Back in the early 2000's I carried a 659 as my first duty weapon and it was a hand me down from my dad (also a police officer). I have always wanted a 5906 but found this by accident and put it on layaway. Before picking it up I researched and found that this may have been a heck of a find. Appears damned near unfired.

Very nice guns with a pretty short production life. I had a 3904 for a couple of years. Great gun, but didn't fill a niche for me. I think the full size single stack nines were killed by the full size double stack nines.

A 3913 carries one round less, but is much more compact and a 6906 carries three rounds more and is still compact. Which doesn't appear to have left much of a market for the 3904/06. Although interestingly enough, S&W did re introduce it as the Value Line 909. but production lasted for only two years.

All of that aside, they are well built, great looking guns.

Being both a fan of the full-size single stack 9's (M39 et al) and a fan of the Value Line guns, a nice condition Model 909 is one that I would snatch up in a heartbeat at anything approaching a fair price. I had a chance to do so at a Sturbridge show back in 2015, but I hesitated due to price, one mag and no box. It was gone by the next show. Major regrets on that one.

At one point I had a pristine in-the-box 3904, a 909 in the same condition and a 3906 in near new condition SANS the original box.

Part of my collection reset was elimination of the 3904 and 909 - I still have the 3906 and will likely keep it.

The 909 was pretty cool - full size alloy, single stack with a round trigger guard.

Don't see many of either of these 3 variations for sale much anymore.

Nice 3906, by the way. They are really fine pistols.

Tsk, tsk, tsk. You know that here in the PRM you have to swallow your pride and open your wallet when a rare (which seems to be most of them) 3rd Gen model comes along.

Even Mrs. TTSH knows that!

That very nice Model 909 was not a "wife pre-approval required" gun at just $425+Tx. Terry Goode had it at one of the Sturbridge shows and I figured that if it didn't sell at the show, I could get it later at his shop for a few bucks less. Well, it didn't sell at the show but it apparently sold at his shop shortly thereafter. Opportunity blown and a fine gun lost.

Default Just acquired this 3906 from my LGS for ~$500. Looks like someone's safe queen.

As I sit here and admire this little gem I couldn't help but take note of something. As I am also a 1911 admirer I couldn't help but compare measurements. Not that this 3906 is going into my carry rotation but for me and what/how I carry it seems to be an ideal setup.

They really are the best.
With that serial number, your 3906 may still have pre-recall grips. If your grips have no dimple on the bottom, S&W owes you updated grips if they have them in stock.

Don't be too surprised if they no longer have replacement grips. The recall is over 25 years old and they have run out of grips for some models.

That's awesome. I love the feel of the all-steel guns. Alloy is nice... but steel just feels like something special in your hand. And you got a great deal... there's been one of those floating around on GB for a while; the guy is asking, like, over $1000.

Maybe someone addressed it above... but...

What's with the little dimple on the front of the extractor?

The feed ramp looks a little rough so I might have tried getting it for $350.
Just kidding! Don't shoot me!
It definitely looks like it was a safe queen.

Both my 3904 and 3906 have that - possibly indicative of a revision.

I won't be surprised at all. I have found a few on eBay etc. One thing that did surprise me is Smith still stocks the magazines in their store as well as both Midway and Brownells.

Just got off the phone with S&W. Replacement grip is in the mail!

I cant help but wonder with 3d printing and cnc machines they periodically spit out a few parts for the older guns or if it is just new old stock. As a side note- looking at midway usa they have just about everything (quoting Larry Potterfield) for the 3906 from firing pin to complete slide - slide is a special order item as are some other parts like decocker etc...

It would be my guess that the slide and every single piece of the top end of a 5906 would be -EXACTLY- the same as a similar vintage 5906 or stainless full-size 9mm of any 3rd Gen model. Barrel, firing pin, decocker, you name it. Only the frame parts should be different.

My opinion, please check for accuracy before spending money based on this post.

You lucked out. Like a big wheel of chance, sometimes you score with S&W CS, sometimes you lose and sometimes you get seriously goofed on (even worse than just losing).

