Oil
I know this subject has been talked about, hashed and re-hashed many times but I want to bring it up again. Seeking recommendations about a proper oil to use on a pistol (4506) that resides primarily under my pillow and very seldom goes to the range as it's proven it's worth and reliability since I got it back in 1991. It's primarily my "house gun".
I have FP-10, CLP and Gun butter as oils to use. Which would be best for this purpose without evaporating or gumming up over time? Or, is there something better other than what I have?

grease
I have found that oil is not a good choice for stainless steel autos.
The slide rails, barrel lugs and contact areas of the frame need grease.
This will prevent galling and peening of the stainless.
The other parts do need oil and be sure to oil the hammer pin and extractor.
The only down side of grease is that it may not work well under a pillow unless holstered.
Bruce
BTW has anyone tried the Petrol Gel food grade sanitary grease? Looks as if it might be great for stainless and less messy than auto lube and moly.

TW25b grease Col. I have used it on my 4506-1s for over a decade. Works very well.
But any synthetic grease will do. Hope this helps! Regards 18DAI

Stainless rails, barrel lugs, etc
I typically use grease on my semi-Auto rails and lugs - especially so on the stainless parts. Brian Enos Slide Glide is the grease I've used with good success. There are sliding parts on some of my Performance Center pistols that prefer oil - barrel bushings and guide rods, for example. Those pistols have some tight clearances where grease just isn't the best choice.
That said, which oil and grease is a subject of much debate. Let your pistol tell you what it wants - try a number of of things yourself rather than latching onto the "flavor of the week". I've been tempted to go out and buy some of these miracle snake oils, but have simply stayed with what works for me...

I guess the only pistol I ever put grease on was a Glock and that was recommended. I used(IIRC) Gun Butter's grease at the time. Never thought of it on anything else. Thanks for the recommendations. Looks like another visit to the gun shop tomorrow and see what they have.

Lucas marine grease, same formula as their gun grease but much less expensive. My local Lowes sells it. 1 cartridge should last a long time, cost under $10.
Shop Lucas Oil Products 14-oz Marine Grease at Lowes.com

I have had guns, rifle and handguns , lubed with FP-10 go gummy during semi-long term (12 months) storage. I had to totally de gum them....Rem Oil has a mineral oil base and micro-Teflon particles in it and hasn't gone gummy, ever . The mineral oil will eventually dissipate but the micro layer of Teflon provide a dry lube and protect from rust pretty darn well.

Since I haven't been whaling for years whale oil is out, so the next best thing is Mobil one 5W-30 or 10W-30. $7.49 a quart.

In one of my shipments from Brownell's, they included a sample pouch of a new oil, SLIP 2000. I liked it so much that I ordered a bottle of their heavier version, SLIP 2000 EWL 30 the next time I placed an order, and man do I like this stuff. Heavy enough that it stays put, I just love it!
OK, that's my 2 cents worth. I love trying new oils, and this one is a keeper.

Try what I have used for many years. Go to the sewing section of Walmart and buy a bottle of Singer sewing machine oil. You'll never look at another.

I have used plain ol 3 in 1 oil on my guns for 50 years........What's the big deal?????????????
Our forefathers used bear grease or lard........In the early part of the last century Browning suggested using diesel fuel for cleaning and lubing........Bottom line there is a zillon things that can be used to lube a gun.........Don't over complicate it.........

Mobil One synthetic for me for years also. BTW, "oil what rotates-grease what slides"

I was always told to use grease on things that slide and oil on things that spin. That philosophy has served me well for many decades as my pistol frame rails can attest to.

Except on shotguns where it is the opposite - grease on hinge pins and knuckles and oil on things like extractors/ejectors.

I haven't looked at the MSDS/SDS for it, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if singer sewing machine oil was just like Hoppe's #9 oil and contains nothing more than white mineral oil. There's nothing wrong with that from my perspective and I would much rather have it smeared all over my pillow rather than some of the other toxic garbage people use on their guns, but you can buy the stuff in the pharmacy for a fraction of the price and it will actually be better since it will be USP grade. I don't think keeping a gun under your pillow is very wise, but routine inspections and maintenance would be prudent if you do and irregardless of what you use, so oil evaporating or gumming up shouldn't ever really be a concern.

Here's one I just acquired recently, as you can see, it needed to be cleaned a little:
No matter what you use, every so often its probably a good idea to clean it out and relube.

I enjoy reading about others choices concerning lubricants. Gives me an excuse for visiting the LGS or box stores when I hear of a new one. Right now just Breakfree CLP and Rem Oil for me but always may try another.

