to get it!

Maybe it comes with 3 magazines and 2 extra guns to put them in.

As for the third gens.
Around here it appears to me that the ten mils will bring pretty good money if they are clean, and even more so if you have spare mags. But the 45s, 40s, and nine mils not so much.
You can maybe get six bills for a super clean 4506, 4566, or 4516. But we generally do not see the 40s or nines bring over five bills around here.

Try reading your Blue Book in the mirror and it all starts to make sense.
I happen to like .40's and I happen to like DAO's, and I especially like DAO .40's in heavy, solid stainless pistols, but I have never paid more than $250 for a 4046 and I think I pay more than anyone else around here,..........because nobody else likes any of those things.

Must be like the Toyota trucks for sale around here. Blue book be darned. They can ask about whatever they want for them and seems like someone is usually willing to overpay.
It's what I like to refer to as the "there's a sucker born every day" price.

A 4046 for $953.88?
Only if they can produce a picture of Jesse James personally presenting it to Lee Harvey Oswald!

This 645 wound up selling for $1450 - appears that it was NIB/new-old-stock condition. Never underestimate the power of auction houses to separate bidders from their money ...
Edited to add: It absolutely did sell - I understand the seller received $1315 after the FFL took out 10% ...

I think I'll go to Field and Stream to buy that pistol as soon as I'm out of this straight jacket and padded cell.

Okay for you wise guy! Just wait until I talk with Mrs. GaryS and tell her how much you spent on that pre-rail 3953TSW!

True, but also... Never underestimate the mega-premiums folks with money are willing to pay for " untouched-by-human-hands-in-original-factory-box"! That could be part of what we are seeing with that Model 4046.

Let the record show that I will sell my slightly used Model 4046 to any member of Team 3rd Gen who wants it at half the price quoted above! And I'll throw in an autographed photo of poor old TTSH leaving one of the local guns shops just after GaryS beat me to another 3rd Gen killer deal by 10 minutes.

The D/A only ones do seem to go for less but I see the clean older Smith going up now a days . When I see a good clean 3rd gen I get it . I did let a mint 39 dash 2 nickle go by foe 450 I kick myself for that one . I keep looking for a mint nickle 459 fixed sight . that will be a 600 to 700 gun I bet.

It is always a flame fest around here. Looks fair to me.
I listed a pristine 9mm tsw on this very site for 100 dollars less than I sold it for and got flamed to death. I put it on an auction site and it lasted 2 days.
To say there are a lot of bargain shoppers here would be an understatement.

I think the term "Price aware consumers" might be more accurate.
