Default Broke my 457

Today I was shooting my 457 and after 4 mags it just went click when I pulled the trigger. I ejected the live round 3 times and there was no firing pin strike on the primer. Here is what its doing, engaging the decocker will not drop the hammer, I can pull the trigger with mag removed, I can pull trigger with decocker on safe. I was shooting Federal FMJ ammo at the time, did not notice anything strange after the last time it did fire.

any help please

First, clean it.
Might just be a buildup of crud in the firing pin channel

Next, inspect the pin & spring.
One of those would be the next issue.

While you are at it, clean & inspect the whole thing,
It's a 30+ year old gun, probably needs all springs
replaced, and a really good cleaning.

Heh, looks like we ran the same circles...
for only truly insane people run into burning buildings,
and spent time as a Gov't Ordained Green Monster

My thought was maybe the firing pin safety lever and/or sear release lever were broken. Or maybe one of the springs for those. Those spring are called ejector springs, but there are two and one seems (from the diagram I have) to press down on the firing pin safety, sear release lever, and ejector. That's just a guess, though.

OP, when you say you can pull the trigger with the magazine removed or with the decocker engaged, does that mean that the hammer cycles?

FWIW, I wasn't a fire fighter, but have a couple of awards for running into burning buildings.

It happens rarely, but the barrel of the safety may have broken.

A really good detail strip of the slide and a cleaning might reveal broken parts. Spring changes might be in order, but if you're not experienced with the 3rd generation guns and/or mechanically handy, you might want to hand this off to someone who is.

Before you do that, field strip the gun and function check the various frame levers. If you press the ejector down flush with the frame top, the trigger should disconnect from the hammer. If the hammer is cocked and the decocking lever is depressed, the hammer should drop. When the trigger is pulled, the safety plunger lever should move upward.

Now with the slide assembly upside down, safety off and the barrel removed, depress the safety plunger and hold it in the down position. With a pin punch, push the firing pin forward. It should stick out of the breech face about 1/16 of an inch and retract when you release the firing pin.

Brownells may have parts, check the Kuhnhausen books to see if they're got one on the S&W semis.

Numrich/Gun Parts Inc & Midway also have parts.

THE SIDEPLATE THAT HOLDS THE SEAR AND HAMMER PINS ARE NO LONGER AVAILABLE. BE VERY, VERY CAREFUL WITH IT.

On Youtube search for "Smith & Wesson Third Generation". There are a number of disassembly/reassembly videos there.

Ebay has 3rd Gen parts, new and used. I think that any .45 sideplate will fit, but I'm not 100% sure.

Any idea what the round count on your 457 was? Did you get it new or used? Thanks! And good luck getting it running again!

Most 4513TSW and 4516 parts will also work in your 457. Regards 18DAI

Gun was a trade for a m-39 that I had and did not want to shoot, would be better with a collector. I have had it about 2 years and have maybe 500 rounds thru it, it looked 100% when I got it , no ware at all.

Default update on broke 457

Broke down my 457 following you tube videos, was not that bad.

Could not find anything broken but the plastic disconnector assembly looked vary worn. Ordered one ( stainless steel) and a few other small parts from Numrich. Put in new desconnector and put it back together and now every thing works like it should. The hook end of the disconnector looked to be about 1/8 inch shorter than the new one. Thanks for all the help.
