Default $1250 for a 1076 with a story

I posted this before while the sale was still live and got gigged for it, but now that the listing is deactivated it should hopefully be OK.

The gist of the listing is that a retired KY State Trooper wanted to sell his old duty gun and apparently somebody bought it for the story.

ARMSLIST - For Sale: Smith & Wesson Kentucky State Police 1076 10mm

How do you know it sold? The listing shows deactivated, but he might not have had any interest (well, other than Nigerian scam artists offering $100 over asking price ) and just pulled the ad.

As an aside, I hate WTS listings that warn, threaten, insult or otherwise speak down to potential buyers. We don't get that much on this forum, but it can be common on other forums. I don't care how much I might want a gun listed in such ads, but I have no interest in dealing with antagonistic sellers.

I don’t know that the story helped to sell the gun or if it even sold.......The gun itself, like nocents notes, is probably worth that much on the market.....yeah there are others that you might find for about a couple of hunderd less but the gun is not outrageously priced.....from the limited pictures it looked to be in great cosmetic shape for a service pistol. One would do their research to see if the Kentucky State Police mark is legitimate but one doesn’t necessarily buy for the story. And I don’t think the seller was trying to sell the story, it was just an anecdote as to why he would not negotiate on price. A lot of us post up “price firm” in our ads, does that make us antagonistic sellers?.....sheesh. I love 10mm guns and if that showed up in my market I would go take a look at it. I am not saying I would buy it at that price but it sure is pretty darn close to what the fair market value is.....and if buyers like TTSH like to self eliminate from being a buyer that is okay with me, it just means less competition when a gun comes up for sale that I want. And no matter what the seller says it is pretty hard for them to say no to the $100 bills in my pocket that I am prepared to offer that just may be slightly less than the asking price.....when I negotiate it is not always to get my rock bottom price but to just get something knocked off the seller price.......makes the joy of finding what you want just a little bit sweeter.......this is a hobby why so many fast and stiff rules, and opinions about others and how they go about selling a gun.

TTSH, I definitely hear what you are saying and I agree but it'd be my opinion that exactly the "style" and tone of that seller's spiel is the direct product of the Armslist market. I believe the seller writes his ad exactly that way because he's absolutely familiar with the complete JERKS that will be 90% of the responders to his ad. I am not excusing him; just saying I know why he writes what he writes.

The ONLY redeeming quality of Armslist is that it offers stuff we like. Otherwise, it's a dump, where sellers are tools and "potential buyers" are worse, by & large. No, certainly not all of them, but it's SO BAD that it isn't worth any of my time and I am a card-carrying gun nut that is constantly looking for a decent buying opportunity.

If it's on Armslist, I don't want it. If you want to buy from Armslist, I'd be happier to sell to someone else.

It shocks me that Armslist hasn't swallowed itself up.

Not at all. Did you get that from my post? I must need to compose my posts more clearly.

Default IN ONE EAR, OUT THE OTHER / WHO CARES.

What other peoples interests are isn't a concern, the gun is. Don't sweat the small stuff, & that is some real small stuff.

Being in KY and being a 10XX enthusiast I have seen a number of KSP guns and I have no reason to suspect this one isn't legitimate.

I missed that part of the listing. He was matter of fact.

as an aside, I hear MSNBC has positions available.

He sounds a bit brusque, but it's a free country. And lowball offers are a real problem; there are way too many people who seem to believe you don't mean it when you say "price not negotiable".

And there are plenty of sellers who enjoy that kind of entertainment, and even price their wares with bargaining in mind, and that's great.

I, on the other hand, usually offer guns at fixed prices because I find dickering annoying (nothing personal), so when I indicate that in my advertising and people don't respect it, I feel no obligation to sweeten someone's joy.

Seems like, "Price is firm, lower offers will not be considered", would have sufficed. Reading an offer to sell like that one leads me to believe I would be dealing with a seller "with an attitude," and I would most likely avoid the hassle - especially at that price.

It's a nice looking 1076 and of course there is always a 50-50 chance the seller is a decent fellow, in spite of himself.

This thread has gone in the direction of hating on Armslist.

Over the last few years I have bought probably 50 guns from Armslist ads.

My entire current collection has been paid for by reselling these purchased guns for a nice profit.

So for those that avoid Armslist keep doing so. I am glad to reap the rewards.

