Default Model 52 reflex sight mount?

Just asking if there would be much interest in a reflex sight mount for the 52. I have made one for a friend and it turned out nice. It is for the Leupold Deltapoint Pro but I also have designed the topside for the Burris FastFire and its several footprint compatibles.

The mount slips into the slide's dovetail and is secured by tightening five set screws.

If there is sufficient interest I will add those models to the revolver and model 41 mounts I am currently offering in the accessories for sale section of the forum.

Regards,
Phillip

I would definitely be interested for my Burris FastFire. Would you ship to Canada?

They would be around $45 shipped within USA. Price will be firmed up depending on interest which defines the build batch size. They take a fair amount more time than the revolver mounts.

We can ship to Canada. Target cost is around $42 plus shipping. As I recall shipping to Canada is about $10.

NOTE -- I am not selling in this thread, only gauging interest. If interest is high enough they will be offered in the accessories for sale section with firm pricing at that time.

Is there any reason that the 52 sight base would not also fit the first series of S&W 41 5.5" bull bbls?

Is the S&W 41 base shown in your adv set up for the later D&T bbls?

I do not know the answer to your first question. I will try to look into it.

Second question -- yes, the 41 mount in our ad is for factory D&T barrels.

I have been searching for months trying to find a local shop that will do small batch size anodizing at a reasonable cost. Forgeting cost, there seems to be no anodizing shops in my county!

So, sorry no black anodizing at this time.

Neat, you might post this on the Bullseye-L Forum forum as a lot of bulleye shooters shoot 52's Also if this does fit on the older model 41 barrels I would be interested in one.

Thanks for the bullseye forum tip.

A fellow in our club has an old 41 that is not factory tapped. I am going to ask him to bring it to the range today so I can check out mount compatibility with the 52 mount design.

I'd bet there will me much more interest from the Mod 41 shooters, and many only shoot the 22 and don't own a 52, or shoot bullseye with the 41 and a 1911.

I would be interested. But, I'd really like it to be black. I know you said you can't find anyone to anodize it. Maybe some other option?

BTW: have you considered doing a short picatinny rail for some of the smaller red dots like the Burris TRS-25?

Anodized would be nice but it adds a couple of complications. Anodizing adds a coating of up to .002 on the surface. That means you would have to produce two different models as the dovetail dimensions on the anodized version would be thicker otherwise. While anodizing isn't overly expensive, many anodizing shops have a minimum charge and to do just a dozen or even couple dozen bases could increase the cost significantly. Would you be willing to pay double the cost to have a black base over an non-anodized one? Probably not.

Because these bases won't be subjected to adverse conditions, end users could probably paint them black (with proper paint and prep) and have them look good enough.

Any signs of the additional weight added to the slide causing function problems with the M52??

Very well stated.

My "production" batch size is only about 10 units. I have gotten a couple of quotes from shops out of the area. The lowest was $100 minimum and $4 per part. So for a batch of 10 that would add $10.40 per unit not counting transportation costs to and from the shops.

Painting is probably the best option for users wanting black. This paint works well and is available at most auto parts stores:

VHT SP652 Satin Black Epoxy

Of course one needs to mask the sight footprint as well as the dovetail.

Just a quick note to say I will still offer these mounts but have been busy with other mount productions.

Also I discovered a significant fitting difference between "older" and "newer" 52 slides. I need to do a little more design changes and ferret out a couple more slides to try to make sure the mount design will accommodate various vintages of slides.

I will take one. If you wanted to get rich, figure out a way to make M52 mags. That would be a money maker.

That would be well beyond my modest shop's capabilities.

There certainly seems to be sufficient interest in these mounts. When I get caught up I will make some, notify in this thread and move the sales to my mounts for sale in the accessories thread.

Thank you all for supporting this new design.

Is this the same size as any other S&W autos, such as the M&P or possibly the 39 series? If so, the three gun guys and some who shoot tactical courses would very likely make purchases.

I have an avenue for anodizing, and will check, but it will be next week.

The Venom has the same footprint as the Burris FastFire so that will be offered.

Thanks for the interest.