All three have happened to me... many times. Overall, I'm right about at 1/3 wins, 1/3 losses and 1/3 major goofs! But in regard to early 3rd Gen recall replacement grips, I'm only about 1 for 7 or so. I've had to buy the rest from MidwayUSA.

I guess I've done pretty well - six of six - five 3906/3904 (2 for the pistols and 3 NOS pre-recalls I got from Ebay) and one 3913LS (black for grey).

Not sure if I was clear. All of my beloved 3rd Gens that aren't wearing Hogues are wearing post-recall S&W wrap-around grips... but I was only able to obtain one good post-recall pair out of the mothership under the old recall for 7 tries. For the last two older 3rd Gens I bought, I didn't even try. I went right to MidwayUSA.

Once they sent me an incorrect (and badly "used & abused") 3rd Gen grip for the wrong frame size. And guess what? It wasn't even post-recall. It was a pre-recall grip... and it even had a crack in it where it must have been dropped. That's what I mean when I say that S&W CS sometimes decides to do a big goof on me.

But in fairness, they have been good to me too at times. Like I said, overall I'm probably about even between successes, failures and silly goofs with S&W CS.

You were - whereas you have had 1 out of 7 pre-recall grips replaced by S&W, I'm lucky to have had 6 out of 6 replaced. Although, they did initially send another used pre-recall grip for the 3913LS. I just sent it back with a polite note (as if speaking to a CS rep who didn't know what a 3913LS was) and they rectified it.

True. I once called CS simply asking if they had a certain sideplate in stock and the lady said she would put one in the mail for me - I didn't really even need it.

Yep. Once I called inquiring about the availability of certain 3rd Gen magazine springs and the next thing you know, they sent me a half dozen for free. Similar things have happened on other parts.

On the other hand, they made me pay bigtime for a single screw to fit dear old Dad's Model 28 while he was still alive and they still won't send me a couple new style Shield .45 followers so I can sell the damn gun without having to worry about the buyer screaming DEFECTIVE and wanting his or her money back. I even offered to pay for them but no dice. Go figure.

But the biggest disappointment has been with respect to the 3rd Gen grip recall. One usable post-recall grip for 7 requests (for 7 separate guns over 4 years) is not good. Easier now and less discouraging just to pay MidwayUSA and be done with it.

Hello Steve, That thing looks like new! I've been a fan of the single stack S&W 9s since the '60s, and must have owned a dozen or so. I bought a new adjustable sighted 3906 like yours when they first came out. A heavy duty, and heavy, 100% reliable pistol. I'm sure I must have traded it off on some shiny, long forgotten, trinket of some kind. I've regretted it since. The only examples I've ever come across were well used beaters. If I'd come across one as clean as yours, I'd probably have injured myself trying to rip the wallet out of my pocket, especially at that price

Man, she is a beauty for sure! The only thing sexier than the condition of the pistol itself is that awesome price! You scored big, buddy!

Beautiful pistol! I carried one for 15 years as a Deputy Sheriff. Shot a few thousand rounds through it in practice ranges. Six months before retirement the department issued me a 5906 which I now own and keep
in my truck when not on my waist.
Love the old steel automatics.

Very nice gun. Is the 3906 a rare find? Can someone please elaborate a bit about the 3906? Thanks!

It's rare enough that if a 3rd Gen aficionado (like myself) stumbled upon one in decent shape and could buy it at a fair price, he or she probably should. It's the last of the full-size 9mm single stacks, not counting the equally rare Value Line Model 909.

Congratulations. That is a really nice gun. Old school cool.

I don't shoot mine much any more but it is a very reliable and accurate pistol. Maybe I got lucky but it is one of the most accurate 3rd gens I own.

They are cool guns that just got pushed aside as the double stacks became the in-thing.

Model 3906. Good things are produced in small numbers.

Howdy all. Got the replacement grip from Smith and Wesson this past Friday. They appear new and correct in fit. Even had that new plastic stank.
