S&W 908S/Range review added
Found one at my lgs.i thought the 908 was a blued type finish but this one was stainless. Maybe that's the difference from a 908???
For $400.00 I put it on layaway.
Did I do okay?

I think you did fine.
Never seen a stainless 908, but if I did I'd sure buy it.

I've seen a stainless framed 908 but the slide was blued. I think you did fine. Any mags or a box? Pictures due upon arrival. Congratulations!

Will post pics on receipt. No box and only one mag. Happy though, been looking for one of these alloy single stacks forever!

I had an 908S that I recently sold. It was all stainless in color. The slide was stainless and the frame was a brushed aluminum finish. It was a nice pistol, but I decided it was time to part ways. I still have 10 or so magazines that I am hanging on to in the hope I find a 3913/3914. If not I'm sure I can sell without much trouble!

The S&W 908S is a good looking pistol. My cool weather CCW is a 908. Check out TT Gunleather Holsters if you are looking for a holster that will complement your pistol while your 908S works magic for the holster.

I've got a m908 that was a special from Zander Sports. The slide is a black material. I saw it was a special order, and I jumped on it. I like it, but my wife really likes it. She is small, so the single stack fits her hand. I was surprised, it's a nice shooting small smith. I can see how it'd be a nice carry gun.

Just in case someone else asks, TT Gunleather doesn't have the mold. Thx for trying, that's what I've been running into.

Yes, the "S" in the model name of 908S stands for a stainless steel slide (and a "light" anodized aluminum frame finish).
The 908S was offered for those customers who wanted something other than a carbon steel/black slide finish.
They did the same thing with the compact .45 model 457. They offered the 457, which came with a carbon steel slide (and black finish frame), and then they offered the 457S, with a stainless steel slide (and light finish frame).
The Chiefs Special line was just a little different, as each model had a letter identifier for the slide steel. For example a CS9C meant a carbon steel slide (and black finish on the frame), while a CS9S meant a stainless slide (and light frame finish). Ditto the CS45C or CS45S, etc.
The 908's were pretty durable compact aluminum-framed 9's. The didn't offer all of the "pretty" exterior machining of the 3913/14 models (nicely radiused corners, etc), and they made some changes to save some machining/manufacturing steps (such as the plastic sights and recoil guide rod, lack of a barrel lug, non-adjustable mag catch button, to think of a few), but the guns were reliable and durable "working" pistols.

Sorry, the TT Gunleather recommendation didn't work out. Your 908S has a bit more bling than my plain 908.
I have a DeSantis mini slide, SKU: 086BA83Z0. This holster is plain and works for a variety of my S&W pistols. DeSantis has other models that will work with the 908.
Check out Lobo Gun Leather for a holster with more bling. I know, when you check their list the 908 is not shown, but the model 908 replaced the model 3914 as part of the "value series". Therefore, a holster for an S&W Model 3914 will work for you.

I stuck a 3913 slide and barrel I found on GB for cheap onto my 908S frame. Works like a charm. Just sayin'.

I have the very similar 915. They are great guns with low demands. May it serve you well.

S&W 908S
Back up with a range review. This was my first experience with a 3rd Gen or ANY S&W semi. All I can say is wow! It is a natural pointer for me and although it bobbled (ftf) on my defense ammo,Sig Elite performance 124 gr jhp., it fed the 115 gr fmj fine. This Sig ammo has a wide mouth kind of jagged profile. Also shot without a strip and clean. My new cool weather edc

.....same experience my buddy had with the same ammo in his Shield....I noticed the same thing about the bullet profile.. ......I tested 15 rounds in my 3913NL with no issues and as that is no indication of functionality I would never trust that round as a ccw ammo

While it could be that this Sig V-Crown ammo is presenting feeding issues, I would recommend trying it again after cleaning and giving the 908 a fresh lube. A new $2 factory recoil spring is also highly recommended with a used gun ( Smith & Wesson Recoil Spring S&W 3953TSW 3913 3914 - MPN: 100950000).
I personally have yet to find an ammo type that will not feed & function in my 908 or other 39xx models, though I have not tried the Sig stuff. Any of the offerings by Federal HST in 9mm would be an excellent choice for the 908, as well as the Speer Gold Dots in 124 or 115 grain.

Speer Gold Dots in 124gr loading as well as Speer Lawman in the same weight have been 100% in my 908S...

I agree with TercGen regarding a proper cleaning and lubrication (not excessive), and replacing the recoil and magazine springs.
I've been using S&W 3rd gen 9's since '90, and have owned a 3913 since '98, and I've yet to find any modern major-maker factory ammunition which wouldn't feed & function in my 3rd gen's as long as they were lubed.

Have the 908 and the 908S and they're both very reliable and extremely accurate!! They still make the edc rotation!!

In SE Texas, $400 is a very good price. I'd be tempted to buy a 908S for anything less than five. They're wonderful carry guns.

I have an opportunity to purchase a used S&W 908S with 2 extra mags from my LGS for $495.00. The gun is immaculate and looks like it was a safe queen. Any thoughts?

I might try to do a little dickering, but wouldn't be surprised if the price is firm. Out the door $495? Dear me!
Yes, a 3913 is more desireble and I see one tonight on GunsAmerica for $495 with the box, but he's in NY and I'm not. There's a large, very well known gun store here in Houston that has a few carbon steel 908s and they start at 469 to around 550.
Figure that each magazine is going to be $35+ and I want at least two for every gun. If I can spare a mag and sell it, that lowers the price nicely.
Will the $495 put you on a Beanie-Wienie diet? Will a child go hungry? If it's just you, remember that another paycheck is probably right around the corner. Money is the means to an end, not an end in itself. I remember an old duffer who sold a barnful of antiques on an episode of American Pickers. As the duo were leaving, he realized that all he had left was an empty barn and money.
Do you want a primo carry 9mm that can save your life and will also be fun at the range? A gun that will last longer than many of us? That will, if cared for, not lose value?
I sometimes carry a 908 and absolutely love it. My opinion, buy it. I say that as a lady who is famously Scotch with a roll. (I'm so tight I squeak when I walk.)
Good luck with your decision. And if you're ever disappointed in buying the gun, you can always blame me. (If you buy and love it, I'll take the credit, too.)
