New to me 5943
Just purchased a 5943 from a local pawn shop I haven't been to in years. Only non black gun in the pistol case. Have read about the 3rd gen pistols but never handled one. Fit my short fingered hands like a glove. Very minor wear. Picked it up the next day. I hesitated and the salesman lowered the price. $340.00 out the door. Went to the range at lunch Friday, took about 20 rounds to realize I won't part with this one. Love the trigger, just need practice to learn the pull on it. What a great gun. I'm a new member on this forum and appreciate all the great advice. Two S and W pistols in less than 6 months. First was a 27-2 I bought from a neighbor last fall. I could use some advice on an OWB holster for the 5943.

Was issued one and carried for years. Loved it. DAO Smith and Wesson pistols were always underrated in my book. I always liked the smooth trigger pull. Enjoy it. Thumbsnap holsters have to be made for that specific model as the frame is a little longer. I like the El Paso Saddlery "Street Combat 88" which is open top. Good luck with your new gun.

Thank.you. I'll check them out. Looking forward to learning more about it. Keeping my eyes open for another 3rd gen pistol.

Congrats on the new gun, hopefully the first of many S&W 3rd Gens for you. You may also like the slimmer grips of the single-stack 3913/3914/908.
Any holster for a 5906 will work for your 5943, I personally prefer the offerings by DeSantis.

Thanks, looking forward to finding a comfortable holster for it. Have a good belt already. Looking at getting a Hogue rubber grip though the original is in great shape. Of course the night sights died years ago. Any suggestions on replacements.

Very nice indeed. One of my extra favorites in 3rd Gens. I own two... an everyday shooter grade and a pristine perfect keeper. Still trying to find one of its little brother Model 6946 pistols in top condition in box, but no luck so far.

Nice! I have a 6946 and I like the DAO trigger. It's not to everyone's liking, but to an old revolver guy, it feels pretty natural. The DAO 9's will fit holsters designed for the traditional S&W 9's with the exception of those with a thumb break strap over the hammer. The longer slide of the DAO prevents most of those from closing. One exception that I have is a Gould & Goodrich pancake holster, it closed just fine over my 6946.

Agreed!!!
I had a 4583TSW and was hesitant about the DAO at first. Boy was I dead wrong, I loved it. Once I got the hang of the trigger it was a NAIL DRIVER.
Good deal on your gun!
As for OTW holster, I say Blackhawk serpa. Secure, fast, and solid.

Great. Night sights are obviously dead. P.O. punctured them and filled the void with glow paint. I've used Glomania phosphorescent powder and mixed it with clear enamel on another pistol. Works great, glows all night. Will probably do that one this one but want to replace the sights with 3 dot Novaks. How tight are these sights installed?

To drift OT a bit, can you provide some details on the Glomania?

Those look like Meprolight sights - if so, they can't be relamped.

That's good news. On the Glomania. I bought the kit from eBay. $17.00. It comes with a small container of pigment, I ordered green since it is the brightest. Don't need much. A small vial of lacquer. It dries too fast so I got a small bottle of clear enamel. Experimented with it. Found out that if I drill the dots in the sight deeper, repaint them with white paint, then put the pigment/enamel mixture in it works great. Mixed and applied with a toothpick. Kit comes with a keychain UV light to charge it with. I use my streamlight and shine on the sights for about 30 seconds. Lasts all night. Still bright enough to see well at 5:30 in the morning. If it gets dim after a few months can reapply easily. Tried other premixed glow paints without success. I'll take some night/morning photos and post if they come out.

Thanks. I see on their website that they are working on a gun sight product. I plan to email them and ask about it.

The S&W 3rd Gen DAO pistols are great guns and underrated. A 5943 is a good find. Brownells and Numrich are good places for parts. I’d suggest Ritchie Leather for a nice OWB holster.

Can someone identify the rear sight from the photo. The line at the bottom of the sight appears to be tritium and still glows. Can't seem to find one like it searching on line. I have painted the dots with glomania paint for now. Thanks.

Looks like the S&W .377" Night Sight, another member previously posted they can be found at Brownells . If you switch to the lower .260" Novak rear may have to switch the front also.

Thank you so much. Really like the bar at the bottom. Bought some plain 3 dot novaks but haven't put them on yet. Would like to replace what i have. Stay tuned! Lol.
