Question 6904 12rd 9mm Thoughts

Hello yall

Interested in getting a small 9mm that I can throw around into glovebox/tackle box.
Really like the fact that it's 12 rds and quite small, albeit thick.
Just need to look into mags as it doesn't have one

Any info, thoughts, opinions, feedback, experience on this model 9mm is Greatly appreciated

Pics example

The 12 round magazines are discontinued and can be somewhat difficult to find. However, you can use the 15 round magazines with an adapter from Precision Gun Specialties.

I would get a cheap Polymer pistol to throw around and get scratched up

Great gun, love mine and its kind of a beater.12rd Mags can be found most of the time on GB for 30-$35. I lucked up and got one for $20 at a gun show last weekend. Mags for 6906 and some others will fit also.

15 and 17 rd S&W full sized 2 and 3rd gen mags fit too. I'd get 17rd MecGar mags if allowed in your state.

But I also second getting a polymer for a beater.

I have a 5906 full sized, and a 6906 compact.

That looks like a nice gun. Get a plastic gun if you are just going to have it in your tackle box. The 6904 is very desirable.

I would echo others by suggesting a Shield or such for the tackle box. I buy new M&P's for my dirty duty guns...the 1st, 2nd and 3rd gens reside on hip, in home or are pulling safe duty.

My 6904 was one of my first 3rd gens and has always been absolutely reliable and trouble free. I converted it to a single sided safety and it's still a gun I'll carry when I want extra rounds available. The 5906 mag with the extension is very handy.

edit: I don't have a problem with honest wear on a gun and actually find it pleasing. But there is a difference in my mind between shooting and holster wear vs. beat up and neglected. Having said that it's your gun and you can feel free to throw that nice 6904 right into that wet tackle box with no worries from me!

Those mag adapters for the 15rd mags work great and are very comfortable to use. They also don't look as ugly as adapters for some other guns.

I'd get a 12rd mag just to have the right mag, and then just get 15rd mags for spares. You have to figure if you need to reload, then you're going to want as many rounds available.

The 6904/06 are one of the most versatile handguns out there. Small and light enough for easy daily carry, big enough to be easy to shoot and actually practice with. Tough enough to take serious use. With the 15rd mags, you can still conceal it (those mag adapters have a rounded back end, and actually help with printing), or use it as a duty gun. They really do stretch into most of the purposes you need a handgun for.

One advantage you have with this over a plastic gun, is you can carry it without a holster if you absolutely had to. Yeah, it 's not a good idea, and I wouldn't choose to do it, but if you had to take it out of your glove box and stuff it in your waistband of coat pocket, you could do it with less risk than a Glock. The plastic guns are great and all, but I'd never carry one, especially without a manual safety, without a holster. With the 6904 you have both a manual safety and a longer, heavier DA pull that minimizes the risk. I don't recommend carrying without a holster, but if need to arm yourself in a pinch, you can safely do it.

I bought a later one (round trigger guard/novak sights) in as new condition earlier this year ......................$260. A bit of a fluke as it was in the middle of the rebates on new S&Ws so LGS sold it cheap.......

However wouldn't expect to pay more than $325-350 in this market......the one in the picture $300.

I wanted a 9 that was like my old 59 I had in the 70s. Got a 6904 with 5 mags for a great price. It's a great gun and works very well. Too nice to just through in a glove box though. Just my opinion of course.

if it fits your hand and you like its ergonomics, i do not think you could go wrong with a 69xx friend. I personally would probably look for a small revolver for a "stay there and wait" gun. No major springs under tension while loaded indefinately, unlike a pistol's magazine. just my two cents friend :-)

I have a 6946, but it does not live in the glove box nor a tackle box, it lives up personal and close to me. Mine has been great, very reliable, accurate enough out to 25 yards.

I've got a 6906 inbound. It's been on my list for ever and one came up on GB with free shipping, 2 mags, and a good price.

Has a police dept. stock number "LCSO" (anyone know what that is....SO=Sheriff Office?) But I don't mind that. Adds a bit of character and probably helped bring price down to $300 (CDI is asking $290 for no mag and $15 shipping).

It'll go well with my 5906, 39-2 and 459.

Thinking of FO sights if I can find them and I'd love to be silly and put on G10 grips but I don't think anyone makes 'em for it. Maybe wood or rubber after I wring it out a bit.

I bought a few of these for our 6946's and they work fine. I would recommend them. Not too bad of a price either.

Also, our 6946's have been completely reliable and fun to shoot. I would not throw mine in a tacklebox...but each to his own.

The OP hasn't been back since he posted this but in the spirit of continuing on....I'll just say that it's a gun, use it for what it was made for. I don't think anyone would care what kind of gun they had that saved their lives!
