Default Smith & Wesson Model 41 5 inch model

Hi

Here are some pictures of a model 41 set that I picked up.

All three barrels have a different front sight.

I am sure the 4.5 inch barrel has been made up but it is interesting just the same.

Let me know your thoughts on these.

Thanks Graydog

My M41 came with a 5 1/2" Bull barrel back when I purchase it new in 1979 but I much enjoy shooting it with my 5" Sporter or Field Barrel which shaves about a half pound off the over all weight.

Interesting bbls. As you noted, the top one is an early (probably 7 3/8") modified bbl, probably reblued after modification. The second bbl is a later production (appears reblued). The third one is an early production (but can't tell which series without seeing the front end). and the mounted bbl is one of the later runs (could have white outline rear?). Can't read SN to date frame. You might want to measure the three 5" bbls to see the difference in actual length. Variance in various runs run from 4 7/8" to 5 1/8". As noted in several past posts, some may have been the result of "bad" 7 3/8" bbls, but the majority were made as 5" bbls. The first run does not have the underbarrel weight drilling. Although made for a relatively short period, there are more variations of the 5" barrel than any other configuration. The S&W 46 was also made in the 5" bbl and some used by the military.
