My first 3rd gen - 6906
I'm a revolver guy but sometimes get the bug to try something different. For some reason this one called out to me at the gun shop yesterday and I decided to take her home. I don't know much about these but it feels good in the hand and balances well. Also I noticed the stamping on the mags have that RESTRICTED: EXPORT disclaimer and the last part has S/N with a number. Are they suppose to be serialized to the gun?

Yours is very much like the first Smith auto I owned. I did let that one go in favor of another 6906 with round trigger guard but that's just personal preference, the square guarded 6906 shot just fine. I now have quite a number of 1st and 3rd gens with a single 2nd gen 539. Love 'em.
You're hooked now...

You might be right. The more I am handling this one the more I am liking it. I do prefer the square trigger guard. My other 9mm pistols are a Walther PPQ and Springfield XD Subcompact, of which both have the square guard, so the 6906 just feels right.

No, 9/13/94 was the day the Clinton ban went into effect.
Your pistol is early and may still have pre-recall grips. If your grips have no dimple on the bottom, S&W owes you updated grips if they have them in stock.

Thanks jsbethel. I was still in high school at the time and knew of the ban but was too young to purchase a pistol and not aware of everything that happened that year. Also looks like my grip does have the dimple.

Excellent choice. I was overjoyed the day I obtained one and it is my first choice for carry if I feel the need for extra firepower (it happens). My other high capacity pistols are all service sized guns that are simply too large for concealed carry but the 6906 is perfect. Enjoy it!

Very nice! I have certainly enjoyed my 6946. The 3rd generation pistols really are excellent firearms.

You will like it I'm sure. I too had the itch for a 9 but wanted something like my old 59s I had. Got a 6904 for a great price. Much better than the new 9s. Enjoy.

I've had mine so long I forgot when I bought it. Probably 1987 or 88. I've got a lot of different pistols and revolvers, but I carry this one often. I have Hogue wraparound grips and usually use 5906 mags with the adapter on the bottom so it fits flush with the bottom of the grip. It's sitting right here next to me at the moment. Love the way it handles and shoots.

Tom where did you get those adapters for the 5906 mags? Does anyone still offer them? I saw a video online of someone that had them on their 6906 and wouldn't mind having that full size grip.

You can find the grip adapters on GunBroker or eBay. I got mine from robertsontradingpost on GunBroker

I've got a 6906 that I beat the tar out of. It's my wood cutting, lawn mowing, cord building pistol . I use that old standby Federal 9BPLE 115 gr +P+.

The "Grip Plus 2" is made by Precision Gun Specialties - just download the order form from their website.

When I checked a few months ago, they were long gone.
