Default 4056tsw value?

I stopped at a LGS and they had a 4056 for sale. I asked to look at it, only interested in passing. Looked to be in great shape. Not sure it includes anything besides the gun and one mag, but they are asking $525 for it. After looking it up it does appear to be a rare model somewhat. Any thoughts on what it might be worth? Can't decide if I'll kick myself if I don't grab it while I can, or not.

The production quantity estimate based on known serial numbers is approximately 1,100, which does make it a rare pistol. I would say in good condition with one mag you are looking around $550-$600 OTD, more if it includes the original box and additional mags.
.
My estimate may be a bit rusty, it is hard to track 4056TSW prices when they so rarely go up for sale.
.
Please let us know if the serial number is beyond MSE1048 - MSE2076.

$525 doesn't seem unreasonable. But being DAO and .40 kinda hurts it's desirability. Seems .40 has fallen out of favor with all the cool kids.

I have only 1 40 cal & I never shoot it. On the plus side of 40 cal the ammo is cheap now.

No original factory box et al is going to hurt if you are looking to buy it for its relative rarity and potential for appreciation in value over time. But that said, $525 is not a whole lot of money for a somewhat rare pre-rail TSW 3rd Gen in "great" shape. $450-$500 with a little wise, judicious haggling sounds even better.

I'd probably try to buy it... provided, of course, that I wasn't risking homelessness, bankruptcy and/or divorce to pull it off.

I've seen a few sell on the auction sites, and they all went for over $600, so I'd say it was a good price. This is not just a rare model, but desirable because it is the only steel-framed compact .40 in the 3rd Gen lineup.

Appreciate the input, but I'm leaning toward passing on this one. Tempted for the sake of it, but I'm more interested in a 3953 I think. Any idea how they would compare, beside the 9mm vs forty. More concerned with width.

If you really don't want it, let us other 3rd Gen aficionados know where it is so one of us other circling vultures can snare it!

Default 4056TSW pr-rail

My 4056TSW was the first DAO pistol I bought & initially thought I wouldn't like it. Boy, was I wrong.

The double action pull is the best of any of my 3rd Gens. The only thing I've done to "tune" it is put a lighter mainspring (Wolff 17#) in it.

For some reason this pistol & I get along well & I can shoot (group) it every bit as well as the Shorty 40 Mk.I, which I recently bought.

It's a solid all stainless steel pistol & at 37oz it definitely carries more weight than it's alloy frame siblings (27oz).

40's are fine with me. Yeah, I'm not one of the cool kids as you can tell, but I'm fine with that.

Nice set there! Is there a big difference in width between the 4056 vs 4013?

Turns out to come with original box and second mag, so I'm going to go ahead and give it a try. Anything to ask about before they ship it, as it is our of state where we were vacationing.

I'm glad to hear you are picking it up, I can't think of anything specific that you would need to ask. The 4056TSW is built like a tank.

Other than the 4056's lack of the ambi levers & it's slightly longer slide (to cover the DAO hammer) they're exactly the same dimensions.

I'd suggest installing new springs (recoil, mainspring, firing pin & magazine) since you have no idea how old it's are. That way you start from a good known.

Hope you like it. Give us a range report later.

Good tip on the springs BLUEDOT37!

Here's a silly question. I sometimes like having the 9mm conversion barrel for my Glock 26 for cheaper practice. Is there any chance of a conversion barrel to convert the 4056 (or any of the 40s&w third gen's) to 9mm?

If the 9mm double stack mag fits properly in the 40 S&W double stack mag's well then I think it might be possible.

You'd have to obtain a complete barrel & slide from a compatible compact 9mm double stack (6946 ?).

I'm sure someone here has already played with this idea so maybe they can chime in & say for sure.

I don't have my 6906 any more or I'd try it with my 4013TSW to see.

Mine should be in hand in a couple days. I would love to find grips like the ones on your 4056. Any suggestion on what they are and we're to find them?

They're Hogue grips, #69000. Midway has them:

"Hogue Wraparound Rubber Grips Finger Grooves S&W 6906 9mm - MPN: 69000"

How should these third gen Smiths be lubed? With most of my other semi's I just use a little ballistol on the rails & barrel, hood and a dab anywhere I find wear. Would that suffice for the 4056?

I guess my only concern is if I really need grease on the rails, or can I just stick with ballistol?

My take on lubrication is that a little lubriplate (grease) can't hurt anything and may save a little wear...but this will make contaminants stick a little more so I don't use it on a gun I'm carrying. I use lubriplate regularly on my autos but that's just me.

I can't say I see any performance differences with grease vs. Ballistol.

I always grease the rails. It doesn't take more than a few seconds and I even keep a small tube with me in my range bag. The larger containers stay at home on the workbench. Wipe any excess off because you really only need a thin film on the bearing surfaces.

Just thought I would post back. Went to the range the other night and it was great. I really like the extra weight with the 40s&w. I shoot my Glock 27 fine, but the 4056 is sweet. It actually fits in my Glock 30 holster well, but I would like to find a nice kydex set up for this.

The only thing that will take some getting used to is the reset on the trigger. I kept short stroking it because there is a distinct click prior to the actual reset that throws me off. I assume that's normal for the 4056.

Sounds the same as mine. You need to back off the DAO trigger until the second click for trigger engagement. TDAs are on the first click.

Glad you're liking it.

I was on the Wolff Springs site, and looking for a service pack plus mag springs for it. However, I don't see the 4056 listed. There are springs for S&W 40xx, anyone know which to buy? I think I know, but thought it would be good to ask before I find out the hard way.

Wolff 20# hammer spring: 26920 (short, type "B")

Wolff Xtra Power firing pin spring: 26108XP

Wolff does not make a magazine spring expressly stated for the (9 rd.) 4056TSW but I have used their extra power (+10%) mag spring for the (11 rd.) 4006 after cutting off one-complete turn, which has worked without any issues. S&W may still offer them.

Wolff does not make the dual/nested recoil spring for it. Either buy the springs from S&W, PN# 108670000 & 108660000 (inner & outer), or an ISMI GLC-20 flat wire recoil spring (that will likely need fitting), or Sprinco's #45162 dual/nested set.

Thanks BLUEDOT37! I contacted s&w. After holding for a minute they are sending me all the springs for the gun and two mags that I needed free of charge. Gotta love s&w service!

Cool! They had sent me some outer recoil springs, at no charge, once when I called too. I didn't want to mention it & have someone expect the same, just in case, but it's still a welcomed surprise.

moresnowdays:

What is the Spec order# (4 digit date code) of your 4056TSW on the box's label? Looks like it's just a few digits away from mine, which didn't come with it's box, so they'd have virtually the same birthday.
