Default 639?

found a very good condition 639 at a pawn shop.Square trigger guard and stock wood grips.one mag and no box.He wanted $579 and I got him to $450 but held off for now.Is $450 a good price? My local gun store guy said $400 would be a better price. Is it worth adding to collection or just another smith?TIA

Good condition (depends on who's opinion that is) 639; if no major cosmetic distractions or mechanical function issues $450 is a get it now price.

Just got me a 639 2 months ago. Early round trigger guard, adjustable rear sights, perfect condition..... $379. So your right in the neighboorhood there.I warn you though after shooting revolver so often the 639 is just not a target gun. Different bullet weights will give you different points of impact. A new recoil spring is a must. I could barely hit the target at 15 yards with the old spring. Very nice well built gun but just not equivalent to a Smith revolver.

You make it sound like you haggled the gun down $129 from the asking price and then balked at buying it?

Okay, I realize that everyone believes pawn shops are the scum of the earth but how do you haggle a price and then walk?

Maybe I don't have the story correct.

There are three 639s being offered on GB at this time. Two round guards and one square like the pistol you described. The two round guards have a starting bid of over $700, while the square guard is starting at $500. I'd say you're pawn broker has made you a decent offer.

This is nothing new. I work a few gun shows a month, & this happens 50 times a day. People will see a gun for $479, & ask if we'll sell it to them for $429. We'll agree, & they reply, "I'll let you know". What's to let you know? We met your offer, & you are walking away? It's a cost free victory. In their mind they got the gun at their price, but didn't pay for it. I could understand if we said we can't go lower than $449, but we met the price they requested. There's a word for them. LOSERS. GARY

I did read your reply, but I see no connection. If a guy asks if I will meet his offer, & I do, that means he will take the gun because I met his offer. If he was not going to take the gun, then why would he make an offer which I met? I could understand if we could not agree on a price, but we did. These losers have no money to buy a gun, but they have $10 to come to the show. They like to finger f?&k the guns, & pretend they are making deals, but they don't have the money when we accept their offer. If you don't have any money, then why are you making an offer that we accept? Like I said "LOSERS".

I think that's a risk you run setting up at a gunshow...............lots of options in the same room..............sellers talking to the same "buyer"; may be bidding against each other without knowing it.

Also how is the ''offer" is posed: Will you take $ XXX? of I'll give you $xxx for the Y! One is a question, fishing for your lowest price; and one is an offer.

I haven't been to a show in at least 10 years..... but in the old days I'd zip through the tables to see what I might be interested in ......might ID two or three "maybes; if I can get the right/good price"....

sometimes they were the same model maybe different barrel lengths or blue vs stainless.....or
maybe a 4'' 586 vs a 686 .....
maybe even a Beretta vs a 3rd Gen Smith

I might try to get each sellers "best price" or try to get a "price match" then decide which gun or guns I wanted more at the $$$ .

I would be accepting a risk that a gun might be gone when I came back.. LOL close as I come to gambling......

That said there are guys who come to just ...... what was your expression???? But most dealers can tell the difference between a "buyer" looking for a fair deal and a F----- Upper.

I simply asked what is his lowest price.I made no promise.Apparently you are mad at tire kickers and that is understandible, but you cannot change human nature.lets now keep on topic to my OP.

fixed or adjustable sights..........???????

I hate the adjustable sights and square trigger guards...... as much as I'd like a 639 ..... each feature would lower my offer..... $450 for a truck gun with sq trigger guard and adj sights.......OK to good

It is perfectly acceptable to walk to every vendor in the show, & ask for his best price on a S&W Shield. Write down the answer, & the name of that vendor. At the end of the show, go back to the vendor who had the lowest price, & buy it. But if someone asks me if I will sell him a Shield for $300, & I agree, that means that by me agreeing to his price, he's ready to buy the gun on the spot. Am I missing something here? GARY

My fault for derailing this conversation and no OP, I don't think you did anything wrong, your explanation painted a better picture than what I initially thought -- and I have watched & witnessed what N4KVE detailed and I find it nearly appalling. If you re-read the opening post, you can see why I asked.

We could probably have a long discussion about ethics and customs but that's not the subject of this discussion.

A 639 in decent shape with original stocks is, IMO, definitely a solid buy at $450. Now your dealer says "$400 is better" and IMO, if your obviously very savvy dealer (sarcasm intended) has a 639 for $400, take that one. But I'm gonna guess that he doesn't.

Tell you whar else...
Your dealer may not have a 639 but he may actually have an agenda.

That is a great gun at a great price. I had to wade through all the posts to get to the important information, fixed or adjustable sights, round or square trigger guard, wood grips. On these 639's the adjustable sights seem to be more commonly found, and the round guard is only seen on the early ones. Yours falls nicely into the mix and would be a great addition to any collection of S&W semi-autos. Good luck.

Pictures??
