Model 41 stovepipes
I have a used Model 41 and three magazines. The pistol stovepipes and jams about twice when going through any of the magazines. The open end of the discharged shell casing faces to the right, and rests on top of the round that is being attempted to be loaded. Any suggestions on what the problem might be and possible solutions? Recoil spring? Ejector? The ammo is Federal Target Grade Performance, which seems quite accurate. Thanks for any suggestions.

Fred have you tried different ammo? I would strongly suggest that you use CCI Standard Velocity ammo and see if that helps. Otherwise you may have a problem with the Extractor, Extractor Spring or the Recoil Spring. Start troubleshooting by trying CCI SV ammo.

Try putting a drop of oil on the top round in each magazine. If that doesn't do it, it may be time to experiment with different weight recoil springs. The model 41 can be a finicky pistol. There are some top pistolsmiths who can do a "reliability job" on S&W model 41's. The 1st thing I'd try is a Volquartsen Exact Edge extractor.
Next would be to buy 1 brand new magazine.
I had a Model 41 in the late 60s to early seventies that I wanted to shoot in 2700 matches but was always trouble with extraction and ejection.
I was given a jig for peening the magazine lips from a top gunsmith from the S&W factory.With the follower and spring removed it would fit snug inside the magazine and a brass hammer would be used to shape the lips of the magazine.This helped a lot but still had to many alibi relays.
I sold it off and used a High Standard Citation 107 without issues.

Kidcom has given you the same advice as I would have and do it in his suggested order as well. Also give it a really good cleaning by hand also before shooting it again. You will be amazed just how much dirt can hide under the grips even.

Often it is the third or fourth cartridge that's the culprit? If so, oil may have migrated into the magazine causing your problem.

My 41 will do the same thing if the slide rails get too dry. A couple drops of oil on the slide and it's good to go.
