Looking for year of production
I recently acquired 2 Smith Wesson semi auto target pistols. Just wondering how to find out when they were built. Thanks

Welcome to the Forum
Your Model 52 was most likely from 1988. If you have the box, the actual date of manufacture is coded on about 99% of the end labels
If there is no A before the Model 41 serial number, it is most likely from 1969 or 1970

Look for a 4 digit number under the heading "SPEC ORD" on the computer printed end label
99%+ of the time that is the last digit of the year of manufacture. The remaining three digits are the day of manufacture in Julian format

production year
So, with 91 88, year would be 1989, and 188th day?

If the 4 digit number under the heading "SPEC ORD" is 9188, then your Model 52 was manufactured on July 7th of 1989

Welcome to the Forum,
The serial# dates to about 1988 according to the serial# tables in the Standard Catalog of S&W 3rd Edition.

Thank you for the information.
Now i can only wait for it to be released to me from the dealer. Waiting for paperwork to come thru, here the paperwork takes at least 2 months.
