Model 41 barrel question
What is the purpose of the small vertical slit on the left side of the barrel just under the rear of the front sight? Thanks

If you are referring to a 7 3/8" barrel, it's a witness mark for the optional barrel weight set.

barrel question
Yes. 7 inch barrel. Appears to be factory drilled and tapped. Why do some barrels have the witness mark, and others do not?

I believe mostly the earlier made ones came with the slit. Its on my 1958 year gun. It does lineup the weight set.
