Default M41 Magazines?

I bought a new S&W magazine, supposedly for 422/622/41. Went
shooting this afternoon and the mag would pop out when slide
shut. Even with slide open you can pull it out with fingers. The cut that mag release engages is a lot longer, wraps around the
edge of clip on the new one ( S&W made). I just got home and
have been looking at it and the only thing I can see to do is file
top edge a little for it to lock in. Have I got a bum mag or all the
new ones like this.

Donk52 is correct as pictures are 10,000 words and possibly one of us can spot the problem if there is one.

I was hoping a 41 expert had run into this before. My 41 is pre
lettered SN. Feeds perfect with mags that came with it. The new
clip only difference is plastic follower and the cut for the mag
release. If you keep pressure on bottom of mag it feeds normal.
Original on Left.

When you slide the magazine in you should hear a click as the mag catch on the frame engages the slot in the mag. If it does engage then that would cause your problem and you have a bad mag. I only use the older mags in my 41's. You can find them on ebay.

Jim

edit: Could be the bottom of the mag is hitting the frame or the top of the mag hitting something on top preventing it from fully inserting.

I have 1 of the old metal follower mags that came with the pistol when I bought it (used) and 5 of the newer mags that I bought later they all work but I think the newer ones fit just a bit tighter in the gun. I have heard about people putting the magazines in a machines vice and giving them a squeeze but I am loath to try that. Not sure what to tell you. You might just send it back to S&W and they should send you a new one.

Measure the opening of the cut out itself, then the distance from the top of the magazine lips to the top of the cut out and compare with one that functions properly. If all it needs is 2 minutes of tweaking with a fie then that is easy enough. If the cut out is in the wrong place and not indexing properly, I'd send it back and ask for one from a different lot or a refund.

While I do prefer the metal followers, my 40 year old M41 functions with both the metal and plastic follower types and yours should also.

If you remove the grips you can clearly see the magazine retaining piece locate into the slot in the mag.
This will tell you what is going on and from there, you can figure out how to rectify.

Again I will stress..... these are very simple machines people.
Take some time and get an understanding of how all the bits and pieces work together.
It will be worth it !

Also make sure you wipe all dirt and **** from behind the grips as well.It can get very dirty in then and cause some problems over time. I have at least 10 mags for mine and some of them do act up a wee bit as well.