Thumbs up

I would be interested in both 41 and 52-2 mounts. I'm currently sporting a not so petite C-More mounted on a 41.

Default Before you start carving on that irreplaceable slide...

You might want to look for one of the Pachmayr mounts that replaces the right grip panel. It's not beautiful, but it does the trick, and it has the advantage that you're not subjecting that expensive sight to being slammed back and forth every time you squeeze off a shot. The Pachmayr is held on with the right-side grip screws, plus two long pins that replace the trigger pivot pin and another pin. These help distribute the recoil load so you don't risk pounding the grip screw bushings out of the frame. I think that's more of an issue with the alloy frame of the Model 39 and 439 and the heavier recoil of those guns, which the mount also fits, of course. Recoil of a Model 52 is about as mild as a centerfire auto gets, in my opinion. I was given the mount and a cheap red-dot by a friend, an extremely experienced instructor, armorer and gunsmith. I'd been griping about having hit a plateau in my accuracy with the 52. He gave me the setup and told me to put in on and go practice. I argued that the matches I was practicing for were iron-sights only, so there was no point learning to shoot the course with a red-dot. He looked at me and said, "Just do it." So i did, and of course my scores increased dramatically. Then I noticed something else. I was also running the course with a Ruger Mk II 22/45, also a gift from him, with a short bull barrel that roughly approximated the Mod. 52, to save on ammo costs. I couldn't put the red-dot on the Mk II, so I'd continued shooting with the iron sights. Lo and behold, my score with the 22/45, iron sights and all, mirrored the improvement with the 52 and the red-dot. Finally the light came on in my head and I realized that the visual feedback from the red-dot was letting me see the mistakes I was making with the 52 and I was learning how to shoot it, finally. Thanks, Larry! RIP.

I do not know.

It would be great if one could find descriptions, i.e. drawings of all popular handgun sight channels. To date my method has been to go by measurements of the actual handguns.

We make a mount for the 41 that uses 2 of the 4 factory D&T holes. The mount sits forward of the iron sight. So if your 41 is factory tapped go to our ad on this forum.

I'm keeping my eye on the 52 mount. May not need one today but as my sight is changing with age, I may need it later!

Hello: I would be interested in mounts for the 952 and 945 models if you are making any of those.

Should you decide to make a mount for the 52, might it fit the 952?

We are definitely going to be offering mounts for the 52, just need to get caught up a bit.

I have never seen a 952 in the flesh but web photos indicate a quite different rear sight attachment scheme than for the 52.

Here's pictures of my 52-2 and 952-2, and they are different:

Still, the critical thing that I see would be the width and depth of the dovetail. Next time I open my safe, I'll take some measurements. Otherwise, the 952 looks like it has enough clearance to make accommodate the rest of the mount.

Also, it would seem it depends on what - number 952. Here is the 952 I eyeballed on the web with a quite different sight than the 52 or your 952.

ARCHIVE: Model 952 | Smith & Wesson

Interesting - you are correct. I did a search and 952's are a mixed bag. That corresponds to a story I was told that S&W came out with the model to use up old parts. The earlier versions, such as the one you posted, have sights that look to mount like the older Model 41 sights did, which was a "T" slot cut in the slide. The newer ones like mine use the dovetail mount. Live and learn!

I wish someone would write a book detailing all the sights used on various guns over the years -- not likely as it would no doubt enjoy a very small readership!

I finally got caught up with other work and now offer mounts for the model 52.

I hope there is still interest!

Offerings for Burris FastFire and Leupold Deltapoint Pro mounts can be found with our other mount offering in the accessories for sale section of this forum:

I don't want to steal the OP's thread but since it is a year o.d, thought I'd chime in. I am running a FF III on my 52-1 using an EGW mount. The mount replaces the rear sight with no slide modification at all. The cost was around $50 straight from EGW.
To answer a previous question, I can see no difference in operation since I installed the red dot sight.

Default 52

IF you search for the BME mount you will find the same style mount you have made, plus they make them for many more different optics, plus the 952 S&W and of course model 41. $56.00 not a bad price,
