Default 3rd Gen Auto newbie 4013

I've been wanting a 3rd gen auto since I saw Jerry Miculek's 5906 video on YouTube. I finally took the plunge and made myself the proud owner of a two tone 4013. I know .40 isn't the in round now, but I like having the option of doing a 10mm conversion. Anyone happen to know much about these? I'll most likely get a letter sometime because I'm curious. I've seen another forum post that these were a Lew Horton run for the Colorado State Patrol, but this one obviously isn't marked.

Nothin' wrong with a .40 in my mind.

Interesting find! If you think it might be a Lew Horton send them an email (to "[email protected]") with the SN# & ask them. Earl, at LH, is very nice & will get back to you promptly with an answer. If it is one of their's he'll send you a letter (pdf attachment) with details if you include your mailing address too.

Mine's just a "regular" one but it was in great shape when I got it. If I find a second one it'll convert it too, but not this one.

Congrats!

I'd rather rather have the 9 but if I ran across a deal on the 40 version I would not let that stop me. Nice gun.

Thanks for the warm welcome gents. I have to say that I really love this gun. The DA is really sweet. I had seen reviews that said these aren't very accurate. If I decock every shot, I can get about 1" groups at 7 yards. Granted that isn't practical, but I'll take it to mean it's a good shooter. I'm not crazy about the SA, but I do love the reset on it. I need to swing it by a gunsmith to have the feed ramp and chamber polished, I had a few nose up failures to feed with 180 grain Federal flat nose. If I need to change out the mag spring, which I think might help, where can I get those? I've seen some online, but it doesn't say if they're for the 8 round or the 9 round mag, are they interchangeable? Thanks in advance.

I prefer 9's, I've got a great SW99 and a sweet custom Beretta 92G Brigadier, but I've been wanting a 40 so that when ammo dries up from time to time, I can still find some.

Not only that I have a "Smith" in 9 already and one in 45 (1911SC), so I wanted a trifecta.

I probably paid more for this one that I should have, but I really wanted it.

I really doubt it's necessary for a gunsmith to polish them. You should be able to clean/shine them up yourself with little effort & have good feeding. 3rd Gen routinely feed empty cases off the magazine without issues. I would suspect the magazine spring before a ramp issue.

No, the dual stack (9) round mag springs (4013TSW) are not the same as the single stack (8) round springs (4013 non-TSW). If it doesn't say I wouldn't buy them. The dual stacks are more common.

Wolff Gunsprings makes an extra power replacement that I'd recommend:

S&W 4013/4053 +10% XP MAGAZINE SPRING Pak of 3

"Wolff 4013 Magazine Springs" link

It looks like you reload. I don't have the skill or the time to do that. However I am curious as to what you feed yours. I tried Federal 155, 165, and 180 grain JHP and it seemed to like all three. I took your advice and ordered the 3 pack of Wolff magazine springs since I have exactly 3 mags and an extractor spring (brass was flying everywhere). I read that Sprinco sells the dual nested recoil springs, but the ones I have seem fine so far. The only other things I want to get for it are a holster, spare mag carrier, and night sights. Any other recommendations?

I would suggest a disconnector since they are usually polimer

How do you like the Hogue grips? I've been thinking about ordering a set for my 4013.

Nice gun as it is in 40. And cooler with the 10mm conversion option.

I put the same Hogue grips on my Model 411. I still have the original grips of course. I prefer the Hogues. Definitely thicker (which works for me on this pistol), and nice and grippy. I didn't have any significant issue with the original grips, but thought I'd try the Hogue's - glad I did.

EDIT Edit to add: I sometimes got a slippery grip in high heat and after numerous rounds with the original grips; I don't experience the same with the Hogues.

I like them. The only 3rd Gen I've put the rubber Hogue's on & didn't like (& removed) was my 4006.

Another plus on the Hogues is they add a mainspring seat that stays on the frame so you can remove the Hogue grips and not have to remove the mainspring, unlike the factory grips.

Welcome to the Forum and Congratulations on a interesting find

I too am a fan of the 10MM Auto cartridge and have already converted a 4014 into a 1014.

I now have a 4013 on the way, it will be converted after I settle in the new house.

I did not realize I would need to look for a two tone to have a complete set

That's a great looking pistol you've got there. What sights are those? They look a bit different than the ones I've got on mine. One thing that I really like about my 4013 is that it's a decock only.

I have 4013 that is converted to 10mm. I plan to have some work done on it that includes Meloniting the slide and barrel that will give me the same two-tone look as yours.

That's nice. I'm really liking it. I didn't realize these 4013's were so difficult to find. I saw another one of your posts on another thread about your 3914NL. Did you have Teddy Jacobson work on it yourself or did you buy it like that? I think I'd like to send him my pistol as the single action is a little creepy. This is assuming he's still up and running after Harvey.

The 4013 uses a metal disconnector part #104210000. The polymer disconnector used in the value and CS pistols is part #239070000.

You shouldn't need to replace it.

I know it is not the same but I got a model 4006 in .40, these 3rd gen S&W's are amazing guns. I think I will be looking out for more. I also like .40, it seems like a 'red-headed stepchild' round when I ask for it at the gun shops but I honestly enjoy it more than 9mm at the range.

I bought the 3913NL from a member here who had Teddy Jackson do an action job on it. After I got it I had BMCM restore the slide and re-crown the barrel and polish the feed ramp.

Does anyone happen to know what happened to the Lew Horton website? I can't find it with Google anymore. I tried contacting them about tracking down my serial number and it got bounced back as though it was spam. It's starting to look like I'll need to suck it up and get a S&W letter.

That's what I thought. I'll have to try and find him or I suppose I'll have to send it to Chestnut Mountain. Cylinder and Slide is over a year waitlist to have work done.

Right. I know where to find that info. His shop is or was in Sugar Land, TX, which was hit pretty hard by Hurricane Harvey. Hence why I was wondering if anyone had more info.

I finally completely stripped my frame down for cleaning using the excellent 3rd Gen videos on YouTube. It turns out my 4013 does have the polymer disconnector. Numrich shows an older model black metal one with two nubs instead of wings. Will that one work? I've also seen stainless ones, but they're not on Numrich's schematic parts list for the single stack.

It also looks as though my drawbar plunger shifts up and hits against the frame during SA pulls. Doesn't seem to affect function. Is this normal?

Nice gun. Don't let the LE trend towards 9mm disuade you, although not a target caliber, 40 is a fine caliber & well suited for combat purposes.
