Hi, I have a chance to buy a Smith and Wesson model 422 at a local store for around $270. The price seems good but the finish isn't the greatest, seems marked up a bit. Any thoughts on this gun? Anyone have one?

I have one with a 6in. barrel and love it. I'm not sure about the asking price, but if you buy one in good working order, I believe you will enjoy it.

I had a Model 422 with 6" barrel that I won in a USPSA competition. It was a very nice gun; accurate, and fun to shoot. I really don't remember how I ended up selling or trading it. Anyway, the price you've listed doesn't sound too bad. Is it negotiable? I would try to get it for less if possible.

The finish wasn't that great when the gun was new. It was slightly more durable than carbide lamp smoke. Lots of sharp edges on that design. Stuff that pistol into a holster a few times and the finish wears off.

Prices vary greatly on that series, the 2213/2214 pocket pistols and all stainless 2206 bring the most money. FIST was the only holster company I ever found that had molds for this model. Firing pins tend to break if the guns are dry fired much. The model was discontinued twenty years ago.

You will be pushing $300.00 by the time you pay tax. That money might be better spent on a new or newer gun still in production with greater factory support.

I just recently acquired one myself. It's the six (6) inch target model with wooden grips. It's in mint condition. However, I haven't fired it as yet. When I finally get it to the range, I'll post a report on how well it shoots.

Great series of rimfire pistols and uses readily available Model 41 magazines. I have a 622, 422, and 2206 and I will snatch up another one if I get the chance.

I'd love to replace my foolishly sold off 2206TGT. This group of guns are the sweetest shooters. I'd sell or trade my tricked out Ruger Mklll 22/45 for a chance to get another one or even a 422 or a 622. Yes, they are that good.

For that price its a steal if it still shoots good. They are a great series of handguns for the price. You will not regret buying it.

I love them, and have two 4 inch 422s and two 6 inch 622s. The six inch 622 is a special favorite because the sights on the fixed sight version. It has a fine black vertical line on the front sight, makes it very easy to shoot well and the fixed sights are dead on.

If you ever entertain a new shooter, especially a female or a kid, they will love it. Very light, nice trigger, and easy to shoot well. My niece wants me to find her one of her own.

Great gun. You won't regret it.

The price is high for a banged up gun, IMO.

The finish issues are typical, as indicated it isn't very durable.

Is there a magazine with the gun? Orange follower or black follower? Orange is a 12 round mag and is more desirable and adds to the overall value of the package. What condition are the grips in? Nice wood grips seem to bring a premium these days as well.

I'd offer them $250 OTD...

The grips are nice, not sure about which mag it has. I haven't made it back to check it out yet. The finish bothers me. It's like its banged up on the corners of the barrel.

I've had two 422s. Both were good shooters. Iffn' I find another one, it will be mine!

Showing a little wear on the forward corners of the frame is less of a concern if you have intentions to shoot it. Honest wear includes the evidence of these areas receiving a few dings. Honestly the 422's black finish on the aluminum wears faster than one might expect. My 2214 is already showing wear after a year of only a little holster and range use. It was in safe queen condition when I bought it.. no finish wear and very little evidence of anyone actually putting rounds through it. I put rounds through it now every trip to the range. Yes the finish on these guns is delicate but the guns them selves are solid, and great shooters.

I like the 422 because of the muzzle nut. I machined a replacement nut but made an extension on it so I can thread my .22 Cal. suppressor on the new muzzle nut. Works super as a suppressed pistol.

I had a couple 422's and a 622 back in the 90's when you could get them for under $200 anywhere. I sold them in lean times though. Anytime I see them at gun shows now, you hear the dreaded line, "They don't make them anymore", and see a price closer to $500. I never see one in a local shop.
They were far more comfortable to shoot then the 22a models and very reliable. We shot everything from good CCI to Win. Wildcats and never had problems.
I understand S&W doesn't support them anymore with parts or service, but there were enough around that you should be able to keep it running for a lifetime.
I'd get the one you are looking at, the price isn't bad and it's a very nice pistol.

I have one and enjoy it.. It hangs up when dirty, but it is a breeze to clean. Pretty accurate too.

Mine get's shot mostly by my daughter & her friends that come over, who have never shot a gun.. It's a great gun to start someone out on ! It looks cool and has absolutely no recoil..

If you get it, make sure the rear sight stays tight.. They were known to come flying off & disappear forever

I don't mean to hijack this thread, but this seems to be in the same area as the OP. A 6 in. M.622 has just come up for sale locally here. I have only seen pictures yet, but it's described as nearly new, in excellent shape, in the original box w/owner's manual. From the pic it appears to have the fixed sights. The price is $400. I wrote to the seller to ask a few questions, and to see if his price was negotiable at all. I haven't heard back yet.

I have a M.2206, and a 4 & 6 in. M.422, so I'd really like to get a M.622. This is the first one I've seen in *ages*, and it even has a box! So...what do you guys think? Assuming it is actually in excellent condition, is $400 out of line, or acceptable? I'd love to get it for $350, but I doubt that'll happen...so I'd be reasonably content to get it for $375. Am I being silly squabbling over $25...or should I just keep "enjoying the search", and keep looking?

Nice 622's with the box seem to be getting a premium lately on GB, I think the seller is in the right range from what I've seen.

Thanks for the info! I had looked at GB, and I saw plenty of high *asking* prices...but I can't seem to see the completed sales, so I've no idea what they're actually selling for.

I haven't heard back from the seller yet. Perhaps he's already sold it!