I guess I don't get how "lowball offers are a real problem". Sellers are free to list something with whatever rules, stories or restrictions they want and buyers are free to ignore any of those "rules" and respond to the ad in whatever fashion they decide is appropriate. If the seller doesn't like the responses or offers they can feel free to ignore them. If they don't get any responses conforming to their rules at their "firm" price, it's probably not the potential buyers who are the problem.

Maybe I’m old-fashioned and from a different generation, but not understanding that no means no is acceptable from a 4-year-old, not an adult. This discussion isn’t about what people are free to do, but what’s appropriate behavior. I’m just explaining why such a buyer won’t get a chance to buy anything from me.

I live in Northern Kentucky and I saw this ad too. Having just purchased a 1076 in nice condition off gunbroker (well, I haven't received it yet), I felt like this pistol was a bit overpriced. But not insanely so. And if the KSP heritage is worth something to you, I don't think it's a bad buy. I'm sure there were takers at that price, here in KY.

I have no problems with Armslist. Generally speaking, I find that people simply expect to pay less on Armslist, whereas they're often willing to pay a premium on GB. I've seen guns sit forever if they're not "priced to move." Buy hey... it is what it is. If you're looking to liquidate something fast, sometimes a little bit of a loss is acceptable. And after you deal with FFL hassles, fees and shipping... sometimes it's just worth it sell stuff for a little less on Armslist. And everyone I've dealt with on Armslist has been just fine.

Default CUTTING OFF YOUR NOSE TO SPITE YOUR FACE?

It's not like you have to become besties with the seller. You shouldn't have to endure their tude for long and you may never see or hear from them again. A gun you like/want at a price you are willing to pay goes a long way towards putting up with a "jerk". Everyone has their limits however.

I seem to have caused a whole lot of unintended angst for folks with my "aside" comment for which I profusely apologize. The WTS ad in question is only mildly abrasive toward the end IMHO... not at all like the really bad and insulting ones I was "mini-ranting" about. That's why I presented it as something of an afterthought to my initial comment.

So let's all please just calm down, okay? I promise I'll try to be more careful in the future. Deal?

Maybe you're just not comfortable with capitalism on the internet and that's fine but online ads are merely an opening gambit no matter what minutiae is included in the listing. If a buyer might be interested in the item but not the terms then they send an offer with their terms, if the seller doesn't like the offer they're completely free to ignore the offer and hope for someone to come along and pay full price someday. But again if the item doesn't sell it's not a buyer problem.

He didn't list quantity, but it comes with extra mags. Could explain the price, if he knows the true value of the mags.

personaly, i could not care less about a 10mm pistol, and the frame mounted decocker seems like a serious design handicap to me. nevertheless, seeing that plastic toy guns that cost 40 dollars to produce sell for 400 to 700, this 3d gem was at a very good price, magazines or not! as for the story behind it, selling a gun that saved my life, its not something i would ever do for the world, never mind for mere money. on top of that, replacing a 3rd that saved your life, with a glock, that in my book is borderline phD (permenant head Damage)

I found the ad a bit strange......... to paraphrase "don't try to bargain with me because this gun saved my life" ......... I see nothing wrong with making a counteroffer if I feel the price is too high and/or more than I want to pay...... I may make the best offer he gets and he may decide to accept it.

Frankly I would not be surprised if this seller didn't change his mind about selling at the last minute even if his price was met.

That is why I sell on classified ads on either Gunsamerica or GunBroker

I do not haggle but telling me he basically smoked a fella with this gun makes me want to run away from it. I just do not like to know I have a gun that killed someone. To each their own though some folks will probably buy just because it did end the life of someone.

I agree "to each their own", I believe attaching emotion to an inanimate object is silly... perhaps if it were a handgun that was involved in the death of someone you know or love -- at least then I could see a hint of rationality. Certainly could have emotion in this case for the guy who owns it, since (seemingly) it was used to save his own life.

Adding that detail to the sales pitch is, IMO, a cheap tactic. If he's emotionally attached to it because it saved his life... he should keep it. If he adds that detail to a 'for sale' ad, it sure seems like he's trying to "add value" to his sale. "Here, buy my blood gun."

But whatever. In the end, it's still a 1076 (cool) with a lousy price (not for me) and it's on Armslist (hard pass.)