A few years ago while picking up some auto parts at the local NAPA. I spotted a can of grease for sale.
Mil spec grease from '66.. $2..
It mixes very well with other types of gun oils and keeps the oil/grease mixture very nicely in place. Works great for the rails of my autos and bolts on my semi auto rifles.
Not readily available but a little dab goes a long way. I'll never go through the pound in my remaining years.
Never know what you can find.

Les, I see you found my lost revolver! Been meaning to clean that guy up any day now.
It's been my observation that nearly anything with lubricating properties will work on handguns, one of my favorite lubes is automatic transmission fluid. Grease seems to work well on the slide. Ballistol, CLP and Hoppes #9 all clean just fine also. I bet Crisco or lard would also work in a pinch.

This may be just the thing. Many others seem to qualify as well.
M-PRO 7 SYNTHETIC GREASE | Brownells
Somewhere around here I have some of this but so far it's eluded me where I put it.

Last year I was at my local pizza joint owned by 2 brothers. We chat about guns, so when the store was empty, he pulls out a used Glock he had just purchased. While it was clean, it was dry as a bone. I said I could not let this stay this dry, but he had no gun lube at the shop. So I lubed it with olive oil. Now I wouldn't do that on a normal basis, but it worked. GARY.

I find the variety of answers fascinating, and I believe every single person who says that what they use is great.
What this all leads to, of course, is the REAL answer to the question -- USE ANY DA***D THNG YOU WANT! They ALL work!

BTW.........Back when I was teaching concealed carry here in SC.....People would come to qualify with guns that wouldn't run.......A few drops of oil from the dipstick in my truck usually fixed "em" up...............

UGH !! I'd go at that with disc brake cleaner even before I removed the parts. There might be something dangerous living in there

While it's true that any lube is better than no lube, they don't all work equally well, as you imply. Some gum-up after time. Some are too thick for cold weather or a particularly tight weapon. Some are too thin, and run off or sling off too easily. Some provide better long term corrosion resistence than others.
And, grease IS preferable to oil on stainless rails, as it stays in place far better, and therefore protects better against the galling that stainless is vulnerable to (as referenced way back in post #2 by Bruce Lee M.)

Good for wood, too.

All of you seem to have forgotten the OP's original request was for an "under the pillow" firearm. The obvious lubricant in this case is KY.

If one performs a little routine maintenance on one's guns, which oil shouldn't matter.

BTW has anyone tried the Petrol Gel food grade sanitary grease? Looks as if it might be great for stainless and less messy than auto lube and moly.

I have always used grease on frame rails on every gun.

ColColt, take a Qtip and rub a thin streak on the frame rail of any hq oil you already have and trust. With another Qtip rub a full length line of gold (cooper) anti seize on the rails of the slide. Wont run and stain your sheets.

There’s a reason why everyone has their favorite lubricants, and why they all say that their favorite works great. The reason is that everything- Gun oil, Mobil 1, canola oil, snot from your nose, earwax- works. Or, nothing at all. Yes, nothing at all.
There, I said it. If your gun is not defective, it will run just fine with no oil at all. Or Crisco, snot, WD-40. Steel rubbing against steel in a gun doesn’t need anything. The steel will not damage the steel. It’s not an internal combustion motor.
If the OP’s under-his-pillow gun is stainless, and is truly kept under a pillow, I’d clean it regularly, and just keep the tiniest bit of lube on the moving parts.

The absolute best is going to be DuPont Krytox; it will never gum up or change viscosity whether you're at the equator (hot) or the pole (cold).
If you want to read about stainless galling and lubes, read Why use only DuPont Teflon Bearing Grease? but prepared to be disappointed in your favorite grease.

I use CLP the last four years without issue. Lots of folks been using Hopes or Remoil for many moons without issue. Some folks use nothing but engine oil and atf and swear by it. As far as if it slides, grease it - Rock Island says not to grease their 1911, use oil. So, long story short, pick an oil, any oil and you’ll most likely be just fine. I’m sure your gun will outlast you and any kids you have.

I use Hoppes and Ballistol. I also have a bottle of Zoom Spout oil that works great. If you want 100% synthetic here is a good one recommended to me by a friend. I have not tried it yet though.

The 4506 I have "under the pillow" is of course, stainless. It gets a periodic cleaning but I think the grease for the rails and locking lugs are better than the oil I currently use. Somewhere around I have some Gun Butter grease but have yet to locate it. Time to just bop over to the gun shop and pick up some sort of grease as many have been recommended here...probably doesn't matter which brand.
